Thought i would try to do some night time lapse on the panasonic G85 with the the 15mm Lieca Summilux lens.
For a first attempt i think it was pretty decent, Will try some other settings next time i have the opportunity!

This is a fantastic video. I didn't know you could get such beautiful night shots with the g85. I was thinking I'd have to upgrade to a full frame to get that quality. What kind of lenses do you recommend for this type of time-lapse? Could it be done on an old Canon FD 50mm lens f1.8

Thank you for the tutorial... Have you done a time-lapse where it goes from night to day or vice versa? Wouldn't the settings for night exposure would mess the daylight portion? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

5:02 i think you should enable long shutter noise removal to remove those rgb dots it will take as long as your shutter speed, ex: 20s shutter then 20s noise removal totaling 40s but you can move it after the shutter finished ie it is only processing the picture and the shutter curtain will be closed

Medokn I'm going to try the long shutter noise reduction but don't like the fact it takes as long as the original exposure time. I did get a lot of hot pixels at 20 second exposures. Less at 15 and none at 10. But if lsnr can correct the hot pixels might be worth doing as it might save time in post. Thanks for watching.

Halfway There how long of an exposure are you doing? Is it just running out of power? Iknow at 20 second exposure i only get about 300 or so shots before the battery dies... so any longer and its goibg to use more battery power. I have never had it stop early though...

Brilliant video Thank you, quick question, so we I set my shutter speed to 20 seconds and I choose my intervals for 20s and choose 240 frames. The camera will only produce 120 stills instead of 240, any ideas why?
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 4 жыл бұрын
The interval should be 1 or 2 seconds longer than the shutter speed so that the camera can process the exposure, if you also have noise reduction on then you need to set your interval to twice as long plus a second or two.

@@havinfun4014 Thank you. That makes sense, one last question. Does long noise reduction truly help or can one live without it?
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 4 жыл бұрын
@@crisvega7588 it helps if you don't want to do a lot of post processing... But I don't use it because really all it is doing is removing the hot pixels, you can't miss them especially on a g85 at 20 seconds... And you get a lot of hot pixels, and they do make the image useless but there are ways to make the image ok with post processing... I find the sensor temp makes a difference... If you go out and shoot one image, you take it back to your computer and check the image, couple of hot pixels but not bad... Then you do a 240 exposure time-lapse and get the images back only to see a lot of red green black and white dots.... Can be frustrating. But it is possible. Just need to find the right balance between shutter speed and quality.

Mat_VideoProductions I have looked into this as well. I found this www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01N9N57PQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1504453566&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=panasonic+g85+battery+adapter&dpPl=1&dpID=519NXulRD%2BL&ref=plSrch which is like a dummy battery. But this is for direct connection to a wall. But could likely hack this to run off a power bank. I think you need 9v though... so a power bank that only charges with usb connections will likely only output 5v.

my camera is somehow blocked on 1 sec exposure when i have the manual setting, do you know how to unblock in the menu, and the noise reducing funcion also?
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, lets take care of the 1 second issue first. Press the FN3 button on the "D" pad. Its the bottom button just below the menu button. This is the option to turn make the camera silent, so you don't hear any beeps. if this is set to on, for some weird reason it limits the exposure time. Makes zero sense to me why, but setting that to off SHOULD fix the 1 second exposure issue. Next. For the long shutter noise reduction, Press the middle button on the "D" pad, this is the Menu button, then on the left side of the screen, select the "Camera" Icon, on the right hand side scroll down to page 6 and you will see the Long Shtr NR option, set that to off and that post processing won't start. hope that helps!

Tried shooting a time lapse tonight. I also have a g85. My settings were 4 sec exposures at iso 800 with the 15 mm lens at f1.7 (started about 25 minutes after sundown so still a little light out) . When I loaded the images into lightroom I couldn't believe how much noise was in these shots. They are virtually unusable. Then I come home and see a video of you dialing in 20 secs at iso 1600! You think it might be my specific sensor gone bad or are you doing magic noise reduction in post? When shooting time lapses I turn off the in camera noise reduction setting, and of course I expect noise, but not this much at 4 secs. Whats been your experience with noise on the g85?
@havinfun4014

