It sounds like he just wasn't communicating but the confusing part is that he wasn't communicating but when everyone was open to talking and urging him to talk. He just shrugged and said "no. I don't wanna talk." It seems like to me, he wanted to punish the others for supposedly not including him but when he was swiftly killed, he just took the L and left. Yeah, there are pieces of the story missing but it's clear Mill is withholding them and doesn't seem keen on sharing.

Listening to this, I got two things out of it: * The DM really should've popped in. It shouldn't've even gotten to the point they had to use the Astral Plane strategy. The fact this lasted for months on-end is a them problem, especially since Brush himself was a worried party and thus aware of the issue. They were here for Brush, not the game; Brush should've gotten involved. * Mill's deliberate paradox of "I want to communicate but I don't want to communicate" gives me the impression that they're very insecure (or perhaps anxious). They probably expected Brush to be their mouthpiece and when they didn't, they felt the need to lash out.

Well, that paradox is what actually makes me think the story is either made up or missing out details that probably don't paint OP or the rest of the group in the best light. To be bored with a game to the point of not bothering with it but still sticking with it for months and then suddenly hatching this elaborate revenge plan seems....unlikely. As a general rule, interpersonal problems are not and should not be resolved at the table with die rolls, if a story ends with the problem player getting BTFO'd by a quick thinking party then that's a bit of a red flag for me, a good DM should not only never let issues get to this point (they're not just the person running the game but also serve as a mediator for the group at large since they serve as the final authority) but they shouldn't treat a player (especially one who seems to have actual personal problems) as a boss encounter like this, if nothing else that is only going to escalate the feelings of division and conflict in the party by literally framing it as actual combat.

That sounds like the guy basically saying "I'm not having fun, so let's start everything over. I'm going to end the campaign by destroying the item we're protecting and killing the entire party, so then we can either stop playing or make all new characters and start a new adventure." Basically if he's not having fun, no one can have fun. That last edit makes me think that Mills thinks that D&D is just "hit monster with sword get XP and gold" rather than an actual roleplaying game, and that's fine if you want to play like that, but it sounds like the group he's in isn't for him if that's how he wants to play.

youd be surprised how much the RPG term has been conflated with videogames at this point. In videogames yeah there is roleplaying but its all just a multiple choice script, you dont have to actually interact with people organicaly which can be scary. I know when i started playing I tried to treat it like i was playing dragonage and quickly found myself lost and confused. also, i know many people that find it very hard to talk to people but also desperately want to be included in things. they are very very hard to work around but its not necessarily their fault. Mill was an ass about it yeah, but it didn't help that they let this go on for WAY TOO LONG without sitting everyone down and explaining what the hell was going on. We've had a few Mills in my group's time together and generally if you let them know they need to do their own interactions - even if you arent going to actually act you can still interact which might have helped mill a lot - they will eventually find their gaming voice somehow. if you aren't up for that kind of investment though (trust me its a lot of work sometimes and it is totally not your job as a player or DM to do this kind of thing) then dont just let someone sit there and suffer. if you can tell they arent having fun - even if they wont say they want to leave - then you need to make them stop because this is the kind of thing that taints friendships. short term asshole, long term friend.

@@xSaraxMxNeffx The thing is, a good role-player can make a REALLY interesting arc out of having a character start out shy and quiet and uncommunicative, and gradually learning to open up, at least with the group. But if the player refuses to communicate with the other players, that is unacceptable, and the entire group needs to USE THEIR WORDS, and say, "Look, you need to communicate with us. We are not mind-readers. We have no spell for that. We won't play this session, until you TELL US WHAT YOU WANT." You might need to be blunt, or you might be able to be subtle, but it MUST be done.

The DM had a duty to step in on that, preferably before it went off the rails, and definitely as it did. The player having his character quote real world concerns in his RP is a full-stop indicator the scene just has to end and discussion must take place. Also, basic DM skills, like asking where he got 216 bombs, would apply if it were not for this larger issue.

