I lost my central unit a few months ago and to replace it was over $6,000.00! So far this new Carrier has been much quieter, more efficient and cheaper to operate. The old Tempstar lasted for twenty five years so I guess I can't complain about it dying.

When I was a kid my room had a large window fan always on exhaust. Having it blow out rather than in helped my parents, but not me. My bedroom was ungodly hot in the summer. The main saving grace is that where I live is just not as hot as Mississippi and the summer is shorter where I lived, which is Philadelphia, PA.

When I was a kid, our Chevy Impala had four-fifty five air conditioning. Four windows fully opened and the car going down the road at fifty five miles per hour. Our home was one of those 1960’s split level ranch houses where all the summer heat was directed directly to my bedroom. A huge steel box fan with heavy drive belts turned them airplane capable metal blades to push the hot, humid air towards my bedroom. My parents got the cooler fresh outside air and I got the stahl hot air that got sucked out of my parents bedroom. Lucky me!

R 22 and R 12 have a significantly higher cooling capacity to newer freons. They also require mineral oil. The newer ones use PAG. I have a fridgidaire window unit that will cool up to about 90- degrees then can't cool. I assume low freon. But they are unrepairable basically. I bought a new GE for $99.00. Would like to fix the old one but R22 being $500 or more makes that pointless. Shango used propane in his truck. Much respect.

@@jagmarc Well Shango66 has an old vid where he overhauled his truck AC apparently using propane from his barbeque. I messaged him 5 years afterwards and he said it was working no problem. The new window air conditioners have styrofoam inside and they end up with black mold, because the moisture can't drain like old window units.
@eeengineer8851 Жыл бұрын
They don't have a drain on the idea that the water gets in the fan and splashes onto the evaporator. Supposed to improve the efficiency or power use. The last 2 window units I have bought got a drain drilled in them as yes it turns into a moldy dead skeeter stew.

Best thing to do is when you are ready to shut down is to either turn the thermostat up a few degrees or set it to "fan" and let the fan run a couple minutes before turning it off. Helps to dry out the insides.

Living in Phoenix, I run my AC a lot. Hopefully your unit just as a bad run capacitor. I've got to change mine about every year. AC units are another victim of green mania. I do not buy whatsoever that the new units are more efficient. They use a worse refrigerant. The best refrigerants have been banned. The heat exchangers are aluminum rather than copper. AC motors have been a mature technology for many decades. Even if they are more efficient, it's probably by a barely measurable amount and is offset by being of such lower quality that you will go through 3 of them in the time the old one would have lasted. Plus the old one was made here and did not take a months long party cruise from China to the US consuming 150 tons of bunker fuel a day.

I have a 3-ton and a 2.5-ton from 2015. My electric bill is the same or less than folks I know with smaller houses and units installed in 2005-07 (after Katrina.) And those ran cheaper than the 80s and 90s units that went down in the flood.
@tarstarkusz Жыл бұрын
@@audubon5425 I don't believe these wild claims. Where is the increase in efficiency coming from? There is only a few places it came be coming from. More efficient refrigerant. More efficient compressor motor or more efficient fan motors. Maybe an algo can make it slightly more efficient, but not by much. I see bold claims, never the methodology, never anything specific. Also, there are NEVER any adjustments for lower physical build quality. In fact, I think if they are more efficient, this is where it is coming from. Like it takes less energy to run a physically smaller and lighter compressor. Same with the fan.
@audubon5425 Жыл бұрын
@tarstarkusz I'm not going to do research for you, and you can believe what you want, but I'm not making wild claims - these are personal observations between myself and family & friends. Radiotvphononut keeps his house at 80 and his bill is comparable to mine at 73. I have 700 more s.f. and two units. We are about 150 miles apart - same climate.
@tarstarkusz Жыл бұрын
@@audubon5425 Do you believe this is a valid experiment? You and your buddies checking electric bills? You are making the claim, not me. WHERE is this increased efficiency coming from? You ENTIRELY ignore the build quality issue. If you have to replace something 3 times in the space of something else, that's a lot more energy. I myself was forced to replace a 70s era air conditioner in like 2014. It was a GE air condition and heater. 220v I think like 15-20kbtu. It worked well. It was replaced with a Frigidaire from the same year (IIRC, 2014). It stopped working 5 years and like a month after it was installed (it had a 5 year warranty). The worst part was what broke is not the air conditioner, but the circuit board that controls it. When you turned it on, it just ran at full blast non-stop. The circuit that monitored the temp is what stopped working., No new parts were available. I did not notice any decrease in my year over year power consumption when it was still working.
@rogersmith7396 Жыл бұрын
Right about the shipping. Hopefully the heat exchangers are larger. My Jeep uses Y1234. Does OK. My 70 Cadillac still running on R 12. Refrigeration uses all different pressures which are matched to the freon. Very complicated subject .Propane may be coming on line soon.

So I may be in the minority here I gave up cable along time ago but I just don't enjoy antenna DTV. So what I've been doing is I've got this T-Mobile home internet and it works pretty fine and I have a Roku and there is a way that you can convert it and hook it to an old crt using an HDMI to composite. And I find a lot of the times I'm having to run it at 480p because Internet isn't all that great but it's cheap. So for me personally watching it at 480p one of these big flat screens sucks. So it's nice to have an old CRT because 480p looks nice on it. Mainly watch KZbin videos anyways. So that's an advantage of having a CRT. I've got one of those 2004 Sony Trinitron. Flat panel but still CRT though.
