After doing a few of these and having ALOT of response from social media, I thought I'd make a video and walk through the process for some of you who may be wanting to do this that are DIY. Of course, I cant go into HOW to paint one, because teaching the basics of painting is a whole different animal. Hope you enjoy
Products used in this video:
SATA 5000 HVLP 1.4 spraygun
Dynabrade 3" mini sander
Tropical Glitz Platinum Plus flakes
SEM Products Candy Concentrates
I DO NOT ASSUME ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR VOIDED WARRANTIES OR ANY ISSUES THAT MAY ARISE FROM YOU TAKING YOUR MIXER APART TO PAINT. ALL LIABILITY IS ON YOU.
ALSO, WHEN SPRAYING ANYTHING, A WELL VENTALATED AREA IS A MUST. A BOOTH IS RECOMMENDED.

This is beautiful! I have a few questions. I have an airless sprayer by Graco. Did you need to thin the epoxy before spraying, and if so, with what solvent? And what solvent to you recommend cleaning the sprayer with afterwards? And I know you're using auto paint for this with metal flake, but are there other paint types you'd recommend for this application as well? If not, how would you go about prepping paint for a sprayer and cleaning the sprayer afterwards? Sorry for all the questions, I have an older KitchenAid that I want to refinish for my sister-in-law and don't want to screw it up. 😂

Thanks for the guide. I just took mine apart. Will be hand sanding it with 400 grit. You mentioned the sealer after sanding, just wondering whether it is the same as spray painting, sanding with 600 then spray again? I am also thinking about using paint remover vs hand sanding, which is better?
@inthehomeshop

There's no sense in using a paint remover. The surface will still need to be abraded prior to paint. If you don't want to use a sealer and just paint, prep it with 600 and you're good.

Love this! Most videos I've seen don't go through the disassembly process and simply use masking tape to cover off parts that don't need to be painted. What do you think about that and why did you choose to disassemble?
@inthehomeshop
@inthehomeshop 4 жыл бұрын
These bigger ones HAVE to be disassembled. The "lift" mechanism specific to the Pro models slide up and down, there's no way to paint behind on the neck due to it being covered. I understand why some just tape them up and on the tilt head models, its easier. Ive done it both ways on the tilt heads, full tape up, and full disassembly. there are some pieces that are just easier to tape up than remove. However, not taking the effort to see how one comes apart and just taping it instead is just laziness. I disassemble as much as I can and tape up what can be left without effecting the final result. Pro models like in this video, no exception, they come apart too easily, and I will ONLY paint these disassembled.

Seems like the paint isn’t sticking. I used a clear coat as well but didn’t seem to prevent these scratches

Sounds like you got the paint too thick on the moving parts. If it's a tilt head model, one coat of color and clear is all you need at the pilot point elsewhere you will run the risk of it doing as described. The bowl lift models are much easier for this reason

Just watched it, not sure whats hard to follow. I explain what I spray during each step.... this is almost verbatim what I said: Epoxy, metal flake. The flake is a custom mix of 2 size flakes from Tropical Glitz. I bury it in clear, then sand down with 600. The candy color is a custom mix I made as well using candy concentrates from SEM Products. Then clear again.
@aubrey756
@aubrey756 3 жыл бұрын
Is the epoxy a clear shiny spray paint of some kind? Is metal flake a type of paint or a color? Or is it like glitter mixed with epoxy paint? Is there a top coat on top of it or do you just sand it? What is a candy process? Any resources to learn how to paint like this or use the equipment?
@inthehomeshop
@inthehomeshop 3 жыл бұрын
@@aubrey756 epoxy is a primer. It sticks to almost anything and most things stick to it. Metal flake is exactly tat.....flakes. the top coat on top is the clear. Yes, the clear has to be sanded flat prior to next step. Flakes, as you see in the video, produce a hell of a texture that has to be buried in clear and smoothed over. Thus is why it takes a few coats of clear and sanded flat with 600. The candy process.....not sure whats confusing there. Sand, mix, spray. You did a beautiful job and you used professional level products instead of rattle cans, YAY! Constructive criticism: your video is more about disassembling and reassembling a mixer than it is about painting it. More specific content on choosing paints, what type of spray system, solvents, processes etc. are what I was hoping to see when I landed here. You are skilled and have a great style for DIY instruction and I think you could be super successful on youtube, but sadly, this video misses the mark for actually instructing someone who wants to CORRECTLY paint their own mixer. Most DIYers can fumble through disassembling and reassembling a mixer...we need help on the PAINTING process (which was totally "glossed over" pardon the pun), as the comments below indicate.
