Hi. Make sure you're not watering down the underglazes too much, because they tend to burn out at higher temperatures in the kiln. I think that's what happened with the red underglaze I painted on the flower mugs. Underglazes are meant for low fire, but can be used at all temps, but they do tend to change colors if they're not thick enough. I try not to water them down as much. Greens tens burn brown, and so do reds. It's all about testing, and trial and error. Also, make sure not to use a clear glaze that has zinc in it. Zinc can also alter the underglaze colors. I fire to cone 5, and that seems to work fairly well.

Lisa, I am watching this one again but have a question. For some reason I was thinking you first put 2 or 3 coats of white underglaze on the piece first, and also inside. But It looks like you are painting the color underglaze directly onto the bisque. And no white underglaze inside, just the blue “water” bottom painting and both inside and outside finished off with 2 coats of clear. I am working on a piece today which I take to get fired tomorrow so I am wondering whether to put base coats of white or just jump right in with the color. I’m using the underglaze in overlapping watercolor type layers. ALSO… I was going to ask what kind of kiln(s) you use, and if they are digital or the older kind, and was it hard learning to use a kiln? Thank you : ).
@WildAcornsArtStudio2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, I am applying the underglaze directly to the white clay. (B-Mix 5 w/grog) I only apply a white slip first if I'm applying it to dark clay. (I dip the leather hard greenware piece in white stoneware slip.) Good luck! I have an older Skutt kiln with a digital controller. They are fairly easy to use. The hardest part is getting it hooked up to your electrical panel. They take a lot of power, and can cause fires if not hooked up properly. I would suggest starting out with a smaller kiln that doesn't need a special electrical hook-up, and with a digital controller. My kiln is so large that it takes a lot to fill it, which slows down the firing process, which is why it's hard for me to show my pieces fired at the same time I am filming making them. So I wish I had a smaller one. They aren't very expensive to run. Maybe $15 to $20 per firing.
@ckunitysd85922 жыл бұрын
@@WildAcornsArtStudio Thank you so much for your help with my underglaze question. : ) Re. kilns... I've only been working in ceramics for about 1.5 years now, thru a local adult ed class (for which I am very grateful!!). But I did acquire a Cress kiln from a friend a while back. According to the serial number it is about 50 yrs old, so I have been afraid to even try it once! The plug looked very unusual so my retired electrician friend came and put a different plug on there that will fit my electric dryer plug, but ... now I don't trust that plug and have never turned it on and am about to get rid of it. I have fantasies about getting an L&L but am not rushing into that purchase. Thank you for sharing with me your thoughts about a smaller kiln. I noticed they make those "doll kilns" too... for doll makers. I haven't really considered those but now that you said that about having a smaller one, it might be something to check out.
@WildAcornsArtStudio2 жыл бұрын
@@ckunitysd8592 I would be very hesitant to use the Cress kiln if the plug was changed to fit the socket. Not all electricians are aware of the type of draw a kiln is on the electric panel. I've heard of wires melting at the socket. Is the electrical sure the outlet will handle the heat from the kiln? If so, you could do a test run, with you or someone checking on the wires every 30 minutes to make the socket and the wires are not getting overheated. Cress makes a good kiln, and I wouldn't worry about the age, if it's in good shape. Are the elements all tucked into place, or are they slumped to the side, like dominos collapsing? Do they have a whitish corrosion on them? Those are signs of old elements. Make sure you set witness cones on each shelf when firing a kiln, so you know what temperature/cone it's reaching. What cone is the clay that you plan on firing? I'm not sure doll kilns get to cone 5 or higher. Be sure to check on that. Make sure your kiln is not within 18" of anything that will melt or catch fire! :-)

Hello. Yes. I want to get the watercolor effect on my pieces, using multiple colors. So the colors I want to be dominant, I try to make sure I have at least two layers. It's hard when you're mixing and layering the colors on the piece. Unfortunately, some do burn out, since I fire to cone 5/6. I also try to add as little water as possible. Adding water will also cause them to burn out at the higher temperature. Underglazes aren't like regular glazes, though. You don't have to add three layers. Underglazes are just made of clay and pigment. That's why you have to apply a zinc-free clear over them to make them glossy if you want. Thanks for watching. :-)

Thanks for this Lisa. It was exactly what I was looking for! What kind of brushes are you using to apply the underglazes?
@WildAcornsArtStudio3 жыл бұрын
I use whatever acrylic paint brushes that I find on sale at Hobby Lobby. I don't remember what brand, they're so old the name has worn off. :-) I don't like the horse hair ones, though, because the hair falls out, and they're not quite stiff enough to apply the paint how I like it. Mine are all black or white bristle.

