Well done for trying again Matt, you will get better every time as you have found. Been painting for nearly 40 years, and I am still learning. Quick tip.....If you get any water, crap, or a run etc, while the paint is still soaking wet, hold a small length of masking tape at both ends and use the sticky bit in the middle to get the crap out then blast a bit more paint gently onto it. Sometimes works perfect. but always makes it easier to rub down and redo after it dries.

Was watching an American guy working on a truck and episode 1 of Mongrel was a recommendation. I’ve spent past couple days binging to get up to date with it all. The progress has been an incredible watching experience, I look forward to seeing the eventual finished outcome. 🙂

Looks like a good effort, proof that life is a learning curve. Little tip if you intend doing more painting is to make a temporary booth with cheap polythene and roofing battens, saves getting the overspray that is in the air all over everything else in the workshop. Keep plugging away, you'll get there in the end, can't wait to see it finished.

Good going, Matt. As others have stated, it's certainly a solid paint job, well beyond what is needed for the interior for a race car. Make sure to take the needle, nozzle and aircap off and clean them and and of the gun's internal fluid passages completely, using lacquer thinner. Then reassemble and properly lubricate the wear points. Again, good job!

Not sure if this was same day vid or not, but something I suggest before you leave is put the mongrel up high on your hoist while it hardens. Quit a bit of temp difference and quite a bit less dirt to settle. I do this at my shop, makes a difference. That passes the 50/50 test and probably even the 10/10 test!

First let me clearly state I'm not a professional car painter! Sounds like you had some good counsel- I got raw hyded in a plant that made pipe, and I was one of the "coaters". The mantra there was "If you wouldn't eat off of it don't put clean paint in it". I had never imagined an industry that made some much dust would be so allergic to the stuff! Even through the camera, the difference in all aspects was obvious.
@rickwilkins30554 жыл бұрын
My way of reducing most of my paint runs is to take my finger off the trigger, just for a split second at the end of each sweep before going back in the opposite direction. Also every time I fill up the pot on a longer job I give the nozzle a wipe with some thinners and that stops that build up.Keep up the good work. Well done that man.

Second down knob on the back of the gun is so you can set where max pull on the trigger ends up as. It’s a much better way to be consistent at paint flow out of the tip. Yes, do keep an eye on paint build up on the air cap too as you know, it causes issues. Might add a small length of hose to the gun and the water trap between it and the shop hose so your not wheedling a long handled gun by adding the filter directly to the gun. I just learned to use it as directly connected though. Nice job at gun management while spraying too. More practice will show up as quality improvements vs wasted effort. Looks way better now so bravo Matt. Trev did great at suggesting the gun you used. Good choice.

If you get a drop of paint or a run you can spray just air out of the gun and push the run around and sometimes it will level out a bit. It won't come perfect but often it will make it good enough or easier to sand out.
@Mk2Dave4 жыл бұрын
Top work as aways bud! well done for getting stuck in your self with the painting! a caged interiors always a bit tricky. Id make sure you tape up your interior before you start doing the exterior/filler work etc! Its i nightmare cleaning it all up afterwards! especially if your mixing it with wet rubbing, its hard to get the water marks away from any dry patches in the paint! Once your finished all the filler work, I recommend using U-Pol Surface, 2 or 3 coats of that then all blocked down before putting your filler primer on! Its like a light liquid filler which you can block down with 120 grit! gives you a really even smooth surface! Cheers mate👌

The more you spray paint the more you'll get to understand how to get the finish you want and the best thing is there's always plenty of people to get advice from (not always the right advice lol) great video as always look forward to seeing you do the outside of the car if you have any old door bonnet or boot lids practice on them first Rob

@BarnacleBilltheSailor4 жыл бұрын
One finer point to paint mixing. Try to mix only the paint and hardener first, then once mixed you can add in your reducer instead of mixing all 3 at once. This stops globs of paint forming in your paint pot. Also, you don't have to strip and clean the nozzle every time you run a pot of paint through. Get a clean cloth with some reducer on it and simply wipe it off before it builds up too much. The more you use the gun, the better you'll get with it, like taking long strokes instead of short ones, releasing the trigger at the end of every pass instead of holding it down, overlapping your spray pattern and fogging in. That will help reduce runs. Don't keep the paint flowing without moving the gun, etc...You'll get it!

well done for somebody who isn't a painter to dive in and tackle it yourself,small tip for you,put the airline over the shoulder of the hand you are using the gun in and with your free hand take hold of the airline and keep the slack from allowing the hose to dangle below the gun,so airline is diagonal across your back,i don't know how many times a slack hose in a confined area has ruined a job by dragging across new painted surfaces.

good job matt, but pressure a tad high use that small adjuster at the bottom of gun by the connector to adjust airflow
@Mercmad4 жыл бұрын
you can buy little guages to fit on the gun .I use mine all the time because even with a huge compressor like mine the pressure can rise and fall if others are also plugged in . The instructions should have the air pressure on the paint can too.

Thankfully, nowadays the spray gun isn't that expensive anymore. Painter can finally use it like it's meant: like a brush. One can stroke a brush heavily or light, but when covering different surfaces, you'll still need a different brush - paint gun. One for outside convex curves, one for inside concave curves, and one for radical curves, like tubes. All of these surfaces need different type of air pressure, different type of spray pattern, and different type of paint, so three or five guns isn't overkill, in this case. As you noticed, the gun needs to be thoroughly cleaned after each cartridge, so outside needs two or three guns, just to spread the color and base mass. Then comes the clear cote guns. They need to be separate guns totally to reduce contamination, so you are up to eight. Two more, and you're good to go, creating the "professional finish". All guns need their own water separators, and pressure gauges + adjustment. But, with a little practice you can still do basically the same finish with five brushes and four rollers. Seems like everything is deliberately made to look harder than they actually are.

I'm surprised no one mentioned you getting a water strainer to put on your air line from the compressor... Compressors always have a small amount of water coming out of the pressure side, so if you are painting, you need to strain the water out of the lines before your paint gun... If you don't, you get big splotches in the finish...