Some DMs allow for really weird crap without asking their players why they're doing something. My group's most frequent DM thought nothing of not only allowing our group's resident That Guy (before everyone realized that was in fact what he was) to request that his alchemist wizard be allowed to make horrible experimental poisons and do things like trade his soul away at the Goblin Market for powerful magical items that conveniently gave him ways around some of the worst of a wizard's fragile nature (we were playing 13th Age, where all magical items are sentient artifacts of great power, and having a number equal to your level drives you insane), while also giving a character he was already playing as batshit crazy free reign to be a violent madman. The DM's reasoning was equal parts being an "I do whatever it takes to keep my players happy" doormat and believing that our That Guy was just working through some issues (he'd screwed up royally with a girl at work, and basically went misogynist creeper seemingly overnight), so he let him get away with a ton of abusive behavior toward the rest of the group. It ruined what was otherwise a good campaign in terms of plot, because by the end it was all about the rest of the party against one abusive douchebag that the DM was willing to allow to get away with murder because he didn't want to hurt his feelings.

If the player had the bag, and the money to get all those bombs and the setting allowed for easy acquisition, there's not a lot the DM can do, i don't think the paladin just declared that and the DM just allowed, there's a lot of context clues we don't have here, they played the campaign for months, there's months of detailed information we're missing. The number of bombs was rather specific, 216, it stands to reason that the paladin used all their loot to acquire the bombs and again...if your setting allows for that, the DM can't really veto it, so it is conceivable. The DM homebrewed magical ressurrection flowers into the world, there's no telling what else was available. If the rogue had access to such a powerful magic item(teleporting daggers and a Robe of the Stars), it is fair to assume the paladin also got equivalent loot and valuables despite his clear desinterest. A robe of the stars is a very rare magic item, estimated value being 50.000 gold pieces. A keg of gunpower capable of detonating to deal 7d6 damage in an area is worth 250 gold. 216 kegs of gunpowder would come about 54.250 gold...its not too farfetched to believe the paladin really did have access to this, seems pretty reasonable within each of the party's individual budget.

@@aaronreynolds1504 I have a follow-up story to this, which is somewhat relevant to “being nonparticipant yet still engaged.” Due to scheduling, my next campaign had split session 1s, where different players get introduced to each other at different intervals. This makes partners/rivals within the full party before getting together. (We did this for the prior campaign, and was a lot of fun. One of those pairings was a Paladin of Light and a Cthullu Warlock; it turned into a “no evil babysitting duty”). For my session 0.1, I got paired with the DM from our prior campaign, somebody who can do lordly sorcerer, paranoid warlock, imposing dragon, snake oil dealer, and more. And I think we got paired because his character acted as a foil to mine. After over 30 minutes of me roleplaying… Look up “Elven Lied Lucy Zoo scene,” and replace her edginess with a Noble Lady façade. When I converse with others, I do my best to be a diplomat from the court of Misthaven. But the moment I step outside, it’s my first view of a beach and ocean, and I kick up some sand. Then I go into a shop, and it’s all tinker toys and wind-up toys; let’s just say I earned my DM Inspiration twice over. Anyway, after/with half an hour of that, in comes former-DM, as an Edgelord Bard who hates magicians. The DM tries to give him three opportunities to roleplay, but Edge gotta Edge. More of his roleplay was making sure I wasn’t going to steal from the shop, or taunting my height (2’8”, or 81.28cm). The last roleplay moment the DM offered EdgeBard was when we interrogated a cultist who attacked us. Well, more accurately, the city guards we fought alongside interrogated him as we watched. My naïve character didn’t participate, due to not being familiar with people fighting fellow people and interrogations. EdgeBard got into it only at the end, and used three intense sentences and Deception to make the cultist talk. Cultist admitted he was hired by a Half Dragon. When EdgeBard didn’t press further, I decided to let my naivety and innocence leak out, using the same tone as “but why male models” in Zoolander: “Half Dragon, half what?” That got an awkward laugh out of the table, and the question wasn’t answered. _(EdgeBard, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry if I stole your scene)._ I know former-DM is having a good time, despite being an Edgelord. He is thinking about his actions in game, and did a good job remaining aloof yet a participant. And (I hope) he is enjoying my antics, after me playing a serious yet friendly Rogue-Ranger. So yes, it’s possible to have fun, and get along with the party, even as an Edgelord. P.S. My DM decided to look up Half Dragons, and a could days later told me they aren’t a true race, but rather anything that is half dragon. So we joked about him being half butterfly (with wings too small to support him), half donkey (who brayed his words), or even half snail (slimy, with his shell acting as a helmet). We three around ideas of a minor retcon being the interrogated cultist either not knowing what the half race was due to never seeing him, or we don’t talk about his other half.