Hello Lisa, I love love love your work, a question: doesn't your underglaze under your pieces stick to your kiln shelves?
@WildAcornsArtStudio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Josi. Thank you so much!!! 💓 Good question! :-) I have never had it stick to the kiln shelf, when using Amaco Velvet Underglazes. I had a couple of pieces stick a little when I used Speedball Underglazes. :-( Never add a clear glaze to the bottom, of course. :-)
@tinepeeters18542 жыл бұрын
Love the video! Can you do this on leather hard clay? How high do you fire them before and after? I guess the clear glaze isn't used all over to avoid sticking to the plate once in the kiln? Love you loads, so sorry about all these questions ❤️
@WildAcornsArtStudio2 жыл бұрын
Hello! No worries, I don't mind answering questions! 😀 Yes, you can definitely apply the underglaze to greenware, whether it's dry or leather hard. After the bisque fire, then you can apply a zinc-free clear glaze. Underglaze can be applied to the bottom surface, but regular glaze cannot, unless you plan on stilting the piece. I bisque fire to cone 04 and glaze fire to cone 5. Good luck! 😀

@@WildAcornsArtStudio Sorry, just checked the transparant glaze I have. Can I fire the clear glaze higher, when using underglazes? Cause my clear glaze says cone 08
@WildAcornsArtStudio2 жыл бұрын
@@tinepeeters1854 So it sounds like you are using low-fire clay? (Cone 08 is fired much lower than cone 5.) Just make sure that the clear glaze is designed to fire at the same temperature as the clay you're using. Underglazes have a wide range of firing temps, so they'll be fine. Google "Ceramic Cone Firing Chart." It will help you understand the range and temperatures of the cones you're firing to. It's easier to look at a chart than have me explain it. 😀 It's kind of weird how the numbers relate to temperatures. 😀

Thank you so much! The Amaco Velvet underglazes do not stick to the kiln shelf. I just use whatever brushes are on sale at Hobby Lobby. :-) Most of them are Master's Touch. The fan brushes are Mayco #8. My favorite!!

sorry, my finger touched .😩🤭 same colors you use but as PIGMENT plus bentonite and gum arabic😟 the black is: powder form jet black german brand Bolts underglaze which you just mix with water. Thats all. I could use some transperant glaze ( without zinc as you mentioned that it does not fit) but I could not decide.. Very kindnof you to give help. Just know that it is appreciated a lot by me who is just a hoby potter since many years.🌹🌹🙏❤️😘

I loved your video! How do you keep the bottoms of the cups from sticking in the kiln since you clear glaze them too?
@WildAcornsArtStudio3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Actually, I do not apply any clear glaze to the bottom of the mugs, unless they are indented enough for the clear glaze not to touch the shelf. The underglazes rarely ever stuck to the shelf. I only had a couple of problems with Speedball underglazes sticking. I only buy Amaco Velvets now. Thanks for watching!!

I have a question, after putting underglaze do you fire it then you put clear glaze and fire again?
@WildAcornsArtStudio3 жыл бұрын
Hello. After the underglaze dries completely, I gently apply a generous coat of zinc-free clear with a soft thick fan brush. Mayco #8. After the first coat dries, I apply one more, and then I glaze fire. I don't fire the piece again before adding the clear.

why do you prefer Amoco velvets instead of other underglazes by mayco or Duncan?
@WildAcornsArtStudio3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I have not tried Duncan, because I was under the impression that they were better suited for low fire. I have used Mayco Stroke and Coat's, and they are really nice, but they are glossy, and I don't always want the glossy look. They also will stick to the kiln shelf, and I like to glaze the bottoms of my pieces. I have also has Speedball underglazes stick to the kiln shelf, which is not good. From what I understand, they have a little Flux in them which causes this. I feel like Amaco also has more pigment, and not as watery as some. 🤔 This is just my opinion, though. It really depends what type of surface you are trying to achieve.

New to using underglaze on bisque. Can one paint on bisque ware, then fire, then paint again before glazing clear or do you have to glaze before firing?
