Revisiting this, because the chimey high e string is just forever killing me. I noticed something this time: You explain the muting as judo-choppig the bridge and show the edge of your hand parallel to the bridge, which make sense intellectually. So I kept trying that. Took me a few *cough* years *cough* to notice that you then angle your hand pretty strongly. The top part of your hand is by the bridge, but the tips of your fingers far enough forward to be over the soundhole. I also wonder if I have my hand too high overall. I still haven't found a position that gives me sound you get. I wonder if you could do a YT short about it? Maybe Sweetwater can give you a camera you can put inside the guitar? Anyway... always grateful for your excellent and useful videos!
@skeller19884 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this video Sean. Can you give some details on the mechanics of your index finger? Specifically, is it straight or curved, and does that change from upstroke to downstroke? It would also be helpful to hear about the pick angle you're using. It's hard to tell from the video. One discussion board I found says to keep the pick at a 90 degree angle to the ground to make the transition from down to upstroke easier. But that makes it harder to hit all the strings cleanly. Thanks!

Your karate-chop analogy really helped. The term "Palm" muting is kind of confusing since the mouse of the hand has nothing to do with the muting.

@seandaniel237 жыл бұрын
It's definitely easier with a pick BUT you can also do it using your index fingernail or the flesh of your thumb, it just won't he quite as loud with your thumb, but palm-wise all the same stuff still applies.

Kinda like a taco from the food truck in Ybor--not bad going down but that rebound... Take a look at how worn your strings are over the sound hole where you strum-they be deeeaaad But seriously folks-- good lesson- I know I struggled with palm muting until I realized you needed to move the heel of your hand around to optimize the string pairs you wanted to emphasize When i have given slide guitar lessons its the hardest thing to get across to students because without good muting you will get a mess of overtones in open tunings. To tie into another video of yours- Duane Allman was one of the best at articulating just the notes he needed. There is not much video of Duane but I have watched this a bunch of times and found it really helpful ( about 1 minute mark kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5SkoZtjhdZ9hpI
