I would very much like to see your side-by-side comparison of the Holbein and Brutfuner Macaron Pastel pencils. I've had my Holbein 150 set for a few years. Your box looks nice. I would love to know where it came from since it is not on the Amazon Japan website and the Blick website still shows the old box. I treasure mine and they are the best set. I also own Luminance, Polycromos, Supracolor and Prismacolor. Each is very nice in its own way, but Holbein is still the best. Whoever sent these to you is incredibly generous because Holbeins are very expensive. BTW, the Brutfuner 50 are an exact dupe, not the Brutfuner 80.

I'm pretty positive that Holbein uses the same pigment providers for their pencils that they get for their paints. As a pigment nerd watercolor artist who had done my own lightfast testing on watercolor, and pigment study for many years, if Holbein says its lightfast, its lightfast! I have some and the exact same names are used on their watercolor tubes, with those tubes show you the actually pigments used. The same pigments used in any other artist grade brand of paint . So I find myself shaking my head and laughing over color pencil snobs putting Holbein pencils down. Holbein is a very reputable company in the art community for their paint. Their standards are very high. So I expect no less for their pencils.

Hi Jessica, yes I thought this had been addressed and the company responded. They were in question for a while. I can't remember which artist on KZbin, but I watched a video not too long ago where it was mentioned that this was fixed. Inside the box, the paper you see me show at the beginning explains how they lightfast test their pencils and the rating on each pencil. The only ones that are known to be Fugitive colors are the neon colors.

In Canada, my art store Delta Art and Drafting Supplies in Edmonton, Alberta offers all the different sets and open-stock Holbein pencils. Also, there is an OMS just for the Holbein pencils called Meltz. It is different than your OMS as it changes these pencils into a type of watercolor pencil. The Meltz makes the pencil kind of runny so you get that watercolor effect.

I can totally relate, I was so excited and happy when I got my 100 Caran d'ache luminance pencils. I almost cried too. They just feel so heavenly and creamy. I'll definitely be adding those gorgeous holbiens to my wish list XD. Although I do feel a bit concerned about those whites I might avoid using them just because of that warning and I don't even know how to sharpen with a knife... sounds very dangerous. But I'm 100% buying those XD I'll use all the colours except for the white until I figure out how to sharpen it safely. I feel excited now thank u for sharing!
@raggedblossom5082 жыл бұрын
I think the warning is mainly about ingesting the lead, ie, chewing the end of your pencil. (But who would do that to Holbeins?) The company is just protecting itself and exercising duty of care. Even so, I'd keep it well away from small children.

Sharpening with a knife is easy tbh! Just hold your knife near the end of the wood (where the colour part of the pencil stops and the wood starts, and slide the knife away from yourself, towards the tip, pressing down a little (blade almost flat to the pencil, and blade facing away from you). Your fingers holding the pencil aren't near the blade. Just takes a little practice. Turn the pencil after each slice of the blade. You can use a cheap graphite pencil to practice, if you need to! You might find a video on YT of someone doing it.

The White pencil warning could be from the titanium Dioxide they use as a pigment maybe? But I'd imagine that all TiO2 white and pastel shades even would contain that same pigment to make it white, so maybe it's the paint they use on the barrel of the pencil? That's so strange. I'm going to have to google this now lol. Anyways, I love your review of these, definitely the best one I've seen on Holbein. And What a truly beautiful and deserving gift someone sent you too.

It's important to swatch out your colors so that you can put them together to come up with color combinations and make a plan for your drawings or coloring pages. @aliceb51272 жыл бұрын
While the 150 set has every pencil of every color the 100 set does have some of the pastels but not all of them so if you are wondering if buying the 100 set and the 50 pastels equals the 150 set the answer is no, you will get doubles of some of the pastels and none of some of the other colors. I Think Dick Blick shows what colors are in each of the sets that may make it easier to decide if you should get the 100 set and just order any missing colors open stock.

Or is it more if you were to put the pencil in your mouth and chew on it that’s when it’s dangerous? Very curious. I’ve never heard of colored pencils having a cancer warning before.😅

There is no pencil on the market I hate as much as these, and price has nothing to do with it. They just aren't good pencils in a number of ways. I'd almost rathe have Crayola, and I would rather have several Chinese brands. On top of being just bad, they're highly toxic and not nearly as lightfast as the company has claimed, so keep away from children, pets, pencil biters, and sunlight. I think a lot of people buy these pencils, and are then embarrassed to say how bad they are compared to other brands because they don't want to admit paying so much for poor quality pencils.
