In this video, I’m STILL WORKING on waterfall paintings inspired by Silver Falls State Park in Oregon. We went in early spring, on a day when snow was still melting from the upper parts of the park. This painting was done almost entirely in Derwent Inktense pencils. I’m loving the sketchy quality I can achieve by using them and their vibrant colors just blow me away!
Today, I introduce to you a new (to me) book: Mitchell Albala’s “Landscape Painting - Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice.” I evaluate my finished piece with an eye towards lessons learned by reading Albala’s book. Come along with me to see the magic of the woods and the delight of creating with watercolors and Inktense pencils.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this very beginner phase of my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new. (348 subscribers at the moment I shared this video)
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something (anything!) from amazon, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you - and that helps to support this channel.
In this video I used:
Mitchell Albala’s book: amzn.to/3Ap7Af9
Arches cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/41cwLNC
Stabilo pencil, black: amzn.to/40cZjG8
Derwent Inktense pencils, set of 12: amzn.to/3oj1dXV
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
-----
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

Silver Falls State Park was so fun to hike this winter with the snow surprise and water falls that were so full. Good to see how your painting turned out.

I’ve recently found your videos. I watch literally hundreds of these art tutorials being new to watercolour and desperate to learn😊. Can I tell you how much I like your delivery please? The way you look into the camera makes me feel you are really talking directly to me. Your almost stream of conscious chatting is just lovely. I feel i understand so much more of the theories when you explain them, it’s as if I’m listening to a friend. I just watched the one where with the giants foot into the ocean and your appraisal of what was good and what’s needed reworking was revelatory to me, both in what I learnt from you but also from seeing how you were learning too. And you made me laugh out loud when you turned the camera off cos you thought you were getting boring. Brilliant❤

Hi Sue, Awwww, thank you so much for your kind and encouraging remarks! :-) It’s so welcome since I’m still at the very beginning phases of learning how to make videos, feel okay being in front of the camera, figuring out how to edit…. :-) I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed my videos and learned something at the same time!

My eye enters the painting where you were saying but then goes up to the trees at the top of the hill. I'm drawn to the pinks there. From there my eye circles clockwise to the bright green and peach of the hillside and on to the blues of the pond in the notch of the puzzle piece. From there right back to the original entry point. I see the mostly white of the waterfall, pond and river as a border. I have to consciously look at the rest of the painting. It is interesting how differently people can see the same thing. I am very drawn to color.

Hi Gayla! Thank you for your comment! I love hearing how your eye moves through the painting, especially because it’s different from how mine moves… it’s the thing, I think, that keeps art challenging and interesting… that is, the many ways of “seeing.”

I have Inktense pencils and Inktense blocks. I love them with watercolor. It sure does bump up the color intensity.

All the new art tools are so exciting. I can’t think of a single art supply that I regret buying, as they all bring their own pleasures. :-)

The eye movement is interesting in this one. There are a few natural entry points. And I agree with you that it goes in a circular motion around the painting. But it looks like it is more natural to go counter clockwise. Do you think that is by design that it almost feels my eye movement should go counterclockwise?

Okay. I’ll be frank, as pleasant as you are to listen to, this painting, to me, is belabored, almost like a construction project. It is a combination of shapes, alone, when I really would like to see an attractive landscape. It’s more abstract, perhaps intentionally. My eye is drawn to the circular pond, a circle more than a pond, line of water down to it, another line of water away, to the right. So, I’d like to enjoy the painting more, but I can’t. Other stuff you’ve done, I like. Not this one.

LOL, Larry… it could be that the inktense pencils (at least applied this way) are not for you… or that this video isn’t edited quite enough. Which is probably isn’t! I see each attempt at art (and video making, storytelling, etc) as a triumph because each time I learn something new and progress towards the person/artist I am today. For those reasons, I really appreciate my attempts here… and probably even more so in the murky depths of my first few videos. :-) It’s all about having the courage to try something new.
