I tried this technique today and the design went on the dish just like it showed. My problem was when I put on the underglaze and tried to wipe it off. The clay wiped out some of the design and smeared it. I see now that I needed to add and remove the underglaze in stages. I covered the whole design before wiping it off. This technique is a game changer….I can’t draw. Thank you
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the underglaze can get tricking sometimes. Depending on your design. Did you try Underglazing when the clay is drier? You can also try Underglazing after you bisque fire. I have done it both ways. So glad this is helpful. 😍

Hi Colleen. Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting pottery. That is a good question. Good question. You can apply the underglaze before or after you fire the piece. I do it both ways sometimes I will apply underglaze on greenware or after it is bisqued. If you apply it before you bisque make sure it does not touch any other greenware in the kiln because the underglaze will transfer onto anything else it touches. 😊

Thank you! Very good question. I have underglazed on bone dry clay many times throughout the years. There is only a risk of the pot cracking if you do NOT handle it very carefully. I have a question about adding underglaze on leather hard pieces.... I think I may of made the mistake and added the clear coat over the underglaze on leather hard piece. Will that ruin with only one firing? It is not a functional piece, it is for decorating... So did I completely ruin the pieces by doing this??? Your video was excellent tutorial and I learned that applying the clear glaze after the bisque firing is the proper way to do this.. Please let me know what I should expect... Thank you! :)
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Very good question Lory. Your piece should be fine with a single fire. It is very important to fire your piece at a slow heating rate. This will allow the gases to escape. This post will help answer the question more in-depth. Here is the link potterycrafters.com/do-you-glaze-pottery-before-or-after-firing/ then go to - Can you fire pottery once?

Thank you for another great video with good information! Don't think you mentioned how many coats of underglaze you used - normally I thought 2-3 coats were necessary, but life would be easier if 1 coat would do for something like this! Your mug looked great at the end - so if that is one coat per color, I'd be happy! Did you just use the one or show us the first coat and then sneak and do the other coats?
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan. Ha, Ha, you're cute 😀 Yes at the time I was using Amaco clear glaze, and it was thick. So I only applied 1 coat. If I use too much it gets milky looking, and I was getting crazing. Can this be done with clay that has fully dried and been bisqued?
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Good question. You can apply the underglaze when it's bone dry or even bisqued. But you have to do the trace, transfer, and carving when it's leather hard. 😊

Hello I'm a beginner in ceramics and would like to try this technique. I saw the list of items recommended but didn't see the type of pencil used. Is there a specific number or graph pencil to use or any type is good? Thanks Barbara from Wrightwood

Welcome to the art of pottery crafting. Good question. No the pencil type does not matter because it will burn off in the kiln. 😊

Great idea. Is that normal tracing paper? I'm having problems leaving the image on the pot, even with the softest pencil.
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. 😊 Yes, it is. Try leaving the tracing paper in the water longer, use a soft rib to press the pattern in the leather hard clay, and leave the tracing paper on the clay a little longer. Hopefully, this will help your pattern show on the clay for you.

Hi! Where can I find transfer paper and the tool that used to carve this butterfly? You also mention cone 4 can this be fired at cone 6? That is what we have in our class --- cone 6. Please be so kind and respond to this message!! Thank you!!

You're welcome Jean 😊 you can get the Tracing Paper here geni.us/anAce (amazon) and the Dot Tool here geni.us/dnJlQg (amazon) yes your underglaze should fire to cone 6 with no problem, just double-check the firing temperature on your underglaze bottle. Happy glazing 😍

Hello I have a guestion or 2 wondering just starting out in pottery and after you underglaze your bisque fired piece can you glaze over it or do you have to fire it first then glaze and fire again

I was wondering if this technique only works with the speedball under glaze? I use amaco velvet under glaze. Also how many coats do you apply, and would this also work for bisque fire at cone 6 and high fire at cone 10?
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Great question Mary Yes you can use any under glaze 😊 Did you mean cone 06 for bisque? I bisque fire to cone 04 after I carve. You can apply the underglaze before or after you bisque fire. I know you can push it with underglazes at cone 10 but low to mid fire are best. I do 1 maybe 2 coats and my underglazes turn out great. I also use Amaco underglazes.

Hi Marie, thanks for this demo. I do have a question. I had a mug bisque fired. I added the art with coyote underglaze and dipped it in clear glaze. Then had it fired again. When I got it back, in all the areas I painted the underglaze is rough. The rest of the areas the clear glaze is smooth. Do you know what would have happened and can I dip it or brush a clear glaze over the whole piece and refire. ? It was coyote clear glaze that I dipped it in. Does it have to be coyote clear glaze or can I use any clear glaze like Amaco? Brush on. Thanks for any advice.
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tammy. Glad to see you are still doing pottery. Hope all is well.😊 That has happened to me before. It is most likely the underglaze. If you used 2 colors and they both turned out that way, You can try applying the clear glaze over it again, and refire it may work. If not the underglaze is bad and that does happen from time to time. Mine was a small bottle of red. I did a test firing with it and a blue underglaze the blue turned out perfect and the red was rough. Let me know if you have any more questions.

@@PotteryCrafters wow! I didn’t think it could go bad. I haven’t had it really long. I’m gonna buy some stroke and coat maybe I’ll have better luck. It happened on 2 pieces and I did mix colors for green and 1 was red. Thanks for your help. Have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you, Tammy. The underglaze doesn't go bad. It's just that sometimes there is a bad batch. It's only happened to me once so far with the speedball red. My friend got Stroke and coat and really likes it. I think I will be trying it also. Let me know how it goes. 😊

Hi Marie/pottery crafter, may I know if underglaze temperature must be similar with the cone of the clay? Or will it be okay to have a different temperature for bisque firing? I have limited access to underglazes but I can't seem to find underglaze that are for the same temperature/cone of my clay.
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question. No. I have bisque fired my underglazes to cone 04 then fired my underglazes all the way up to cone 6 using a high fire clay with no problems. The only time it can get tricky is if you fire to cone 10. I have done that also and the underglaze color came out darker than what I would have liked. You can check out the underglazes on my glaze page potterycrafters.com/recommended-tools-best-glazes/ They have all been fired to cone 6 with no problems. 😍 Hope this helps.

That is a great question. Even though you can no longer crave in the clay, you can still trace and transfer on the bisqueware. 😊
