Ya but you all have to be careful and monitor liver function in tests. Because the skin always looks good vegan in the beginning but i have known at least 2 vegans maybe 3 or ex vegans who had serious skin problems caused by liver problems after being vegan for 4-6 years. The range of amino acids to feed the liver some more rare in plant foods like glycine glutamine and precursors to glutathione are low in plant foods. Anyway both of them were devote vegans even having their own website promoting veganism and organic vegetables. sprouts ect with speakers and writers that could add their info on the website but only if they were promoting veganism. And they still did this when they had to change from the diet because of their life threatening liver situation. Just look around for people you will find what i found. Or maybe in Canada its too cold to be vegan. But PHD in nutition Chris Masterjohn also had a life threatening situation eating vegan and regained his health eating meat. And he is not fat. Its one sided information. There are so many people who do their best to eat perfect but fail on vegan diets.

I've been vegan for 8 years, but struggle keeping myself off vegan junk-food (cookies, cakes, oily foods). Since going on holiday this year in Sweden and having all of my favourite vegan baked goods, crisps, ice cream, etc. for 3 weeks, I haven't been able to shed the 3 kg I gained as a result (despite hiking and biking lots during the summer and autumn). I'd say I'm relatively active. Although I sit during working hours, I don't have a car, and I walk and bike most places if I can (and use public transport when it's too far). Now I've decided to go on a healthy, whole-foods, plant-based diet a week ago, and have already come down 1.5 kg in a week (WITH NO ADDED EXERCISE). Also, my mood has been so good and my energy levels excellent! This is such a great way of eating. Also, cravings are completely gone within a couple of days. Now I really don't even want to cheat on this way of eating, because if I do, I know my cravings will come back.

How about we add raw vegan as another distraction. Many people get sucked in to believing that a raw vegan diet is the healthiest way to be. From what I have seen there is no good evidence that raw vegan is any healthier than a healthy cooked food vegan diet. Look at how many people end up giving up a raw diet. Even some promoters of raw veganism aren't raw anymore. If raw were so great and healthy people would be able to stick with it. Starches are something most (many?) people can stick with. I wonder how fruit cultivation compares to starch cultivation from an environmental standpoint?

I love Dr. McDougall's work! I must strongly disagree, however, with the idea that GMO is just a distraction. First of all, it's been shown to cause severe and life-threatening problems, and many doctors have taken their patients off all GMO. My wife and I realized that's why we couldn't tolerate corn (severe digestive issues) -- because we'd had non-organic, and it was GMO. When we learned about genetic modification, we tried some organic corn, and had no problems with it whatsoever. Secondly, it doesn't just sit there in a GMO farmer's field, but spreads itself to neighboring farms, sometimes 50 miles or more away; and once that neighbor's crop is contaminated, it can't be "uncontaminated." As much as one-third of organic corn loads now test positive for GMOs at a low level. "Ears of corn may have a handful of kernels that test positive. All we know is it's becoming an increasingly difficult issue." Monsanto has sued hundreds of farmers after the farmers' crops were infected, and therefore the property of Monsanto. If the brakes aren't somehow placed on Monsanto's efforts to eventually own the food supply, they'll succeed. If you don't mind removing corn, soy, and whatever else they choose, from the world's safely edible food supply, then keep on ignoring or downplaying GMO. It is a MAJOR issue.
@TurboDally11 жыл бұрын
"...GMO...it's been shown to cause severe and life-threatening problems..." Do you have evidence of this? I'm having difficulty believing you on another note- your demonisation of an entire technology, not shoddy corporate practises, but the technology. So I'm curious to know/see what kind of evidence you have other than anecdote. "Monsanto has sued hundreds of farmers after the farmers' crops were infected, and therefore the property of Monsanto." This goes both ways, as farmers have also sued Monsanto because of contamination because of GMOs.
@benfaust11 жыл бұрын
TurboDally Yes, and good for the farmers for fighting back. If I was a farmer and my crop got contaminated, I'd sue them too. That's reasonable. If I was a farmer and their stuff blew over into my field by no fault of my own and then THEY sued ME? Do you really think that's equivalent? And does it matter whether it's the technology or just corporate practices? It can take the equivalent of 20+ years of testing to uncover potential problems caused, and if we get it wrong, we could have contaminated the whole food supply before finding out (it could take centuries to clean up all the GE corn and soy crops in the world today, and trillions of dollars). We should work with nature, instead of trying to change it. When we do the latter, we always manage to mess things up. Here are just three articles and one site covering some of the studies proving GE is unsafe. It's incredibly easy to find countless more. earthopensource.org/index.php/news/60-why-genetically-engineered-food-is-dangerous-new-report-by-genetic-engineers www.liveinthenow.com/article/gmo-dangers-how-much-more-proof-do-we-need responsibletechnology.org/gmo-dangers gmoevidence.com/

