I think the ax colors work great. It gives it more of a "fantasy" look to it imo. Can't wait to try that.

Ever since the late nineties I am a follower of the painting clinic. You really motivate me in keeping painting minis. The steps are really well explained and the end results are amazing but not so that it is discouraging as we mortals will never be able to paint that good. Thanks a lot for all your time and effort and I am really looking forward to your videos in 2018! A cheer for the Netherlands and all the best wishes for the new year for you and all other channel followers😀

would never thought about freehanding that! Your theme colors and style work that island narrative so well.

I'm running as a human warrior in my current game, last session I got turned into a dragon bear by a bunch of curses exploding. Thanks for another great video, they really help me with painting. :D

Another great video and thanks again for all of the great work! I had to laugh at the end when you mentioned playing a were-bear. I painted this mini a few months ago and he acts as the "beast form" for our D&D 4e Goliath Druid. I thought it suited that situation almost perfectly (although I did consider modding the axe into a staff. I held off because I am not so sure making such a change to a Bones mini would really work).

The steel looks fine. Next time maybe try a few black glazes to the shadows and see if you like it.

Cherry blossoms are more pink with some white and peach blossoms are slightly yellowish orange and white.

The cottman series brushes by w&n are really decent, i see you use them often.

I have found that washing Bones then soaking them with rubbing alcohol / letting them air dry before using the Brush on Vallejo primer is the absolute best method for preparing them. The primer will chip easier with a harsh thumbnail without the alcohol bath in my experience. Maybe I am just overly concerned about the painting sticking. But I have been very happy with the results.

Some very interesting ideas going on here; if I remember correctly, cherry blossoms start off a dark rose color and eventually lighten to a pink-white, so the colors work. You could also have gone with a sort of Viking/Celtic/Teutonic theme and that would have worked considering those cultures have certain myths and legends about bears. The only thing I don't like (and its the sculpt, not the paint job) is the weird necklace/fetish thing; it just doesn't work for me. If you try the non-metallic metal scheme again, you could try going for something like Luftwaffe Grey; its still got that blue in it, but its more grayish so it might cut down on the final, really blue look.

I like the idea of using the cherry blossom pattern on his bear skirt. It makes him feel more like a person/npc than a monster. I don't claim to be an expert here, but i think you're running into trouble on the nmm because you're not pushing the contrast hard enough. It looks like you're highlighting as if the object is a regular matte/satin finished object that you'd see out in the world (which is why it looks a bit like rock). Looking at the metal that's in my general vicinity, I see things like the collars of my brushes and the cap of my exacto knife and the light plays with those differently than the other nearby objects, the highlights are harsher and the midtones aren't as prevalent between the shadows and the highlights, as much as they're next to the highlights, which are abutting the shadows. Though, while I do agree it isn't perfect, I think that ax looks perfectly reasonable in the context of that particular bear dude.
@warsmithmia7 жыл бұрын
XnFM you're spot on about nmm. I'm no expert either but I have a few attempts behind me, and when it works, it is always because I pushed the contrast. When you don't, you end up with... sadness. When I learned It, I picked up both from Darren Latham and Mathieu Fontaine, and both those artists say to push the contrast to where you almost go from black to white. Pure white should always be the final highlight (spots) for nmm according to them.
@ThePaintingClinic7 жыл бұрын
The last time I painted NMM, and it was a loooonng time ago, there was two ways; NMM and sky-earth NMM. Sky -earth had the hyper reflects and regular NMM was more akin to just paint metal like anything else, just with metal-looking paint. The results were more matte back then and I think I just went with what I remembered. I'm not even sure the old style NMM is even a term anymore.
@Xn70007 жыл бұрын
I had forgotten that style had existed. I spent about 15 years out of the hobby but now that you mention it, circa y2k, there was sky-earth and the "other style." Even in the Golden Daemon spreads back then you didn't see too much NMM back then, it was still exotic.

But would acrylic paint have orange peel when applied to surfaces that aren't primed or sanded
@TheRunesmythe7 жыл бұрын
Depending on how its applied, its possible. Most typically, you see "orange peeling" with rattlecan paints, either because the distance between the miniature and the can is too great or environmental conditions like temperature and humidity are affecting the paint; in both cases, the result is some of the paint is drying before it gets deposited on the miniature, so you're getting small bits of dried paint mixed in with the primer/paint. So if you were using a rattlecan to spray a basecoat you could still get orange peeling because of the aforementioned reasons.
