I vividly remember my uncle buying me a miniature version of the Planet of the apes treehouse. Looked just like the regular scale, but everything was of molded plastic as I recall. I still got the mego treehouse for Christmas. That would have been $70 in todays money. But what a great Christmas gift it was.

I really ape-preciated this playset as a kid!

I never seen this toy as a kid but I do remember that a local bakery did use the figures as themed birthday cake toppers.

Big ol' flashback here! I had a dinosaur set that featured the mountain with cave and rocks seen to the right of the tree bridge at the 5:56 mark. If I remember correctly, the bags that they sold the sets on dinosaurs in had a vinyl feel to them. This was great because you could store them in there after playing. So good. Thanks, Brian.

Glitch969, I remember that too! I also recall some huge set in the Sears catalog that came with dinosaurs and cavemen.

I didn't have these particular sets, but toy soldier style toys were a staple of my childhood. Besides dinosaurs, cowboys and astronauts I had the Star Patrol/Galaxy Laser Team, the Ideal Justice League and HG Toys Buck Rogers and Godzilla vs Tricephalon sets. Great stuff.

I would have loved to have this back then and I would love to have this now. I did have the Lone Ranger playset sometime in 1972 or 1973. Never saw the POTA set until it appeared in the Sears or J.C. Penney Christmas catalog. By then I have moved away from toy soldiers and cowboys & Indians to Megos. But still...

I don't know if these were available in Canada when I was a kid, but if they were I would have demanded all of them. Army men were a staple of my playtime and Planet of the Apes was my favorite film series. If I could have only gotten hold of these I know my childhood would have had many ape vs human soldier battles. I kind of wish stuff like this still came out as army men was something my own son missed out on when he was young.

I managed to find pieces of these sets in eBay “toy lots” about 20 years ago. These were auctions of random toy parts that were of no use to the seller. I managed to piece together one of the basic quick-sell sets. Great stuff!

Not sure if you have one but I would love it if you did a episode on multiple King Kong set. I love the 60’s cartoon Kong and the sets come up on eBay but I have no idea how close any of them are to complete.

Great video!!! I would be interested in seeing more about generic army men sets. I have not seen anyone on youtube really cover the subject, like how many different poses were there and how many different armies and where did the original molds come from?

I am from Mexico, and back in the 70s I had as a gift a Tarzan playset made by the no longer existing Toy factory "Jugarama", the funny thing is that the exact same hanging foot bridge and the plastic green tree found in the planet of the apes, came aswell in my Tarzan set, I believe some of the toy molds used in american toy factories back in the 70s were sold to mexican toy corporations...
@BrickMantooth4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there definitely was lots of that going on. I would love to see that Tarzan set BTW. Big fan.

i wonder if the inclusion of the Jeep is because of how Apes drove around in Jeeps and Trucks in the Return to the Planet of the Apes cartoon in 1975?
@BrickMantooth4 жыл бұрын
I think Battle for the Planet of the Apes was the catalyst here. A lot of the merchandise seems to be based on that particular movie. Even Mego's treehouse was clearly inspired by this.

Was the KUNG FU set actually licensed by Warner Brothers?

It is not, I wonder if it's because the show was cancelled and they just figured they could get away with it. There is no denying what it's based on.