Most vegan men don't look "lean" to me; they look scrawny and weak. Being 10-20 pounds "overweight" isn't unhealthy, nor does it cause disease; it's purely a cosmetic issue until you start getting into obesity. No matter what diet you use, you have to use your common sense. If you douse everything in copious amounts of coconut oil and gorge yourself on steak you're going to put on weight. That's not what the paleo diet is about. It's about eating the sorts of foods that we thrived on for millions of years. It's ridiculous to say that a food that formed at least a portion of our diets for all those years is bad for us, and that we are better off eating grains and legumes, which, even if our paleo ancestors ate some of when they could find it and figured out how to prepare them so they didn't get sick or die (in the case of legumes) probably made up a tiny portion of their diet. We didn't start using these foods as staples until about 10,000 years ago, and they wreaked havoc on our bodies when we did. We lost height, started having all sorts of dentition problems and greater disease on a grain and legume based diet.

In 1995 a book was written called" the good calorie diet by Phillip Lipetz" and then he wrote another book called "naturally thin and powerful" which talked about the like between serotonin and the proper foods. Lipetz was the first person to talk about the glycemic index whereas only diabetics understood it. The book was highly scientific, so it was not a great hit. But he even thought that corn and white potatoes were too "sweet" and raised the blood sugar. Rice cakes were bad. some things were worse than table sugar, back then he even brought up high fructose corn syrup. He also didn't want people to eat too much fat including cheese dairy and eggs (sparingly) and maybe a little meat (sparingly) The good news is pasta is made a certain way that makes it digest slower and is a "good calorie". He explained how too much meat will eventually raise your blood sugar also. People that came from poor countries were thin til they came to America and could afford meat and animal products.

McDougall is not saying to focus attention on animal products at the expense of GMOs. Wheat (through gliadin and WGA, the wheat lectin) causes leaky gut for everyone to some extent, not just for celiac. That is often why someone will suddenly experience intolerence or allergy to certain types of food. That's part of the reason grains is the first thing to drop for people with non-celiac IBD. The other reason is that it also causes disbyosis which exacerbates leaky gut.

Based on the title of this video, I figured John was at least an accredited scholar in nutrition or biology, but looking into his background, I guess he's just a general physician (?), so I guess it's no surprise he would state something so widely rejected. "Carefully conducted clinical trials have found that following a low-fat diet does not make it any easier to lose weight than following a moderate- or high-fat diet. In fact, study volunteers who follow moderate- or high-fat diets lose just as much weight, and in some studies a bit more, as those who follow low-fat diets." 1. 1. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19246357 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19246357 "When compared with dietary interventions of similar intensity, evidence from RCTs does not support low-fat diets over other dietary interventions for long-term weight loss." 2. 2. www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587%2815%2900367-8/fulltext The second one a search through 53 different studies. What it comes down to is calorie intake vs. calorie consumption, not what the source of the calorie is. In other words: "A calorie is a calorie..." 3. 3. ajcn.nutrition.org/content/79/5/899S.full

Yes, that outdated cliché desperately needs to be retired already! The fat I eat is the fat I BURN. I eat LOTS of fat and I'm as lean as he is. And there are lots of healthy vegan fat sources! When I ate low-fat I had brain fog, lethargy, menstrual irregularities, and a perpetually-puffy stomach. Low-fat doesn't work for everyone.

Reasons to go vegan people! 1. lose mucle mass 2. prevent growing and brain development 3. turn your body hyperglycemic 4. turn into constant katabolism 5. get gut irritation 6. ruin insulinsensetivity and bloodsugar regulation 7. age your cells 8. get vitamin defeciensies and lack of b12 9. feeling constantly hungry 10. rais your bad cholesterol 11. lack of essential amino acids 12. lack of essential fatty acids I think the world is in for a big issue. There are all these vegans and vegetarians out there who just keep complaining about the meat being bad for our health and for the environment. the first statement is totally false; - Meat is not bad for our health we have been eating meat since the beginning of our human race. It has been our primal source of protein and fat and many times main macronutrient. If we were to consume soy, legumes and grains in order to provide ourselves with vegetarian protein we would have a big problem getting all the essential amino acids, as well as a lot of us having big problems dealing with all the ant nutrients, lektins and hard digested starch. And it would DEFINITELY not be better for our health as it would damage our gut and ruin our hormonal balance. The second statement is also misleading; - If everyone would stop consuming meat it would be replaced with foods like, tofu and quorn. They would have to grow bigger greenhouses which consumes extreme amounts of energy and poisons the environment with spraying. And it would still have to become and industrial process in order to produce. This would only replace the carbon dioxide issue from farms with something else.

