This near-1 Hour Nordic Ambient / Doom material is an eclectic and experimental musical endeavour inspired by the Norse mythology and the mythic ages of Old. All lyrics are on Old Norse language (as written in Eddas). Music that you'll hear is a peculiar mix of neofolk, ritual ambient, doom metal and epic neoclassical. All that blend made the sound as a whole fresh and unique, yet still breathing with mythical, ancient feeling. The album is an archetypal, but at the same time, very personal emotional journey, as one can't help but project his being through the heroic Self and identify himself with the protagonists of Old.

Each track represents a retelling, or "channeling" of some part of the Saga, taken directly from the Prose and Poetic Eddas by S.Sturluson. They mainly follow the chief Norse god - Odin (or Óðinn), but are also telling about the time of Giants or Jötnar. The title of the album (and the opening piece) translates as "Of Ymir's Flesh", referring to the father-giant of the entire world and the creation of the world, according to the ancient myth.

Actually, Odin is a rather cruel and devious old man, very much like he is represented in American Gods. I have an interest in Norse history and mythology but I don't think trying to revive the worship of their gods is a good idea because the archetypes they represent are totally out of place in civilized society...and could you imagine what would happen if I decided to blood eagle someone?
@SableAradia1
@SableAradia1 6 жыл бұрын
This is assuming the gods don't change with culture and the needs of their worshipers. And why shouldn't they? The Christian god has. The Egyptian gods were worshiped for 5000 years; I doubt they stayed the same the whole time.
@sarahgray430
@sarahgray430 6 жыл бұрын
@@SableAradia1 If the gods of a society change sufficiently over time then they are not the same gods because they no longer represent the same archetypes. Granted, different people interpret these archetypes differently but if you assigned the name Odin to a figure who fit a more modern set of ideals you would not be worshipping the old Norse god of war and wisdom but an impostor...rather like how many people today have replaced the historical Jesus of Nazareth with a bland all-forgiving and totally unrealistic image of a smiling hippie sitting on a cloud somewhere and for much the same reason...the original archetypal figure distresses them too much. In a sense Odin and Christ are real because the archetypes they represent exist in all of us...but I for one align myself with Christ because he represents self sacrifice and humility whereas Odin is represented as arrogant, cruel, manipulative and concerned with no one's well being but his own...you might as well worship Donald Trump!😆
@SableAradia1
@SableAradia1 6 жыл бұрын
Funny. Your view of Odin (not that I'm disputing it) is pretty much my opinion of the Christian god. Jesus is all right, but people tend to manipulate their interpretation of his message to suit their prejudices and preconceived ideas. And Trump claims Christianity as his faith, so aligning yourself with Christ seems to hardly protect you from acting like his opposite. Personally, I think the world would be a better place if people gave up monotheism. It lends itself to the belief that one's choice of monotheistic deity is superior to others; or, worse yet, the only one, and therefore, everyone else's gods must be demons or delusions. A quaint conceit, really.

The first thing I would like to explain is that I never claimed that the "old gods" were inherently bad...they represented archetypes that (in the context of the societies that they originally existed in) served a valid purpose, but over time they were supplanted by other archetypal figures, and that attempting to revive more primitive archetypes in a belief that doing so will bring back a fantastic "golden age" that (at least according to archaeological data and some of the more credible historical accounts) was not as golden as many people believe makes no rational sense...especially if your understanding of said beliefs is based on Wikipedia and on modern neopagan books and Web sites. I for one base my assessment on a familiarity with the Norse sagas and the Eddas (which even if you believe were "made up" by Snorri Sturlusson are pretty much all we know of the beliefs of the pre Christian Norse except for one or two contemporary sources like Ibn Fadlan and Adam of Bremen) and with a passing familiarity with the Latin and Greek classics. Technically speaking none of these manuscripts are actually "pagan" because the people who wrote them were educated patricians and priests rather than illiterate country dwellers (which is what the word "pagan" means in Latin) but an educated person living in the times that they were writing about (e.g:Pliny or Publius Tacitus) or a few centuries later (e.g: Snorri Sturlusson or Saemund Sigvusson) would probably have a clearer assessment of the history and beliefs of the periods that they wrote about than a modern person whose main sources of information are Wikipedia and fashionable revisionist history, and as such modern neopaganism has more to do with the beliefs and aspirations of modern people, which if they are not founded on a solid basis of ethics are generally vapid and self serving...indeed I suspect that the deity you claim to honour really has nothing to do with the Diana Aradia of classical thought (a personification of the moon and generally both revered as the protector of animals and virgins and feared as the bringer of madness and lunacy and whose cult was characterized by a strong emphasis on fasting and flagellation) but an archetype derived from your own psyche which seems to be a particularly arrogant and self serving one, which is why I compared you to Donald Trump, though perhaps Sarah Palin would be a better comparison (in fact she's closer to the Aradia archetype than you are because she hunts with a bow and considers herself a guardian of virtue! Finally I think that you are a little confused about the meaning of the word "hypocrisy" if you apply it to me simply because I disagree with you. I say what I mean and I practice what I preach and I have no need to deceive anyone and I will speak and act as my conscience dictates...and my conscience tells me that you have never really thought about what you really believe and how your actions affect the society you live in and as such your "spirituality" is superficial. That's not a condemnation of all neopaganism (in fact the original writings of Eric Gardiner are fairly profound) but a condemnation of your own interpretation of it.

