so i got really curious after you said that the mv had something to do with the sewol ferry accident and this is from an article that i found on allkpop that simply explains the theory : “The theory was posted by blogger freyr25, who saw the MV and thought it was very much referring to the Sewol tragedy. The theory went viral, getting not only a bunch of views and comments, but also getting posted over Korea's portal sites. The first 'proof' were the paper boats featured in the teaser. The paper boats were one of the symbols of the mourning after the Sewol incident. Yeri is the only one blurred out on the album cover. Yeri, who is 18 this year, is the same age as most of the victims of the Sewol ferry incident at the time of the accident. At the beginning of the MV, the girls get all dolled up in preparation for their trip. Behind Yeri, especially, is a yellow butterfly that symbolizes hope. (Yellow is also the color for the Sewol ferry ribbon.) However, all the girls have dark expressions even when getting their makeup done, supposedly foreboding the tragedy that's to come. The set looks like the inside of a boat more than a hotel/motel, especially because of the lights used. The sign that can be seen in the background seems to read 'AIS on 15-16'. The AIS, or the Automatic Identification System, is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels. The Sewol AIS was suspected to be turned off between the 15th and 16th. Seulgi looks into the keyhole, learning the truth. Her looking at the camera supposedly symbolizes that she realizes the truth, and later she tries to leave, but is blocked by water all around her, symbolizing all the students that could have been saved. Irene, who sits still, symbolizes the students who listened as they were told to just stay still. Joy, who is the sole survivor as we'll see later, watches her sadly as Irene just sits still from outside the window. Irene, who has her eyes covered, doesn't know the truth (which is why she was just sitting still.) Joy on the other hand, climbs the ladder and leaves, succeeding in escaping. She's wearing yellow - the symbol of hope and the color of the Sewol ferry ribbon. Seulgi, who knows the truth, opens the window for Wendy, but it's too late as Wendy's already soaked. Seulgi cries when she sees this. Yeri is sound asleep on a boat that's starting to fill with water. When they're all together, the screen is light. However, the screen changes to just Joy, the sole survivor, alone in the dark. The lyrics that play at this moment is 'Let's meet again'. Seulgi, who could have escaped because she knew the truth, fails as the halls of the 'boat' fill up with water. She opens the door to heaven, where the other members (except Joy) are waiting for her dressed in white. Wendy escapes the dripping water by going under a table. The students in the Sewol ferry, as a last resort to try to stay safe, crawled under tables. This scene under the aurora is said to be a fantasy where all 5 members can be together. Candles are used not only to symbolize hope but also to pay respects. Yeri finally wakes, but is already soaked and her boat sinks under bloody water. Water pours into the boat through the window, shocking Irene. She falls into a room filled with water (blue, with furniture floating). A thing to note here is that the black underneath is tilted, implying that Irene's floor is actually tilted like the Sewol ferry was. Joy, the sole survivor, wears black to pay respects. There's an emergency bell, and the door up front has no door handle on the inside - signifying it can't be opened from the inside. The last remaining light symbolizes the last hope for the students still trapped inside. The background of the teaser is the black sea. Also, the theory supposes that the moon behind the cloud signifies the lunar calendar... which would connect to the lunar date of the Sewol ferry sinking - March 17th. This would match up with why SM suddenly delayed Red Velvet's comeback a day, even if they cited other problems.”

I'll never forget the Sewol Ferry incident. I'm not from Korea, but when I read about it in the newspaper in my town, I cried so much. So many young lives were lost and the South Korean government didn't do enough to take care of those who were trapped. There's so many videos/pictures/messages about what happened inside; and a documentary about some of the shady things that happened. I can only imagine the fear of those who were trapped as they realized that help wasn't coming. This incident hurt South Korea the most, but the whole world felt their pain, as well.

I think the keyhole is representive about how the victim cant get out from the room. So they're just stuck in that room and dont know wht actually happend. So sorry for that accident . Wish all the victim in a good place 🙏

It’s actually interesting how many people relate this song the Sewol Ferry tragedy. It really does have a lot of water imagery to it. And there’s no wrong interpretation of the song and video. But the song and video originally is about Chilseok, which happens on the 7th day of the 7th month (of the Korean calendar) which is why that’s the Korean title. It’s a love story between two people who meet and fall in love but the girl’s father forbids it and separates them, only allowing them to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month. It’s a story about the transition between the warm weather into monsoon season. It rains because of the sadness the lovers feel when they have to separate again after that day. That’s why there’s so much water imagery. Definitely do some research about the festival, it’s quite lovely. The song and video are whatever you make of it though. The song is about meeting again after a long time and you can definitely relate that situation to the tragedy.

I was kinda shocked when i saw the album cover, the picture of 5 of them, yeri was the only member that got her face blurred, her age was 18(korean age) back then, the same age as the students who were on that ferry. Well i dont know if its intended or not because it was taken by a film camera. There is a possiblity that the photographer made a mistake.

