Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi joins New Wave History’s Hamza Hashim to discuss his latest book “Qaum, Mulk, Sultanat: Citizenship and National Belonging in Pakistan.” Dr. Qasmi’s book is a rich historical account of the discourse around the state-making project in Pakistan, and provides a thoroughly detailed and fascinating exposition of how the markers of identity that constitute Pakistani nationhood and citizenship were negotiated.
Dr. Qasmi comments on how most Pakistanis understand history through a reductionist and oversimplified template, which makes a mockery of the discipline by rendering complex phenomenon into caricatures. The use of history for ideological purposes and for the express purpose of supporting the state-making project has contributed to Pakistanis’ intellectual poverty over their own history.
