Palace Brothers at Thread Waxing Space, New York City, 6-24-94 (live)

Will Oldham solo, long before the birth of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. The last two songs of the set: 'Ohio River Boat Song' and 'I am a Cinematographer'. There was a professional crew there -- first time I ever saw a steadicam. I wonder where that footage is.

Saw Will play at the Lounge Ax in 1997? Arise Therefore. Solo w a drum machine. And a disco ball. Encoured w/ Like a Virgin by Madonna. Elliott Smith Either/Or opened solo playing in a chair in the middle of the bar. One of the best shows. Two wizards.

The full band Palace Brothers shows from this era, are some of the best that Will has ever played. There are bootlegs from Hoboken and Durham from that tour, and WIll is singing like a banshee on fire!! The live version of "Merida" from the first record is amazing! Someone below was talking about the "long-haired" Will era, when he was covering "Jack & Diane". That was the era right before "Joya" was released. I saw him on that tour, and also saw the "practice" show in Tallahassee that the band did before leaving on the "I See A Darkness" tour. By that time, he was short-haired with a long beard. It sucks that there isn't a lot of live footage of him before 2003.

See, he's still Will Oldham here, but once that hair on his head disappeared and found it's rightful home at the bottom of his face; he grew into the one and only Bonny Prince Billy whom we all love so much today.