There was an actual footage on youtube from the student (victim) on their room with the other classmates. That was during the boat sinking when that student who records the video saying all his last words to their parents, friends etc and it was heartbreaking 💔💔💔.

OK so first thing you see in the video is a blurred yellow butterfly in the background so for the sewol fairy accident a yellow butterfly was the symbol like a yellow ribbon too and we also see Joy wearing a yellow dress because Joy represents the survivors joy is the only one that survived between the five girls we also see the key hole it represents how the students were looking at each other through the keyhole seeing each other drown,When Joy was blurred out in the tea that was representing how the students realized the tea was tilting and that’s when they realized that ship was sinking, we see suelgi in a red thing that is drowning in water the red thing represents the ship because the ship was red and the last part that was drowning was red so we see her, as you said, yeri represents the victims because in the album cover she was blurred out because she was the age of the victims and she was in a boat where she was drowning,we see joy being blurred out from the picture where the four girls are behind her that’s because she was the only survivor and the lyrics meant one day we will meet again or something like that, we see irene standing in front of a circle window, that represents the students who followed the ordered and stayed still and died, and there are many more details but that's all i can remember

Hello, (my english is bad sorry) I had to present this song and the MV. So I worked hard on it. I'll give few ideas about what I think because it's complex and it will be too much The music and music video is all about Romanticism (or call it Neoromanticim with trap beat), and tragedy. (all audio markers are based on the MV video, not your) violins introduction : incipit of the charaters, of the staging, yeri looking herself in the mirror = report to herself, 'who she is' (philosophically) ; grace of the memory. basically same for Irene, being pretty (that's important). 0:19 : Wendy's entry : she announce the drama at the end ! that's typically a tragedy (like a greek one) 0:25 : Seulgi discover the truth but she can't escape from her destiny. = tragedy, Theatrum Mundi theory. 0:43 : in the mirror, Irene can't look herself in front: she is lying to herself her reflect looks at us, she has no power. She want to escape but the teachers told her to keep calm. 0:49 : Joy is looking at us (sitting with Irene), she saw the students who don't escape. She has no power on them, she can't save them. Later, 0:54 , she remember when she get on the chip, looking at us with lucidity, thinking she don't have to get on. 1:05 s: Seulgi, playing another character who wasn't aboard, grieve for the deads. She open the windows, entering a communication with Wendy the omniscient narrator, saying her last will, or the tragedy to her. Or, Seulgi trying to help wendy from the drowning, but Wendy died before she got the time to open the windows. 1:27 : sadness of Wendy, thinking about her death. 1:31 : the ship is moving away, Yeri represents the faith, the innocence of the people and mostly the students. 1:37 : metaphysical of the tragedy, there's no cup on the table but you can see the plates. Joy will tell us their history, their drama. 1:54 : Seulgi is dead in water. Thinking about herself and her death, waiting for her judgement ( definition of Hell in Sartre's Huit-Clos. "Hell are the Other people". 2:05 : she enter into the paradise, certainly a lost paradise. Reference to Automatic's Yeri scene with the library ( at 1:27 , the book on the right, Grolier Classics : Paradise Lost from John Milton. ) 2:29 : the omniscient narrator Wendy close the door of the paradise lost. She's telling us the next of the tragedy. Echo with Seulgi, paying homage to the tragedy. 2:41 : Wendy narrator go under the table, with the spirits of the deads, celebrating the 1 year of the tragedy, replaying the drama. 2:54 : Irene looking at the puddle, metaphor of Narcissus. Irene realize who she is. 2:58 : Yeri wake up, and realize there's something wrong on the boat. 3:02 : Irene decide to love herself and her beauty. = remember beginning of the MV (incipit). You can see a flower on her left hear, I think it's a sign of the rebirth. 3:06 : It's raining on the boat, the boat takes water. It toggles. Yeri is sad. 3:08 : Wendy and the other cries about their fate. 3:20 : The boat is full of water, Yeri is dead. 3:25 : Seulgi tell us the drama. pay tribute again. 3:31 : Irene see the water breaking the window of the boat. She's scared. 3:32 : Yeri and other girls are acting like a choir like in a old greek tragedy, taking the point of view of the spectators. They can't do something, they have no power, rememoring the past ; the fate come true. 3:37 : the window break, Irene fall. 3:31 : Seulgi knew the truth, but she didn't avert Irene because she don't have the power to modify the fate. 3:42 : Joy is dead, looking at us with incapacity. 3:44 : Wendy the omniscient narrator is crying telling us the story. 3:50 : girls are now a part of the universe, they are stars shining. They represent one tragedy of the world, our cosmos. They are now considered as heroes, they joined the gods. Irene, nostalgic of her past, turn her head to look at us. They are now far away from us. 3:54 : Irene wake up from her life. She is now dead, her body is condemned into the boat. 3:59 : Seulgi who knews the truth, walks towards the light. She took a different road. By passing, the lights turned off. She condemned herself. She don't want other to follow her errors.
