What makes this really hard for me to take this controversy seriously is that people only went in discourse after the fact that the game was accused for ALLEGEDLY using AI art. I find the discourse funny and sad. On one hand, its hilarious watching people have a meltdown and beg Nintendo to sue Pocket Pair and failing to understand if Nintendo could they already would have when the game was initially announced. Its why that one guy who was going to make a Pokemon mod for Palworld was instantly struck down by Nintendo (I also heard he was trying to get people to pay for said mod, but I didn't look into it personally). On the other hand, its sad that people are so desperate to defend a massive corporation just because they are addicted to specific franchises they own. For example, I love Capcom games, but I cannot in good faith defend them adding DRM to older titles that only effect paying customers when said DRM doesn't even stop pirates, cheaters, or modding. For the pokemon fanatics losing it over Palworld, Gamefreak and Nintendo could take a dump in their mouths and they'd ask for more with a smile. For the AI angle, they don't even have any proof AI was used and just assume so because they really want a reason to hate the game. Its a fun game, and the fact that it just came out in Early Access means it will (hopefully) only improve from here on out. I'm usually not a fan of survival crafting games, but I've been enjoying my time with the game personally.

I think the real fucking grim thing about all of this is that this discourse has revealed to everyone that AI will take over video games. This discourse has gotten everyone exclaiming that they don't know if it's AI but they wouldn't even care if it was. People are explicitly stating this. People have such a low opinion of their own hobby that they are saying this stuff. People have been trying to put AI into movies and TV shows but have received immense push back. Little did they know that what they really needed was a field like gaming where the fans have such little respect for the craft that they wouldn't just not care about AI, but even fight on its behalf because it makes them feel bad when someone points out that it's unethical. To clarify, I'm not blaming Palworld, cause this doesn't have to do with Palworld, this has to do with what people are saying about it. Because people aren't just saying that the claims are false or unsubstantiated. They're saying that it wouldn't even matter to them if the claims were true. It is now only a matter of time before all developers realise they can just freely replace any part of development with AI and have a horde of gamers throwing a baby rage tantrum on their behalf when someone points out that it's AI. Gamers are actively screaming and explicitly stating to everyone that their hobby is pure slop, so we're gonna get more and more games by devs who have picked up on this fact. We even got a very popular FPS this year with AI voice acting. We're gonna get games with AI art, AI designs, AI music, hell, we could even get games with AI stories. The future's gonna be great, guys!

As much as I love the game, People are right to call out plagiarism, to my knowledge the developers never explicitly claimed parody, which is probably a huge area of attack legally and morally speaking. It's not a problem if it happens to a brand that everyone knows, like Pokémon, but people are seeing this and worry that next time they (or another company inspired by Palworlds huge success) might be parodying/plagiarising something that isn't as inherently popular. Instead of the designs being ripoffs being an open secret, I'd much rather they officially come out and own up to what they did by directly claiming parody.

They modeled them after pokemon, they didn't steal the assets outright. While their shape was similar, the models used different meshes from the pokemon that they resembled, proving that it was made from scratch despite the extreme similarities. I don't disagree though, it still doesn't change the fact that it feels like they're tracing, which is kinda scummy even if it's supposed to be a parody. I feel like they should've just tried to make all the pals have pokemon-like designs, instead of taking bits and pieces from different mons and slapping them together. I know it's supposed to be a parody, but I feel like they're trying to recreate some pokemon as much as they're legally able to. At least a few of them have slightly more original designs instead of all of them looking like bootleg versions. The chicken is nice

@Xenonfuji the shape is extremely similar, but the mesh's topology looks different, several of the model's loop cuts are stretched further apart and some parts on the hair are ever-so-slightly wider. They tried to recreate primarina's hair, but they didn't import the model directly. Thing is, you could argue "derivative slop game" also applies to the latest Pokemon games too.
