Greetings Luke. I discovered your channel today while searching for a solution to my PAL Master System 2 NTSC conversion issue. This video gave me the answer I was looking for, so thank you! I was on the right track (so near, yet so far…) I had already downloaded the CXA1145 data sheet and jumped pin 7 to 5V (even though you have a different RGB encoder here it seems it was the same pin for you). I also grounded pin 57 on the VDP and installed an NTSC crystal too. This is where I got stuck. I saw you borrowed the clock from the Z80 and fed it to the external clock of the RGB encoder. I wasn’t sure why this was needed, but thought I’d give it a shot, and viola! It worked. I was a bit shocked, didn’t expect that to be the issue. I would have never thought of it. Kudos to you for recording in HD a decade ago! I’ll be sure to give you a shoutout in my video. Wouldn’t have figured it out if I hadn’t found your channel. Cheers.

Haha, I knew I'd be rewarded if I went back on KZbin before I went to sleep. I figure I should update you from the last video, the CNC is now working perfectly. I'm having a really hard time getting specs for the PCE gear, or any information at all really. The only real help I got was from one of your old videos. Nice vid man definitely gives a simple look at how you did the mod. SMS Sonic is impressive though definitely better than most of the NES library. Awesome stuff man!

Woah! There're a lot of modding work in this video, good job Luke :) Luckly here in Europe most of the "modern" TVs (max 10-13 years old) are multistandard and can hang on both PAL and NTSC signals. A great feature for old NTSC console without an RGB out :)

How can anyone dislike this video? I find it fascinating the fixes/mods that Luke does and it inspires me to pickup some faulty systems and repair them. Like I did with my SCPH-1002 PlayStation which had a dead laser. All fixed now and I will make a video showing it at some point.

Tip for Sonic at stage 1:When you pass the immunity box (Screen with stardust)there is a down hill.When you start going down hit down so sonic turns around himself,then keep holding right on your D-pad.If you do it right,you will see Sonic outrun the screen.Nice vid Luke.

Most Master System II versions had the Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in, but rare Master System II copies had the Sonic built-in.

One TV wasn't helping either. So I got me a power base converter and a master system/mark3 to MD adapter cart so I can get them to run in 60hz on my modded MD1. Great video, sir. I like collecting for the Master System, since it's relatively cheap and easy ^^

Not all TV have Mono sound today. By hooking only one audio connector, you may get sound on one side only on some TV. By hooking up both left and right to the mono output, you're cloning the signal to both channels so it will always come out on both speakers.

How ironic to put a Sonic 1 cart into a Sonic Built-In Master System II But jokes aside Luke, good tutorial here mate. :) What I found out with the later Master System II consoles is the ones with the Fujitsu MB3514 chips versions are all Sonic Built-In games, another way to tell is the MPR chip number, (which i assume this one you got is MPR-15155 , I modded this beauty to S-Video and i noticed that it's shows little to no jailbars unlike the Alex Kidd in Miracle World Built-In one with the Sony CXA1145P chips since the jailbars are Very visible.

Cool mod :) I did something similar to my SMSII as well, the main difference is I tracked down a panel mount 9 pin mini DIN and wired it like the genesis 2 so I could use the genesis 2 cables (composite, dual mono, and RGB). Works great with my setup :)

hi guys i have done the mod for just the composite and audio but i cant get the colours to match up they are shifting on the screen any ideas ? i can get the audio fine and i can get the picture in as black and white but once i connect up the clock to the resistor the colour comes but just not fully ?

Just wanted to let people know that if they want to convert a PAL SMS II to NTSC, I'd suggest using a 0.001 uF cap instead of a 75 ohm resistor. When I used the resistor, the color tint was slightly off compared to a normal NTSC system, so adding a small capacitor helped out. It's not quite the same tint, but it's close enough.

Also, the capacitor for the composite output should have the negative lead going towards the *output*, not the input.

Hey Luke, instead of putting composite+audio jacks (3 holes), if it fits you should put an din-8 like classic MegaDrive/MS (1 hole). This will both include pinouts for RGB and Composite. Plus you will be able to reuse same cables you probably already have for genesis.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're tapping a mono signal, wouldn't it be possible to just use one audio jack instead of two?

Sadly using NTSC in PAL territories often is easier with even CRT TVs accepting both PAL and NTSC modes than the other way around in NTSC lands. RF remains a difficult thing though. I use a Philips VCR as an intermediary between my TV and old consoles with RF output. My VCR tunes into NTSC and PAL RF signals and outputs RGB or composite in either PAL or NTSC. I was very lucky that this unit was multi norm and switches between the two TV systems, it even switches to SECAM.

luke, if you have a power base converter for the original Genesis/Megadrive, couldn't you have done a 50/60Hz mod on the genesis and use through the power base converter? That would have been easier if it works!

Nice video as usual Luke! Are you looking for any EU systems? Need to get my hands on a sexy Master System with the Yamaha FM chip :) Or top of my wanted list a Famicom Titler ^^ Also looking for a N64 that can be RGB modded. Got a few 8-bit Nintendo's and Master System II's and Sega Mega Drive's or PAL N64 for trade. I would of course pay for any differences in value of the systems and shipping.

The way he hooked up the clock for the RGB encoder in this video might actually DAMAGE your encoder. You'd be feeding a 4.72Vish DC coupled signal into an IC pin that is expecting a 0.3V to 0.7V AC coupled signal. Source: Using my oscilloscope on my own console plus the MB3514 datasheet. My theoretical solution: Lift the leg of R10 closer to the cartridge slot and feed the clock signal into there instead, that way you can use the existing voltage divider and decoupling cap/band pass filter. I've yet to test this, but based on my engineering research it should work. I'll update once I try it later.
@retrobrw919
@retrobrw919 8 жыл бұрын
Solutiion works, and is recommended. DO NOT HOOK THE CLOCK UP LIKE HE DID IN THE VIDEO! Lift the leg of r10 by the cartridge slot and solder the wire from z80 pin 6 to it., You'll get perfect vibrant colors.

Hey Luke, the reason you're getting green bars around the Sonic games is real simple: They are Sega Game Gear ports. They haven't changed much. The Game Gear and SMS had very similar hardware. Lots of ports between the two.

Wow that ended up being way more complicated than I thought it was going to be, but of course you needed to do it for NTSC-J not Pal - Silly me. They really are a great console, there are heaps of great games. I actually want to 50/60 Hz mod my model I - don't need AV as it uses the Model I Genesis cable. Your console being the Sonic one means it is slightly a less common model. Far more Model II's sub models came out with Alex Kidd than Sonic.

This is a cry of desperation. I have tried multiple times to do this mod. Follow step by step instructions and I have failed to have a successful outcome. Why not just get a Japanese Master System plus cartridge converter? For the challenge of doing the mod, and having a Master System II that's NTSC? I mean, if you're not doing a PAL/NTSC switch, it seems like a lot of work to replicate something which already exists, just in a different case. Cool mod though, certainly... I do kind of hate Master System controllers. I always play my SMS with Genesis pads, except for the handful of (annoying) games which require SMS controllers.
