J e n Thank you, Jen! I paint with acrylics a lot and I love them. The colors are bright and on paper they look just like gouache. By the way, when I want a completely gouache-like look on my acrylics done on paper I cover the painting with a very thin layer of acrylic matte varnish. The painting becomes beautifully matte. Also because acrylics don’t have that chalky finish of gouache they often look brighter in a finished peace. The only advantage of gouache is that you can soften the edges at any stage of painting while with acrylics you have to be more organized and soften them before the paint has dried. It is just a matter of habit 😉

bughu Thank you! No, I don’t. As I am used to work in oils I like blending colors on the canvas. So with acrylics I have to work fast in order to be able to soften some edges before the paint dries.

Have you thought about trying this in gouache where you can blend on the ground unlimited open time?

Pat Kin I paint with gouache on smaller sizes. On anything larger that 8x10 I use acrylics instead. I am ok with their drying time as I work fast anyway. Also a cool thing about acrylics they don’t have that color shift between wet and dry paint that gouache has.

I’m three years late but do you use any mediums or something to slow the drying? ’Cause I find it so hard to ’blend’ with acrylics and some people say that using medium makes it easier. So I want to know does medium make it actually easier and is it worth it to buy? Amazing work btw:)

Yes, I do use Golden retarder medium with my ordinary Golden acrylics. It slows down the drying time of the paints significantly. Also, I use Golden Open acrylics which dry even slower but they shouldn’t be applied in thick layers.

When you're adding all these colors, are you painting over wet paint or do you wait for it to dry?

Since I painted this with acrylics, my colors dried quickly and I could easily apply new colors on top of the already dried colors.