Back in my Forum RP days, I actually dealt with a guy like Mill, who one day out of the blue decided to use his admin powers to ban almost everyone and hide all the threads in one section to try and nuke the board. Thankfully, the owner of the forum was contacted and we managed to get the threads back where they were with the help of an online archive, but when we asked the ex-admin about why he did it, he refused to answer. So, my theory is that Mill was just biding his time until he could destroy the game, and decided not to talk with anyone even after the fact to keep his reasonings to himself, and may be planning to do the same thing in Brush's game. Alternative theory: Mill had a thing for Brush, and was jealous of all the fun Brush was having with other people, and decided to derail the plot after purposefully declining interaction to try and get Brush to defend his actions or something. I know I've been there before. Which still puts it all on his head for not trying to get over his issues or at least work on the things he has problems with so he can function in a social situation he chose to take part in. A disability like that isn't an excuse to be a problem or a nuisance. It's a reason to work even harder at understanding and practicing the social skills that don't come naturally. I'm actually autistic and have a bit of social anxiety at times and I'm trying to get into D&D as a way to practice and improve my communication and adaptation skills.

Yea, to me this one story sounds kinda fishy. "By the time he'd finished I'd managed to climb up to the building" This part disturbs me a lot. 1. Unless this is text-based and the player told their action to the DM privately, there's no way Mill won't hear or see that back-backstabbing plan. 2. The monologue is definitely out-of-character, and all people on the table just... roll with it and continue the session? "All 4 of us(including Brush) kinda start freaking out" This part also made me question thing further. Either everyone is new players and/or inexperienced, or there's something that was hidden. I think we can rule out the 'new players', since at the start of the story, the writer told that Mill's the new one in this kind of session. Inexperienced, probably. But it's weird that everyone on the table managed to stick to the end of session (Mill included) with such outburst. And Mill didn't ragequit either! (or just wasn't included in the story, but it made less sense since they're still in contact normally)

This story honestly feels a bit "and then everybody clapped" to me, so new player joins, is a problem right off the bat but despite everyone totally trying for months they just can't get through to him and rather than getting bored and leaving (even just leaving with a passive aggressive message calling everyone arseholes) he instead cooks up this dramatic plan to completely derail the campaign (that the DM does nothing to intervene against) that conveniently gives the OP and their friends a chance to show off how cool and quick thinking they are? I've had problem players try to cause disruptions at the table and in no instance did I just run with it and turn it into an encounter, that is the moment you stop the game, tell everyone to take a break or go home early (depending on whats convenient and how long things have been going on) and you have a serious talk with the problem player about whats going on and what can be done to solve things. Honestly, the main reason I'm not a huge fan of stories like this is that it gives players and DMs a bad impression that interpersonal conflict can and should be resolved at the table during a game, that if the party can defeat the problem player that the problem is all solved and everybody just goes their separate ways (like the player was literally just a boss fight for the rest of the party) when it just simply doesn't work that way in reality. TL;DR: I firmly believe this story is either fabricated or is missing a lot of details and context that likely wouldn't be particularly flattering to the party or DM.

Worst though, he caused trouble to others with dickish behaviour for what? if he didn't enjoy the campaign, he could've talked about it. If he couldn't talk about it, he could've left. Nope, he decided to upset the rest of the table by being an arse and wrecking their fun and the game. Heck, I've left games because I realised I wasn't happy with either the campaign itself or the group, and I'm TERRIBLE at communicating but I never tried to wreck it. OP and table, you are NOT responsible for Mill's lack of fun. It's not your fault. You tried to help and they preferred to sulk and behave like a bratty child. This dude is one hundred percent just an edgy "sad" boi trademark. I've met dozens of similar people in various chatrooms and RP groups all over the internet and in games. They act all quiet and depressed and are generally only interested in one person in a group, but as shown in this video, often tend to not want to interact or participate in ANYTHING so long as the whole group is there, no matter what anyone does. However, as also kind of shown in the group, this tends to be more of a cover than anything. It's not uncommon for them to snap and suddenly start spouting bullshit about how everyone ignores them, or doesn't like to interact with them, and they never get to do anything, while in some way verbally or RP wise attacking the rest of the group. And let me tell you, ITS NOT A JOKE to them. It's not "dramatic flair." This is honestly how they feel, and it's their way of getting comeuppance on those who "hurt" them. It's sad and pathetic because almost without fail, every single of these people I've met has had the others around them try to get them to open up, and to "help" them, but they literally don't want it. They want attention, but only from the people they like and they generally have no desire to do anything to try and get that attention other than act oh so melancholic.

