Arundhati Roy was speaking after receiving the third P.Govinda Pillai memorial national award instituted by the PG Samskrithi Kendram to perpetuate the memory of Marxist ideologue P. Govinda Pillai here on Wednesday.
Stressing the need to work together to thwart the designs of political annihilations, she said the proposed delimitation exercise in 2026 is likely to disempower all of South India by reducing the number of MPs to be sent to Parliament.
“The delimitation is not the only threat people face now. Federalism, the lifeblood of our diverse country, is also under a serious threat. The elected Chief Ministers of the opposition-ruled states have to literally beg to get their due share from the Centre. The latest blow to the federalism of the country is the recent Supreme Court verdict upholding the striking down of Article 370, special status given to Jammu and Kashmir. This is not the issue of Kashmir alone; it affects the fundamental structure of our polity, said Ms. Roy.

The country has lost the moral conscience to speak against heinous crimes as crimes like genocide and ethnic cleansing is now greeted with applause and political rewards. On the other hand, wealth is being concentrated into fewer and fewer hands, impoverishing the poor further. The most bewildering conundrum of our times is that in all of the world, people seem to be voting to disempower themselves. The fact is that who controls technology controls the world, said Ms. Roy, while exuding hope that the new generation will ultimately rise to the occasion to save the country.
Expressing shame on the silence of the country in the ongoing genocide in Gaza, she said that all over the world, millions of people, including Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, Communists, and so on, are holding marches calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
“But our country, which once was a true friend of colonised people, is silent today. Most of the public intellectuals and writers, all but a very few, are also silent today,” she rued, while stating that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the siege of Gaza is a crime against humanity.

I have always been a fan of Arundhati Roy, primarily as a reader. I think she is one of the finest writers of English today. I also think that her fiction conveys more insights into human nature and circumstance than her political essays, which I think are simplistic despite their sweeping reach. As such I have more faith in her as a novelist than as a political analyst. For certain she has a large heart and is capable of empathy in a way few can. But the problem with Marxist thinkers is that they divide the whole world into just two camps - the oppressors and the oppressed, the topdog and the underdog. They believe that by leveling the field for all society will function better. While this makes for seemingly easy diagnosis of various social and political problems it leaves out the nuances and variables in human thought and action which is where life is actually lived, not as the textbooks describe it. While her unflagging support for Kashmir is admirable, has she ever considered fully the insidious role of terrorism in this region aided by a perpetually hostile neighbor across our border? We have never heard her say anything at all about the reasons for the exodus of the Kashmiri pundit community from their homeland. Has she given due weight to the violence inherent in Islamic political ideology that drive many of these conflicts around the world? Is she aware of the growth of Islamist separatist groups in her own home state of Kerala and the tensions it is causing within both the Hindu and Christian communities there? These micro events fly under the radar of most leftist ideologues. Even when they do confront them, these anomalies do not become a weighty discussion point in their circles as they don’t square with their larger picture of how life ought to be, not how it actually is. As a citizen of India who is conservative in values yet with secular and liberal leanings, I am happy that the BJP is in power today despite their many (vaunted) trespasses and transgressions against democracy. The country is the better for it in many ways if not all. Like all political dispensations they serve some more than others. Most importantly they are the only ones who have forced us to (re) think what it means to be Indian, a mixed identity that we have carried as a people and nation and taken for granted for so long without attempting to understand what it really is.
