This is one of the loveliest painting tutorials I've come across on KZbin. Thank you for putting your time into this. As an aspiring artist, I very much appreciate it! You make a great instructor.
@devernepersonal36362 жыл бұрын
This is the purest KZbin video i have seen in some time. He is not monetizing the video. He doesn't have a sponsor. he isn't telling us he has THE best way to do anything. He isn't specifing the brands a billion times at nauseum like they are the only way. He says what his preferences are, and he is really here just to tell us how to make great hair. This video is rare considering the direction most youtubers art or otherwise have gone.

This is a most interesting tutorial to date on the subject of painting hair. Thomas is clearly a lovely, humourous guy, who makes painting hair seem easy. He is a rare breed of artist who is willing to share his skill and demonstrate his technique for anyone to follow and practice. Many thanks for this great tutorial Thomas.

Actually, it is easy. Do you remember how hard it was to learn to ride a bicycle? Yet after you did, it seemed easy. All it took was practice. Whether it's bicycling, bricklaying, welding, or painting hair (or anything else) all it takes is practice. Paint, paint, paint! And after a while you too will think it's easy. And as for paint quality, heck, cheap paint looks as good as expensive paint in most cases. The painting just may not last as long. Best wishes and thanks for the comment!

Love your paintings and your willingness to show exactly how you do the work. The skin, hair and teeth in your paintings are amazing. I've just started painting (using acrylics) and have decided I will only paint a portrait if the person wears a hat and does not show any teeth in their smile. I think you can actually see the love in your paintings.Thank you.

It never ceases to amaze me how cruel people can be. How can anyone dislike this video. This kind soul has taken the time to share his talent and experience to further the ability of others. I guess the old idiom if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all has been lost in our society.
@tinfoil77711 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question, Asha. Yes, all paintings should get a final overall coat of picture varnish, made especially for the purpose, and available from art stores and art supply catalogs. In addition to protecting the paint, the varnish makes the colors look deep and rich, as though they were still wet. Many oil paints dry to a dull finish, and the varnish restores the luster. You should make sure the finished painting is completely dry before putting the varnish on it, though.

@SleepyMushroomFairy Hi and thanks for the question. For blonde hair, do the same as I show for the light brown hair, except use yellow ochre for your main color, lightened with a brighter yellow if needed. Streak (blend) in pure white for highest highlights. For the dark areas (shadows), use a dark earth color (umber) as I did but also streak in some violet to balance the yellow, since violet is the opposite of yellow. Experiment! You'll pick it up with practice!

Your humour made me laugh out loud! Especially the absolute last part. And for the record I'm an introvert. Thank you so much for these videos. I really appreciate how you don't peddle specific brands or makes, even to the extent that you don't even disclose what medium you use. I'm learning to paint with acrylics, but from my knowledge, the basics of painting hair differs very slightly between oils and acrylics. Thank you for this video, and please keep them coming!
@tinfoil77711 жыл бұрын
Hello Clark. Thanks for your comments. The main difference I see between oils and acrylics is the fast drying time of acrylics, which can be an advantage under the right circumstances, but is usually too fast for my style. Being old and decrepit, I paint slowly, and need time to mess around and experiment with things on the canvas, so I go with slow-drying oils.

Glad you liked the video. I'm painting on linen canvas, but cotton is OK with me, as is gessoed wood (many of the great masters of the past painted on wood instead of canvas. Wood panels are great). My preferred brand of paint is Utrecht, but there are many other good brands of oil paint on the market. It's not so much the materials you use as how you use them.
@tinfoil77713 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliments. Since you do not have a live teacher available, I encourage you to watch every painting tutorial on KZbin that shows a style of painting that you admire, for each will have something to teach you. And read art books. But mainly, paint as much as you can, for you will learn from your mistakes, each painting you create will usually be better than the previous one, and never get discouraged. Keep trying. Many of the best painters in the world were self-taught.
