So effective in a tonal sketch. I use Lexington Grey for line but haven't thought to use it in a wash - I always dilute black for greys. As you say, LG is pretty neutral. It looks great with black lines and and a couple of grey tones. Thanks for sharing your ideas, I always enjoy them.

I love lexington grey! One of my favourite inks to write and draw with. Never thought to do quick tonal studies with it though. :0

You should try doing one of these gray paintings except with one or more buildings or objects done in color to draw attention to it. And perhaps instead of black sketch lines perhaps use a red or blue or other color. Since you're using ink instead of graphite there shouldn't be any issue with experimenting. I've seen this done occasionally when browsing people's sketches. Might be fun. Thanks for these tips and advice Teoh. Great sketch too! 👍 😄

You can also use a light grey to very loosely block out a basic shape / design, then go back in with black ink on top to refine it. It can be a faster way to prototype ideas.

Awesome video Teoh! I have Lexington grey, but I usually end up just diluting black inks instead. May I ask why you would choose Lexington grey over dilute black ink?
@teohyc5 жыл бұрын
You can as well. But not all India ink will have a neutral tone. Some are warm, some are cool. Lexington Gray is surprisingly neutral. That and it's more convenient because you don't have to mix. The gray is always consistent

Great video. I just ordered a 3oz bottle. Do you feel safe using it in your Pelikan M200 (clogging)? I have an M200 also. If not, I can use a cheaper Platinum Plaisir or Preppy, but prefer the Pelikan.

@@teohyc Hi Teoh! As a follow-on question, why not use a (diluted, inexpensive) black watercolor for a tonal study? Does ink have some properties that make it a better medium for a tonal study? You've mentioned that layers of ink don't make subsequent layers darker -- that would seem to be a drawback.... Thanks!
@teohyc4 жыл бұрын
@@SmasherBunny You certainly can use diluted black watercolour. It's a personal choice. Note that some black may look warm or cool but when diluted the colour temperature may change. Other blacks may appear patchy when painted. Some have texture, eg Sumi ink, Lunar Black, while others are just flat. You have to find the black that works for you.
@SmasherBunny4 жыл бұрын
@@teohyc Hmmm...I've never noticed any of this about black watercolors, as I basically never use them -- how interesting! Thank you :)

With the ink being waterproof, would you want to avoid using your nice sable paint brush and just use a cheaper synthetic brush instead?

Noodlers Ink is water-based ink so it's not going to damage the bristles.

Great Vid. Q. why use grey ink? why not just dilute black India ink to the grey tone you require?
@teohyc5 жыл бұрын
You can as well. But not all India ink will have a neutral tone. Some are warm, some are cool. Lexington Gray is surprisingly neutral.
@pdoubleyou78015 жыл бұрын
@@teohyc thanks, that's good to know. I'm based in UK and finding ink locally is quite hard. Lexington grey is available at a price, Sailor ink is mostly labeled 'Sailor GENTLE' and the websites I've visited do not go into details about its properties so your channel is a great resource.
@greyareaRK15 жыл бұрын
Wonderful stuff. How does Lexington differ from using a watered down black?
@teohyc5 жыл бұрын
Lexington Gray has a very neutral tone. You can dilute other black inks too. Some will appear warm, or cool. You have to find the right black ink to dilute.