His inability to understand what communication is and the importance of it suggests that he MIGHT have Asberger's or some other issue that makes interpersonal relations difficult. However, the rest of the gaming group was CORRECT to distance themselves from him a little. Unless everyone else in the gaming group was a certified psychologist/therapist to whom Mill was under their care, it was NOT their responsibility to "put up with" or "be compassionate" towards his actions and attitude. Mill may not be able to help the way he acted, but it was NOT APPROPRIATE for him to inflict it upon everyone else.

They began reinforcing the bad behavior of the 3 problem people and trying to help them, and hand wave away or comply when they were being dicks. yet none were professionals. It took a full on narcissist to tear through the group for me to see everyone's true colors. The manipulation was so bad that I got a bit of psychological trauma from being in that friend group daily. So I made the decision to leave. Now I'm feeling alot better. I'm probably 'on the spectrum' myself, but this event was my 1st real eye-opener that I need to be careful around strangers, and maybe work on my own attitude too. There's weird people I've encountered in games where they want really specific type of attention/attention from certain people. A player in a LARP mentioned his character is shy, is supposed to be acted upon (????) etc. So I took that to mean, "OK, I'll interact with him first." and him in character blew me off at pretty much Hello. Wasn't playing an edgelord character either, I was just sort of ignored. So then the player is complaining later about noone talking to him, not getting any spotlight/attention then I brought up that I had tried repeatedly (I did attempt more than once) and he clearly wasn't interested. He then sort of changed the subject. There's really not much you can do with a player like this because they expect people to just spotlight them without any effort on their part, will snub people despite wanting attention, then complain about not getting to do anything. It's a weird trait that people who's entire personality is passive aggression. I would honestly just not invite the person, explain how you made attempts, made people feel bad about them not having fun. Just don't include them.

I have a player who never understands their own abilities, they love D&D and talk about playing it all the time, but in all the times they have been playing I've never once seen them use any of their subclass abilities, never once. He was was a Berserker Barbarian who never Frenzied, an Archfey Warlock who never used Fey Presence or Misty Escape despite constantly being in situations where it would have saved him big time and despite being pact of the Chain he never used his Familiar to do anything and so many other things, he's never once used his subclass abilities on any character and even worse is that while forgetting what abilities he does have, he's constantly trying to use abilities he doesn't have. Like when he wanted to use the Sending spell as a Warlock, I explained that if he wanted that spell as an Archfey Warlock, he'd need to go Pact of the Tome and take an Invocation to get Ritual Spells or take a feat to get Ritual spells since it wasn't on his spell list, he didn't do either of those things and then many sessions later, he tells me that he wants to use Sending, a spell which he doesn't have and can't get, I explained this and he said "No, I can still cast it as a ritual" which confused me since he hadn't taken Pact of the Tome, Book of Ancient Secrets or Ritual Caster, so I explained it again that he couldn't cast ritual spells since Warlock doesn't have Ritual casting as base, he debated it a bit and asked if he could pay someone to teach him how to cast Sending as a ritual and I once again explained why he couldn't, that was the end of that, until next session when he had the exact same idea to cast Sending and we had the exact same conversation where I had to explain why he couldn't, then it happened the next week and the next, I had to explain the same thing 4 sessions in a row and it got to the point where I told him if he brought up Sending one more time I'd kick him.

