Painting asphalt roads. The Boomer way.

😎Well, Boomer Diorama has given us a ton of new stuff to try. And I love trying new techniques and materials. I always shot Vallejo Model Air through the airbrush. Look what happens when you think outside the box! Use lots of water, and light coats. And wet sand - What?! Nice subtle random shades and tones. So cool!

Great vid, dear Bill. Really like Boomer’s methods. For your next attempt, it may be fruitful to splash the paint drops with some extra drops of water, to increase the amount of capillary action along the road surface. This before you touch it with the brush. Still, love your result. The road surface looks much more interesting than the previous rattle can stage. Looking forward to your experiments with the Golden Coarse Paste. Since I started watching Boomer I have become a great fan of Golden products. Cheerio

Hi Vincent, thanks for the tip. The road was my first attempt with wet-on-wet. Since then I painted my warehouse roof that way, and I think it came out better. I have a couple more roofs to do, that will be fun. Thanks again - Bill.

Nice work.Roads are tricky.I learned a lot from Boomer dioramas definitely the most talented model railroader I’ve ever seen. The Bob Ross of Ho scale. I’ve followed him back when Glover Road was a shelf layout. I try and take bits and pieces from all you guys I follow and apply them to my layout and it’s been fun learning different techniques.

I use poster board from Wal Martin, finely textured dark grY Rustoleum spray paint and oil based Sharpie type pens. Cut the poster board to fit, spray with paint (it comes out in different shades as sprayed. Wait a day for paint to dry, then paint lines with oil based fine point pen.

Good video. Having been a road contractor all my life I would say there are aspects that are missing. Asphalt is prone to meandering cracks and potholes. Not sure how that could be achieved but it is worth thinking about. Also the flexible nature of asphalt always creates waves in it when it is driven on by heavy trucks and especially if it has an insufficient stone base which regrettably is often. I use Vallejo paints as well but Boomer uses Tamiya which are alcohol based allowing him to spray quick coats. I would have been interested in how quickly the Vallejo paints would have dried using the airbrush with very watered down paint. Perhaps it would be a bit slower drying than alcohol but I don't think unreasonable. Asphalt even with the sun's oxidation effect would have had a much darker appearance as well. I would have started with black and then weathered the surface with very watered down grays until the color was achieved.

I think what would really set it off are darkening the two lanes with tire tracks, if you look at a real road you’ll know what I mean, especially from the air

I really like the random shades and tones, vs a monotone color. Lance Mindheim really stresses that in his books. Much more realistic. Have fun! Bill😃