I suggest you try a whole plant food diet. I don't seem to have any problem with grains myself, but if you're determined to avoid them I suggest you still try a vegan diet. Just make sure to eat plenty of starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, legumes and winter squash. Add to that fruit and lower calorie vegetables, and you'll become very healthy!

The Standard McDougall diet did literally nothing to his massive list of health issues and multiple autoimmune diseases. He stopped the gluten and is doing SO much better! I can't thank you enough for the work that you do. I had no idea that Celiac disease was an autoimmune disease (I thought it was just a digestive issue), and upon doing more research, I found that every health condition that he had can be contributed to Celiac.

Because for 12 years prior to the diet change, his disease was continuously getting worse and worse. After the diet change, over the course of like ~6 months, his symptoms progressively got less and less until the improvement plateaued and that's where he's still at 3 years later. I would say overall he's 80-90% better than what he used to be and he's been really happy with it. So, the first half of your post says that there are no long-term, third-party tests. If that's the case, what scientific reason do you have for thinking there's anything wrong with them? Note: I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong with them, I'm just pointing out that a lack of tests cuts both ways. The only "super-strains" of bugs produced by modified crops are bugs that are immune to the particular adaptation in the particular crop. What difference does that make to us?

I’ve done keto for months and it never worked. I had stages where (despite eating normal calories) I would be starving like I was dying and eat 5,000 - 10,000. Although my skin was fabulous and I stopped bloating, Keto just never worked for my body. I think the key is being aware of where your food is coming from and avoiding processed foods and vegetable oils. I started paleo because I’m celiac and some grains can mimic gluten and still give celiacs reactions. I know people who have done Keto and thrived. I think it’s about finding what works for your body and avoiding the poisons in the supermarkets. I’m still trying to find what does. I only eat organic, especially with meat and eggs. I have insulin resistance so I really do NOT lose weight and I gain on high carb and my blood sugar gives me a lot of highs and lows. When I don’t have animal proteins long-term, I get constant headaches and have no energy (even when replacing with other healthy proteins). I started reducing carbs on paleo and began to feel like I couldn’t be satiated again (like I felt in keto). I feel like it’s a balance. And I feel that different bodies have different needs. I think the people who swear by specific diets (keto, paleo, starch) is because it’s worked wonders for them. I think we need to realize that different bodies respond differently. The only “one-size fits all” is that no one should be eating the standard toxic foods and chemicals and not overeating sugar. As far as keto, paleo, starch, etc. I think it depends on the person’s body. I also like how paleo cuts out inflammatory foods like legumes and dairy. I have SIBO (from years of untreated celiac) and an autoimmune disease. So paleo is very healing to me. But, people jumping in fads and eating tons of processed foods, undoes the purpose of these diets.

The author of Wheat Belly stated in his book that "wheat has been modified genetically". I forgot the exact date, but the scientist that founded a way to make wheat harvest-able 2 times a year won a Noble Peace prize for his work to end world hunger around the 40's or 50's. Mr. Davis also states that since that start we have seen the amount of gluten inside the grain multiply 100's of times over. Also that for some people just eating a slice of bread can be like eating a candy bar. Sugar, is stored by the body as FAT, ask any one who takes insulin (fat storage hormone) when their sugar levels are high. Mc Dougall is really "cherry picking" his facts to show his view..... Those Oreo's that lasted 40-something min in his house..... have more refined sugar than EVER!! Time marker 22:45 - Look at the rates of obesity rise during the 80's, Low fat was in its prime. I remember Snackwell cookies (lowfat), and the high sugar low fat yogurt. Anyone who what in that decade knows what the food industry did to meet the public demand for Low Fat foods, the same is happening for Gluten free foods. When you take something out, they gotta put something in its place.

He doesn't say anything about eating raw either. This is a beginner's guide to smartening up about your diet. He makes it very clear. Once you get to the point where you're eating vegan... THEN proceed to avoid GMOs, buy organic, and buy local. But those are ADVANCED dietary concerns.

