Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) for neuropathic pain in dogs and cats

#Palmitoylethanolamide (#PEA) is an endocannabinoid-like compound found in several food sources which in rodent models has been shown to reduce neuro-inflammation, be neuroprotective and have analgesic properties. If it worked then it would be a useful add therapy and perhaps allow a dose reduction in #neuropathic_pain pain drugs. However the rodent model studies (where the compound is often administered intraperitoneally) has yet to be translated into vigorous unbiased clinical trials in dogs and cats. Be careful of the hype because it has poor oral bioavailability and evidence that a particular product works if often based on anecdote. Micronized -palmitoylethanolamide (#micro-PEA or #mPEA) and ultra micronized PEA (um-PEA) has better bioavailability. Make sure you check if the source is #sustainable because often manufactured from palm oil.