I completely understand mill's actions. I was the same way with a group of guys i tried playing with, however I didn't act like the "quiet not having fun guy" for no reason. There's a lot of things that factor into a noobs actions when trying dnd, like trying to understand the game, characters, and the people you play with. There's obviously more but those were the main ones for me. Anyway, the first couple sessions were....ok at best and often times I felt like I was getting dragged around like a dog on a short and tight leash. More often than not, the veteran players would get so into rp that I just found myself listening and by the time they were done, everything had been done already since they were in the spotlight and so when I felt like i could finally say something, there was nothing to say anyway which resulted in me getting the "you need to talk and participate more" speech. And so i tried getting more involved but everytime i tried, i would get shut down immediately because of some reason or another and after awhile it didn't feel like a party of adventurers but rather a party plus a tag along side character. it never changed after even after i tried, like mill, to say im not having fun. So that's where i think the " i really want to have fun but don't want to say anything" comes from because there's almost no point in saying anything anyway because it has already been resolved, or is shut down a lot. I think if theres a noob, obviously dont make him a chosen one or anything but just be a little more cautious about the newness to the game. So i don't think mill is a weirdo or anything for doing what he did.

So what youre saying here is:" Hey, I had a bad experience as a dnd noob and I wouldn't seriously sit people (who didn't know they weren't including me because i didnt telll them) down to tell them my feelings and what they should or shouldn't do while not having fun and not being very clear or just getting shutdown which means i was playing with assholes, but still keeping on playing for some reason, so it's ok to just ignore everyone when they're asking what you want or need, not even give a full sentence as an answer to any question and then have a childish temper tanrum in an attempt to say "if I can't have fun noone can" ????????? everybody has a responsibility to communicate and the responsibility for their own fun. If you need help, are not enjoying yourself or need something to change and then dont (quickly) tell people or tell people, have them not do anything/shut you down and continuing as before, then you shouldn't be playing with that group instead of whining about how they're not doing anything for you. In the end the other people aren't responsible for your fun and even though dnd is an attempt to work together to have fun only you are responsible in the end. Lashing out after not trying to communicate like Mill is absolutely pathetic no matter if youre on the spectrum, suffer from mental illness or whatever the fuck kindof excuse you have. I'm sorry you had a bad time, but you are responsible for keeping on going there after nothing keeps happening to help you. This kindof behavior is absolutely disgraceful to yourself, which is the person you obviously should be choosing for

To be fair, I have played as a silent paladin sort - Yuan-Ti Pureblood Paladin of Vengeance with Criminal Background (basically, due to a war between Giants and Dragons ending in favor of Giantsclear tank, , with society levels being sorted Giant Style, reptilian sorts are one social level lower than those of the same size). Basically, the initial party comprised of a water genasi sorcerer, a fire genasi wizard, and a dex-based aarakocra cleric (who was the pet-slave of the wizard). Since the group needed a clear tank sort, I decided to play as a Paladin, and my mother played as a Feral Tiefling Hunter Ranger, with a Folk Hero background, to act as a back-up tank, and to do distant damage. Essentially, we were hired muscle, more or less in it for the money - probably would have altered motives as need be if there was more to the job than just helping to retrieve artifacts for the squishier spellcasters. Then we picked up a Mountain Dwarf Druid. Still, there was an interesting RP moment when my Yuan-Ti paladin got between the cleric and a strange woman, who was a little too into the bird's feathers. Turns out, she, and her sister, were succubus, and that was an interesting fight as we were low on, or out of, spell slots (and the sorcerer and ranger weren't at the fight). Lead to my guy getting knocked out thrice, only for the cleric to keep reviving him - it was a close one.