me too, i know g85 can shoot at iso 25600 but you will get crazy noise, so i set to iso1250 and 10sec, but i still can't see any stars in my captures, even the skies so clean and shoot at raw, what i get is just crazy hot pixels, then i change to 30sec shutter, the hot pixels is getting crazier especially the green dot one~ any suggestion?
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 6 жыл бұрын
AmieW maybe try the pixel refresh option in the menu. In the setup menu. Page 5. I definately dont have the issues you describe. The longer the exposure i get more... the higher the iso it just gets a bit more grainy. The LSNR option basically takes a photo with the shutter closed right after your exposure... then it maps the hot pixels back to your exposure and erases them... there are some decent post processing techniques using photoshop and batch export...
@AmieW
@AmieW 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reply, i heard most of panasonic camera had this issue so bad even in Lumix G9, and the one who safe from hot pixels are GH3, GH4, GH5 and GX8. Then what i'm thinking right now is, is that bad if i do pixel refresh too much? BTW i heard those hot pixels issue from this forum www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4180016
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 6 жыл бұрын
AmieW I also have a GH5 and the sensor is WAY better! BUT... its much more money. I still really like the G85, especially for the price point. Not sure if the pixel refresh needs to be done more than once. Only when you have pixel problems. Which if your getting excessive hot pixels then maybe worth a shot. You could send me a frame of what you shot....

@@havinfun4014 Awesome. Thank you for the fast response. Now i did try making a time lapse in October when I was in joshua tree CA. I did the same times for my shots. I found that using a 20sec interval and a 20 second exposure I wasn't actually getting 3 pics a minute. I was getting a lot less due to the interval timer starting after the noise reduction of the exposure.
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 4 жыл бұрын
@@treksandpreps if you use the noise reduction feature on the camera, and your exposure time is 20 seconds, then you need to set the interval to like 41 or 42 seconds. Since the noise reduction is just taking another exposure with the shutter closed and then overlaying that exposure over the original and deleting the hot pixels... That will also burn through the battery much faster than not using long shutter noise reduction.
@rjkral
@rjkral 4 жыл бұрын
Trying this out, but running into an issue with the internal timelapse feature: it seems the interval set maybe uses the clock to fire the shutter? Instead of firing the new shot AFTER the previous shot is complete, it wants to fire strictly every 20 seconds. If the shutter is still open from previous firing, it stops the sequence and won’t continue to take the rest of the shots. Is there a way to force it to time the next shot AFTER the previous shot instead?!
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 4 жыл бұрын
If your exposure time is 20 seconds, you need to ensure that your shooting interval is a couple seconds longer, you also need to set the image count... It should not just stop the time-lapse, if your interval is the same as the exposure time, you may lose a frame or 2 while the camera is processing.
@rjkral
@rjkral 4 жыл бұрын
Havin'Fun yes that works say if I do a test of 4 shots 22 second interval 20 sec exposure. I’ll test further but I think that interval in the real world will get shorter and shorter. When noise reduction option is added, because the camera is busy (while a real clock is ticking away the time) applying the NR for 20 seconds, the camera instead of taking four shots only ends up taking ONE and then is “finished”.
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 4 жыл бұрын
@@rjkral Yes, if you use the noise reduction you will lose even more frames... 20 seconds for exposure and an additional 20 seconds for the noise reduction... Plus 1 or 2 seconds for processing and saving the image.
@rjkral
@rjkral 4 жыл бұрын
Havin'Fun thanks for the fast replies! Ok I think I get it. Just wish there were an option to set the interval to mean the time between completed shots instead of the he clock. I wonder if external intervalometers might do this. Thanks again. Ps also the problem may be far less noticeable if setting 100s of shots in the counter rather than my tests of say 20 or so:)
@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 4 жыл бұрын
@@rjkral correct, a couple dropped frames due to the count is no biggie. I can't remember for sure without testing but I think the dropped frames mess up the file naming though... Drove me nuts importing into premiere because it imports in order and will stop when the count has a gap... 1,2,3,4,5,7,8 so it would only bring in the 1 to 5 and I'd have to bring in the next run seperate... I just can't remember if it's because of the timing or because of when the camera makes a new folder during the time-lapse and the numbers get bumped by 1.... Could be both scenarios 😁

as far as I know it doesn't matter. The next shot takes place immediately after. I used to set it to 21 seconds, but didn't seem to make a difference, just a 1 second pause in between pictures... I just did a quick test, set shutter speed to 1 second and time lapse interval to 1 seconds. You lose 1 frame per picture, so you should set your time lapse interval to 1 second longer than your shutter speed. I did a quick calculation and I think for the 20 seconds shutter speed and 20 second time lapse, I am losing 1 frame every 20 shots. I never really noticed because my battery was always dead so my actual picture count never equaled my image count. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

@havinfun4014
@havinfun4014 5 жыл бұрын
You did not do anything wrong, a timelapse is just a collection of stills, so you can do one of 2 things with it, you can use create the time lapse with a third party program (I use adobe premiere), or you can process it in the camera, so you could put the sd card back in your camera, turn it on, press the menu button and go to "playback", locate the time lapse video option (Page 3/5) and then you should see your in camera time-lapse video there, you will be able to create an in camera video file at whatever framerate you want. Typically when your time lapse ends it will ask you if you want to create the video file, but sometimes when the time lapse ends while you are away from the camera it will not, the menu will allow you to complete that process.
