Nice video. I think the S1 is a better buy over the GH5. Yes it’s a bit bigger but the advantages are huge. It’s a 4K low light monster with solid codecs and great ibis. It’s ridiculous to write this camera off because of a 4K 60 crop. First it crops to a size larger than an Ari Alexa. Secondly it’s only on 60fps. Sure the GH5 doesn’t do this but the sensor is already tiny.
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
That depends on how much you shoot in 4K 60p, some of the filmmakers shoot most of the footage in 4K 60p. At the moment, there aren't any lenses that would compensate for that crop, expect for Leica options. M43 is definitely not a tiny sensor. Most TV productions are still using cameras with much smaller 1" sensor.

Hi there, thanks again for your great reviews. Always looking forward to them. But I have noticed that you keep mentioning Panasonic as a pioneer of IBIS, but this is incorrect: Minolta/Sony, Olympus, and Pentax are the pioneers, with Minolta being the first to have it and Olympus pushing it to 5-axis. Panasonic didn't have any IBIS until the GX8 and only reached/surpassed Olympus' implementation with the GH5/G9. Thanks again for your content, looking forward to the next video! :)

The GH5 (original) has 5K Open Gate 10-Bit. That sealed the deal for me. Slapped a Metabones XL on those puppies (which makes my 1.4 Aperture lenses 0.8, 2.8 lenses 1.8, and my 4.0 lenses 2.5) so I’m not stressing over low light. Plus if your going for the film look, I only take it up to 800 ISO (1250 if I’m really in a bind). Anything else takes away from the film look and starts looking like video IMHO).

Nice review. Somewhere along the line I would ask that you include pricing for each system that you review. There is a considerable leap in price going to an S1 type of system with L lens etc. Also, by now GH5 should be available in good condition on the used market as well at a considerable savings. What amazes me is that even after all the hoopla over FF offerings over the last year, there are many many people out there that still shoot video with GH5. This could have been a much longer review, given all the variables involved. I hope you do a "GH6 Features List" as is suggested below. Appreciate your work. I was hoping that you would compare it with Fujifilm XT-3 too, because I am totally sold on XT-3 + 16-55 f/2.8 lens, as for that price, you only get a GH5S with a 25mm f/1.7 lens, and you can go lower than that if you choose to go for 18-55 f/2.8-4 Fuji Kit lens. It is a better stills camera, and I checked the video samples on DP review, its 4K 30p is sharper than GH5S, and 4K 60p with a slight crop is also as sharp, if not a bit sharper than GH5S, its only beaten by a small margin by Sony A7III, and the autofocus + face detection works very well, and I think that it even performs close to a GH5S in low light and lastly APS-C sensor, Eterna, and overall aesthetic is much cooler. The only downside is 30 min recording limitation, and lack of 10 bit 4:2:2 (which it offers externally, and internal is 10 bit 4:2:0), so I don't think that a lot of people will miss that. The lack of flippy screen is the biggest compromise for me though. So unless you really want the stabilization and 10 bit 4:2:2 internal, unlimited recording, or flippy screen, I don't see a reason to go for GH5 when XT3 can be had for a lower price, and the GH5S seems even less competitive at 1.6x the price tag.

Did you compare GH5 vs XT3?... I`m between those two cameras and i can`t decide yet. I do both, video and photos. Is XT3 better for photography?...Is GH5 better for video??... @TechReflex5 жыл бұрын
@@neoo370 I went with XT 3 because of very good autofocus and face detect, bigger sensor, color science, better priced lenses. GH5 is better if you need IBIS, flippy screen, no record limit, 10 bit 4:2:2 internal (way overkill if you are unsure). It's also much better for photography. GH5 isn't clearly better than XT3 for video, both have their pros and cons, and for most non professionals, I think XT 3 is better.

@waynecake58675 жыл бұрын
I went to Olympus 40-150 f2.8 lens because 35-100 has more vignetting and the 150mm end has much more bokeh and reach. The sharpness of them is almost the same. Recently I use GH5 and Oly 40150 to do deep sky astrophotography, the results are very impressive, insanely sharp wide open, even to sub pixel level. Some people found video micro jetter problem in their 35-100, do some research before you buy. By the way the auto focus with oly 40150 is still very good video tracking OK, shot flying birds stills OK.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this is great camera mate (GH5). I have also used it for a year and half roughly. I have allready experienced muscle fatigue, and camera shake, when using GH5 and sigma art 18-35mm in a small scale corporate shoot, ruining a shot. This makes you think... metabones+EF lens+GH5 could still be lighter then lumix s1 while you are experiencing a simulated sensor between super 35 and full frame. However IBIS and lowlight and better autofocus in S1 and great still photography some people can"t say no to it. Unfortunately. Maybe a shoulder mount would be a wise investment if someone desperately wants that you shoot with lumix S1?