I had a very similar thing happen in a different TTRPG system. It was in a sci-fi setting, with my sister GMing. This guy was playing this sort of slime alien, and the plot hook both him joining our crew (my character was the captain) and to get the plot rolling was that he worked for an organization that had gotten its hand on a very advanced small ship (basically, normally ships this small don't have FTL, but this one not only did, but it was on par with the military's top line warships). So, this slime guy (the character was named Jubjub and wore a "perpetually tipped fedora" according to his character sheet, I shit you not) brings us the ship for covert transportation, not wanting to attract attention by flying it to where he needs to sell it. Now, Jubjub comes out of the ship into our hangar/cargo bay armed with a plasma pistol, which is a VERY dangerous weapon. Over the intercom, I ask him to disarm before we come down to greet him, but he refuses. Now, I have no desire to start an in-character spat. I'm trying to take the plot hook and have him join the crew, but in-character my pirate captain has no reason to just suddenly trust this heavily armed stranger. I give him two more chances to disarm before I go down there. He continues to refuse. Fine, I guess this will get dragged out. I grab a stun pistol and meet him in the hangar. I don't wait for him to make a move. I don't introduce myself. I open fire immediately and stun him, leaving his gelatinous form as a puddle. I proceed to take his plasma pistol, scan his ship (as my character is a scientist and wants to learn what he can about it), then leave the hangar, leaving him there before he can wake up and locking the doors. Big mistake. Once Jubjub wakes up I give him YET ANOTHER chance to just calm down and talk with us, but he's having none of it. He retreats back into the advanced ship and starts to private message my sister (we were doing this over Discord). While he does this, our ship is stopped by a military patrol ship that I believe had intel on the ship and was trying to secure it for themselves to reverse engineer it. Now it's revealed why Jubjub ran back into his ship. He activated self-destruct. We have a few minutes to try to shut it down. Myself and our crew's doctor rush down to the hangar and try everything we can to get the ship's door open, but fail our rolls to do so. We have a minute left, and I know it's a lost cause. The doctor and I book it to the elevator and I order our engineer, over the comms, to close EVERY door on our ship. The little ship explodes, taking nearly half my ship with it, and we're left dead in space, flying half a ship, with a military ship in front of us that just saw half out ship explode. This was the 2nd session of the campaign... We end up making a deal with the military ship to haul us back to civilization in exchange for the results of the scans I THANKFULLY ran on the ship earlier. Jubjub was now dead and we kicked the player out of the game for being such an idiot. The campaign unfortunately ended there as my sister got a new job and couldn't make the time, though I am happy to say, 3 years later, I started up a new one set in the same setting, with new characters, though my PC from the old game is now an NPC (don't worry, not an OP DMPC, just a regular NPC that works for a guy that gives them jobs) and we're going strong for a year now and everyone loves the campaign. 2 of the original players, one of which is playing his old character (the doctor), and 2 brand new players. My sister is unfortunately too busy now to join us, hence why I'm GMing it now. We still make jokes about Jubjub to this day. I also have another story of the same character being an idiot in D&D. Another day, maybe.

He could have some sort of a bipolar disorder. Seeing as how he seems to pass in a very chaotic succession between an uninterested apathetic behaviour to that of an intensely dramatic persona that suddenly feels the weight of his own other persona's lack of interest as a attack from others. (Or, he's the kind of person that expects others to be far more forceful in their caring attempts and is seeing the people in question not doing so as them "failing" him somehow.)

I had a friend like that. He asked me to join a game his friend was running. I joined up and my friend (wizard) just tagged a long with my character. When asked what he was going to do, he'd point to me and say i'm following him. It was diffcult just because he would hardly interect or do anything different except when messing with another player (the group punching bag)

I'm kind of curious why a paladin trying to blow up a town still has any of their class features during this dramatic moment. The armor suddenly restricts your movement instead of protecting it, the aura is gone, and you feel a black wind where your divine connection was...

Unless he was a Paladin in some sort of class-specific magic armor, then nothing would likely happen in that regard. No matter the enchantment, it doesn't just fail if their class powers fail, because it's not attached to their class. And AC is determined by one's armor (and shield) plus Constitution mod, so his absurd AC wouldn't have been changed by falling as a Paladin, either. Also, given that Mill doesn't use any of his Paladin abilities except Lay On Hands, it likely wouldn't matter to him. Also, while there's a small sidebar note in the PHB for 5e about Paladins breaking their oaths, it's _not_ part of the actual class mechanics from the look of things. It appears to be more of a "you could do this flavorful thing, if the circumstances happen," than a mechanic or a rule. There is not a 3.5e-style "a Paladin who does something deemed naughty will have their powers stripped and their alignment forcibly changed" rule about fallen Paladins. Plus, given the way Mill didn't really use any of his Paladin abilities, I doubt it would've hurt him much to take his class abilities, nor would the roleplay implications be of any sort of importance.

It's really a shame, that would have been an amazing plot twist if it were planned. Honestly, this sounds like a guy who wants it to be all about him, but put none of the effort into it. He wants to sit back on a gilded throne while all sing his praises and that would have appeased him. He's probably played too many power fantasies like Halo or Skyrim.
