One problem with this guide,, Gliddens endurance masonry paints your using do not require new or sound render to be stabilised. Just thin the first coat to prime. Key to good decorating is always read the product info & data sheets! Just a tip from a decorator of 20 years! Note: Do not seal sound new or bare surfaces with stabilising primer. Do not apply Glidden Endurance Smooth Masonry Paint during wet or frosty weather.

Hi, when you next need to paint the wall do you apply straight over the old paint (having removed flakes etc) or do you need to strip it? Thanks
@ultimatehandyman8 жыл бұрын
You can paint straight over as long as the existing paint is sound and you have removed any loose/flaking material.

Great, that's the answer I wanted! Many thanks for your help.

hi I just thought I would ask. can you recommend a good white gloss paint. that can be used to paint door frames and bannisters in a very busy place where there likely to be knocked about a bit.? thankyou
@ultimatehandyman9 жыл бұрын
+John Jones The Zinsser All coat seems durable and dries extremely quickly for a water based product. The gloss finish is not as shiny as you would expect to get from an oil based gloss though.kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5fLhZl7bd6jjLc

did you render with lime plasters as rendering a wall can cause serious damp problems as you well know cheers!!
@ultimatehandyman7 жыл бұрын
The mix had integral water proofer mixed in with it and some lime to help with thermal movement. Thanks for the comment

i have recently had sand and cement render skimmed over blockwork, do you advice to seal it or just go straight to painting - thanks

garythe bong You should just be able to give it a mist coat then a top coat on top. The paint will tell you how to dilute it for the mist coat ;-)

Hi, how long should you wait to dry before painting top new rendered? I have fromt gable end top front rendered of porch!
@ultimatehandyman3 жыл бұрын
You need to wait until it is completely dry, which can be several days. I can't give an exact time frame, as there are too many variables, such as depth of render, temperature etc.
@jackwardley36262 жыл бұрын
best to wait about 6 weeks for render 2 weeks for plaster

Hy, helpful video as ever. I'm planning on painting my current pebble dash in my house iv jus bought, over the next couple months. Have you any tips an advice regarding this? I assume I won't need to put a stabilizer solution on first? Jus make sure its all clean and debris free, or is there a product I can buy to help protect the surface. Ideally a spray may e as painting p-dash is a nightmare already . Thanks
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
I'd take a look at Zinsser Permawhite, it is a self priming paint that contains a mould inhibitor. You can use it on brick or stone, so it should be suitable for pebble dash. I have sprayed it onto two garage doors using a Wagner sprayer and the results were fantastic.

how long do you leave render before painting pls.
@ultimatehandyman9 жыл бұрын
+Sylvia Smithson If it's new render you should leave it as long as possible to dry out fully, preferably a few weeks or more.

not sealer then?, or could i seal to be on the safe side
@ultimatehandyman9 жыл бұрын
garythe bong It depends which paint you are using. If you have a look on the tin it will tell you how to apply it. There is no definitive answer I'm afraid as it depends on the paint. I asked in the decorating centre if I needed to seal the render first and they said I did, but then a few decorators said I didn't need to and could have just applied a mist coat first!

Guy in the Dulux shop told me never stir masonry paint with anything metal. It reacts with the paint apparently