Vikingr is the noun, Viking is the verb roughly meaning "to go on a journey with intentions of raiding." Any group of people in Germanic and Scandinavian lands could go "a viking" if the need/desire arose. The moment of your death was supposedly predetermined, but not the way in which you died.

@Hobarth McShane so you know that song too! Anyway...there are a lot of people who seem to forget about the long history of interaction between Northern Europe and the Middle East, which was usually (but not always) peaceful and beneficial to both. Every time a European goes to a coffee shop he or she is enjoying something we borrowed from Middle Eastern culture and Middle Eastern people are usually quite eager to adopt Western ways too. It's only a few assholes on both sides who don't see the benefits of this.

I would like to remind everyone that this is modern music with a norse theme, so quit hailing Odin and yammering about your Nordic roots. Speaking as a person who actually has Norse (or more precisely Norman French, Scottish, and English from the Danegeld ) I would like to point out that in many cases the Norse became Christian of their own free will and that there was a period of time in which the two religions coexistence in relative peace...in fact many of the most illustrious figures in the Icelandic sagas including Leif Ericsson were Christian and other norse men became wealthy serving the Byzantine empire...they are part of the Norse legacy too!

Music like this reminds people of their Germanic roots and their rich cultural heritage. It reminds people of a time, long before the influence of Christianity and its devastating effects on the souls of the folk. Nobody back then adapted Christianity out of their own free will. Converting to Christianity was always out of fear or by force. Either out of fear from "Hell" or being punished by the Church. Almost everybody from the Germanic world, who opens theirselfs to this music, can feel a deep connection to something old and long forgotten awakening.
@sarahgray430
@sarahgray430 5 жыл бұрын
@@nuclearping um hello...this music is entirely modern even if it has a Norse theme. You have about as much chance of connecting to your "roots" by listening to Wagner as you do to this...and if you actually read the Norse sagas and the Eddas you will find that THEY were the ones who feared going to Hell. It was only in later centuries that people got Hell confused with Sheol (which is the correct name of where the unbelievers go in Christian cosmology) and really...most people who maunder about returning to the "old ways" probably would not survive for very long living at an 18th century level of technology let alone a 9th century level. I mean seriously...thank whatever gods you like for the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution because you wouldn't be able to sit around listening to music and texting about the "old gods" or the "old ways" if you lived back in the old days!
@nuclearping
@nuclearping 5 жыл бұрын
By the superficial way of your response, you clearly didn't understand even a bit of what I was talking about. Of course it is "modern music", nowhere I said it wasn't. Neither did I say anything about "old golds" or "old ways". Reconnecting yourself with your cultural heritage has nothing to do with returning to a "18th / 9th century live style". Also "Hel(heim)" isn't the same as "Hell". Seriously, get your self together.
@sarahgray430
@sarahgray430 5 жыл бұрын
@@nuclearping the point that I was making is that much of what many people believe about Norse society and history is based on fantasy rather than fact and that it is pointless to look upon pre Christian Europe as some sort of Golden Age.
