My 1990's Bretonnian army were all done in blue + white heraldry, so this guide is getting saved for later to help me recreate it for The Old World 😀

I had a unit of knights back in WFB days that were all red and yellow but were each unique. I halved and quartered their heraldry in different patterns and even halved some quarters. The result was a group of unique knights that actually looked like a unit.

I might need to do that "highlight metallics AFTER the matte varnish" trick more often. I've done it a few times in the past, but not always. The unvarnished highlight always retains the shine better.

Very beautiful, the heraldry is simple but striking, also if generally I use for metallic parts Cote d'Arms ' Metal Wash , as, at least for me, give a more "blackish" tone to armour & weapons . You could try Vallejio's Satin varnish, given with a brush it helps to shine more the metallic parts. P.s. with these alternate heads is really possible make different knights with the same body, it's really a great option.

Great model and I really like the bright colours. I noticed you didn't paint the glue part on the shield, but you did on the arm. Glue on paint, will that hold? I always mask my models on spots to be glued, but not sure now if that is needed.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio10 ай бұрын
I've never really had it be an issue. I guess the paint's stuck to the miniature anyway, so short of pulling it off it ought not to be a problem. At least I've never had bits fall off, anyway!

Looks amazing, as expected from you. A couple of questions: that white looks grayish, at least on my screen (so much so I was sure you were going to say "don't use actual white, use light gray instead because it looks better"). Is that so, or do my eyes deceive me? Another question: is varnish really needed for plastic/resin minis? (I know it's needed for metal minis, 'cause the metal is harsher on the paint when handling it by hand... but has anyone ever seen paint peeling off from plastic minis? I haven't. Is this one of those things we hobbyists do out of ritual?).
@SonicSledgehammerStudio10 ай бұрын
Which white? Only the very final highlight is a 'true' white - Corax White is a faint blue-grey off-white, and Pallid Wych Flesh has a very vague peachy tone to it, which I really like for 'cloth' white. As for varnish, it's less about protecting the miniature and more about the finish it gives. I varnish pretty much everything, regardless of material. A good matt varnish will often make cloth look more natural and smooth, where a satin varnish suits things like Space Marines or stuff with a gleaming, clean aesthetic.
@theandf10 ай бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio ah, yes, I meant Corax White. You say you're applying "white" but it looked light gray to me (and I also heard the advice elsewhere that pure white must not be used as a base coat). As for varnish, your use makes sense!

Saved for a watch later! Stoked! Did you do any scaling for the Gallia figures or did you keep it at it 32mm?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio11 ай бұрын
Nope, this dude's just straight from the STLs and on to the build plate. They're not really that much larger than the original knights, though the bigger base size for The Old World helps with the real estate!

Are you using AP Fanatic paints straight out-of-the-pot, or diluted a little - if so, with water or medium?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio10 ай бұрын
Mostly straight from the pot on a wet palette, with a tiiiiny, tiny bit of water left behind in my brush from rinsing a previous colour. Not even a full droplet, just 'damp brush' and get going.

Yeah I have been fighting with painting white "fast" for a while now. I guess it might be the colour that need the highest amount of work
@SonicSledgehammerStudio11 ай бұрын
It depends a little on where you're starting from - a predominantly white miniature with a few splashes of bright colour can be super easy from a white primer, but with something a bit more involved like this, yeeeah, it slows down the work just a tad. 😅

Hi there, Amazing knight! Do you think the 3d prints from my mini factory will come out well at 20mm if I was to re scale them? I run a mars 3 pro so the printer will be more than capable.

Would love to see more genuine GW models, I certainly enjoy those vids more. But thanks for this, I’ll give it a good watch later.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio11 ай бұрын
I can't afford non-stop GW miniatures; it's either a few extra videos featuring similar-but-unofficial miniatures a month, or I can manage one or two videos each month, where I'm demonstrating the same techniques anyway. It's very, very rare that free miniatures end up on my painting desk, and certainly never from GW.
@johnoneill365411 ай бұрын
Tbf it's so similar you can just use the same scheme for GW miniatures. Don't see the need to have the exact official mini myself but to each their own.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio that’s totally fair. I have so many GW models that I’ll never paint. I wish I could send them to you! 🙂