Excellent video! It's a really good thing to do a review that shows how a camera, 2-years old which some people consider an eternity, is completely worthwhile. Some people would say: Well, I can get that Blackmagic Cinema camera for less and it has better functionality. Beginners mostly or ones who just look at price/functionality. Two very different cameras for different people. There is some areas where they can be used together. But when you start using them for their true and intended purposes, the differences become apparent. I think Panasonic was very smart for building a couple of fantastic, professional-level FF mirrorless cameras. While I am very happy with my Panasonic m43 system, I'll be looking into the S1R for potential higher-end fashion and portrait usage. What I've seen so far has been incredibly impressive and think it might knock the Nikon D850 as the best fashion/portrait off the mantle as the best camera for my purposes. Though Nikon did a fantastic job with that camera and it's several years old. It's one of those cameras that will be remembered for years. As I think the Panasonic S1(R) will be as well.... m43 and FF compliment each other very well and there is no need for m43 users to be concerned IMO. The thing is: today the lenses for the S1 are very limited. For someone who wants to buy right now a new Panasonic camera it is very hard to decide. I've been watching every single video on YT of G9/Gh5/S1 comparison. I still don't know if I should go for a gh5 12-60 2.8-4 or speedbooster 18-35 or for a S1 24-105 f/4. I mean the main difference for me would be low light conditions. But is there a big gap between a 24-105 f/4 on a FF and a 18-35 1.8 on a MFT? The price difference is huge as well. Gh5 with 18-35 is around 2300 whereas S1 24-105 is like 3400. Which leave us some money to buy a 100-400. This is a really hard decision knowing that gh5 is a 2 years old body. This leads me to think about getting a A7III 28-75 2.8 Tamron for less money than the S1 starter pack. But I personally don't like Sony user interface!
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
That is difficult question. Personally I wouldn't go with GH5 and 18-35 with adapter. I definitely recommend native lenses like 12-60 a 15mm Leica. If you need low light performance, A7 III and S1 would be better options. A7III has by far the best lens selection with great budget options but S1 is easier to work with, so it really depends on what you prefer.

but what's happening now with M43 now Olympus has sold imaging division?, what future does this leave for M43 development

I don't really know, Panasonic's latest releases were very underwhelming as well, so I am not very optimistic about M43.

FF senors don't necessarily have 'more information' over a crop senor. Mega Pixel is a Mega Pixel. Its the heat they create, and how long can it sustain and dissipates heat that determines what they can do with the processing. If they made FF twice the size to deal with the heat, and put in the the right hardware to process it, then it too could have the same video features found in cameras like the GH5. You know them to be Cinema Cameras. So as tech improves, so to will FF video performance, but ultimately m43 will always have that advantage and will always have features you wont find in the FF DSLR class markets. Long live m43!

It captures more information even if the pixel count is the same, because larger individual pixels can capture more information.

Has Panasonic a production quality problem? On my 5 month young G9 get the rubber on different places loose. I never had this on any brand before. Do you have the same experiances? Greatings from made in China?
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
My G9 is more than a year old, and I don't have such problems, but I have heard others complain about that.

@@TheHybridShooter thank you very much for fast and open feedback. I use my G9 little (2.000 photos) in this time and handle it with kit gloves. Evtl. the glue was out. 😉

My G85 had the same problem with you after a year of use. I think maybe my hands sweat too much.

I had the same problem with my G9. After 6 month the rubber was loose at the sd-card door and the thumbgrip. I´ll sent it to panasonic repair. Had the camera back in about a week with no cost at all. You should get it fixed if the warranty is valid.

@@Thompa74 Hi Thommy, thanks for your replay and exact on the same places got the rubber on my G9 loose. SD Card door at the button und at the back on the thumbrip. Seems like a Quality Problem of Panasonic. I will send it on Monday for repair to panasonic. thx again!

Unfortunately not, A7S III is completely different league.

@@TheHybridShooter I guess so. Difference in price means I could either get a GH5 and a few lenses or save up and get an A7SIII, but I don’t know of the longevity of the MFT system
