Very detailed information. Just what I've been looking for. There is a lack of good information on KZbin regarding pastel brand comparison with good quality vision! And the papers are a bonus. Particularly wanted to see Giraults in action and what The colours look like in 'real life' . Thanks again :-)

Pastelmat isnt actually a "sanded" paper. Its made by taking long cellulose fibers, and fixing them to the surface with a special adheasive that has powderd cork in it.

Great video. You didn't mention pastel pencils though? I like pastels, but they are quite expensive plus the good papers like PastelMat are quite expensive, plus you need to frame them with double mat and under glass, with adds to the final cost too.
@walcottfineart50884 жыл бұрын
Good point! Pastel pencils really fall into the genre of drawing and this was more about pastel painting, with the big sticks. But yes you can use the pastel pencils as well. Caran D'Ache and Cretacolor are good brands. I have a small set for details and signing the piece. It is true that pastel as a medium requires framing under glass, but the industry standard now is not to use a mat. They're just framed with glass and frame only with spacers to keep it from touching the glass. Pastels can be safely stored unframed by putting sheets of glassine paper between them which will prevent smearing. Thanks for watching! :)

Great video for a beginner like me. Bought MI Teines, Strathmore multi-media(can get wet), and hardware store 400 sandpaper. I like the MI Tienes least. Sandpaper with ultra soft pastels requires a very light touch. Next I'll try liquid and Uart. I'm glad that you mentioned the lack of archival-quality on the regular sandpaper, but I might use it for studies.

Thanks! LOL Rembrandt pastels are a very good brand...I am friends with a very successful pastel artist who uses them in her work. Mungyo actually makes a line of handmade pastels that are better than their cheaper lines. They are pretty nice if you want to try them.

I am really interested in getting into pastel painting this summer and am looking at a few introductory sets. I have narrowed it down to three brands, which seem to be good and which I can obtain for good value. So, if you had to choose between Schmincke, Sennelier and Unison, which would you recommend? Or is it a case of splitting hairs, as it often is with these things? :) Thanks.
@walcottfineart50886 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If you are only going to get one set, I would get the Unison. They are best all around in texture for doing a painting start to finish. Schmincke are wonderful but very verysoft. Sennelier are nice but have a habit of crumbling unless you get the half sticks.

As for the beginner which one should I go for semi hard soft pastel or softer ones ?
@walcottfineart50885 жыл бұрын
I would probably go with the slightly softer ones. Lots of people atart with the Rembrandt and they are a great brand, but I would also highly recommend the Mount Vision, in fact they would actually be a great one to start with. :) Thanks for watching!

@walcottfineart50886 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The Mi Teintes Touch is pretty nice...I haven't used it as much as some of the others though. I don't think it will get quite as many layers as the U-Art or PastelMat (my favorites) but it will hold way more than the standard plain Mi Teintes does.

Thanks for posting, great demo on the various brands. I have more than the complete sets of both Rembrandt and Sennelier. They both cut back on their color lines a while back. I have about 300 colors in Rembrandt, and over 700 in Sennelier, but alas, when I run out of the one's they no longer make, that's it! So, very helpful to see the handmade lines. I also have several brands of pastel pencils. I would recommend the Faber-Castell or Caran d'Ache as well, though the Caran d'Ache are a bit pricey, they have the largest amount of colors and are very light-fast.
@walcottfineart50887 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment! That seems so strange that those two brands would cut bakc on their colors...most pastel companies add to them. I didn't cover the pastel pencils here but I do sometimes use them for details. :)
@kabluey59717 жыл бұрын
Rembrandt and Sennelier both cut out the more toxic colors like the cobalt, cadmium and chromium colors which is actually a good thing. Sennelier use to have a lot more portrait colors, but they did add a lot more land and sea scape colors. Sennelier still has sets of 525 but they just changed the color palette eliminating some of the portrait colors and replaced them with brighter, more rainbow-like colors, and also added iridescent colors.
@walcottfineart50887 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. Of course, I should have realized that's why they did it! :)
@MarieHalle6 жыл бұрын
Hello great review, but did you know that ALL of the Rembrandt line are lightfast and non toxic as opposed to the softer and more expensive pastels which feature some colors not lightfast and also some that use cadmium and cobalt in certain color? I think this is why Rembrandt are best for home use, especially considering family members and pets in the home.
@walcottfineart50886 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! That's great information to have for people who are concerned about toxicity. Rembrandt pastels are very high quality.

Very good video on pastel materials but why did you miss pan pastel ?is among the latest trend and most popular for recent times works great even better than terry ludwig or diane townstend or unison. Also i wonder you missed another beautiful pastel medium" pastel pencil" like carbothello ,pitt or derwent or giaconda,cont'e all are wonderful indeed used by professionals over the years...it's only my suggestion that's ll..any way it's very informative video.Double thumbs up for your effort!!!!!

Thanks for watching and for the comment! I don't have much experience with PanPastels, but yes they are another option people can try! They function very differently from the traditional pastel sticks. There is no way to cover everything in one video, so I try to cover the basics. Pastel pencils are good too! If anyone wants to try them I recommend the Cretacolors.

As i understand from their video The reason that ‘SCHMINCKE’ has the softest pastel its because their products has NO binder at all just pure pigments..unfortunately in my country they cost SO MUCH (double than SENNELIER ) ..
@walcottfineart50884 жыл бұрын
You would have to have some binder otherwise the pigment would just fall apart like a dry powder, it would stay in a stick form. The Schmincke website does mention they use as little as possible though. Thanks for watching! :)