I love you Dr. McDougall and I am wondering if you still hold these same views on gluten. The evidence seems to show that many people are also affected by “non celiac gluten sensitivity”. This is also damaging the intestinal lining leading to autoimmune diseases similar to celiac. I personally have seen drastic improvements in my health when I gave up gluten. Complete remission of my plantar fasciitis and it was 90 percent better the first week off of wheat. I also have had partial clearing of my my psoriasis that I’ve had for 30 years. I’ve never seen a dramatic change like this in my psoriasis in 30 years. Giving up wheat was the only change I made to see these results. Could it be something else in the wheat other than gluten like gliadin or a toxic contamination from the chemical pesticide Glyphosate (Round Up)?

I agree with McDougall that plant-based diets are healthier. What he neglected to say about "Wheat Belly" is that today's wheat has been altered by bathing wheat seeds with sodium azide (a poisonous gas). The book was more about eating poison than about eating gluten as Mr. McDougall has suggested. Does that mean McDougall is in support of eating poison? Why can't we just eat a plant-based diet that is not genetically altered by humans? That sounds like a healthier choice to me. That said, I did like McDougall's slideshow on all the low-carb guru's showing that they were fat, so McDougall is not completely out of the ball park with his suggestions.
@purplemutantas9 жыл бұрын
The Guru We can't eat food that isn't altered by humans because of this thing called civilization. The plant foods we have now aren't the same as the plant foods that ere available in the wild. If I am not mistaken wild potatoes were toxic. It took intervention by humans to make potatoes edible.
@donriffel80059 жыл бұрын
I agree that taking poisons "out" of a plant is civilized. However, putting poisons "in" to a plant to improve yield is not civilized, which is what my comment was about. Humans can intervene for good or for bad. You cannot lump all interventions into one category.

It is worse if it is whole wheat than when it's refined so I removed gluten from my diet because it gives me serious mood swings as depression or PMS. I think the sensibilities could be real as I am also lactose intolerant too and I get terrible stomach cramps and AWFUL farts after eating lactose ... so it's not my imagination. People should understand and accept once and for all that not all people are as equal and everyone has a different stomach ..

As a celiac, I can definitely say there is WAY too much gluten-free junk food out there. And it's *worse* than regular junk food. More sugar, more fat, etc., just to make it taste good. The only way to be a healthy celiac really is to eat gluten-free whole foods. Basically vegan without the wheat, barley, and rye. It's super EASY! I do it every day. I'm grateful to the popularity of gluten-free diets in making it easier to eat at a restaurant and to have labeling on packages, but it would be a HUGE help if all the attention-seeking fake celiacs would go the fuck away and stop giving us a bad name. They're so annoying...

Stephen Otto Just because Dr. McD calls the gmo issue a distraction, does not mean that he thinks they are safe. He is very focused on trying to get people to eat a much maligned, and much needed diet that he KNOWS can save lives. The gmo issue is a distraction or could be for HIM. You see how you have changed the subject from eating a plant based diet to the gmo issue.
@happyhippy659 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Lynes Actually if you think about it, if enough people stopped eating animals and their products, the biggest market for gmo corn and soy would be lost since most of it goes to feed food animals. Most of the gmo's are eaten when people eat meats and milk products. I'm not positive but I believe drive-ins and commercial producers are the next biggest customers for organic potatoes (Lays?). Followers of Dr. McD eat none of that. He didn't SUPPORT gmo's, he just doesn't want to change the focus from not eating animals and their products. He may be missing a chance here but he is not supporting gmo. Nothing precludes a person from following his way of eating AND avoiding gmo's, like I do. I also contribute money to organizations who are trying to label gmo's. And he isn't a "researcher" - he is a medical doctor in practice who actually cures people of ailments, not just hand out pills.

The only thing I disagree with mcdougall on is about gluten. Gluten sensitivity is no joke. Just because someone is not celiac does not mean they don't have autoimmune reactive protein to gluten. I ate half a loaf of organic sprouted wheat bread today. I feel awful, just like when I eat processed gluten. I have tested negative for celiacs. The symptoms I get after I eat gluten are: pressure headache, vision spots, anxiety/mild hallucinations. I have read significant literature on how gluten sensitivity can bring about schizophrenia and autism. this is something mcdougall should really look into. I feel like he doesn't look into it because he has been spreading the same info for so many years that he doesn't feel the need to study in depth about gluten. I respect that , but I just really need to put it out there it just isn't for everyone. I really need to be careful with it. It makes me feel so anxious and strange.
