Well, on another video, he did say that the GH6 would probably be the last m4/3 panasonic is releasing. From that video, I can see how it could be. Thing is, people are just opting for the sony option and with the a7C body, it can well look like it (if you don't consider price a factor)

If the existence of this mark II isn't a clear sign to you that he was right about MFT being on the way out, you know nothing about economics. This is an obvious attempt at milking a cash cow without investing anything. A clear indication that the product is at the end of its life cycle.

Setting manual exposure as a “one man crew” is not necessarily difficult... you just record a test clip of your exact setup (with yourself in the frame), check it and adjust exposure accordingly, then record a test clip again if needed. Auto exposure is dangerous, as is auto color balance - you don’t want those things changing while you’re recording video!
@robinput6267

Exactly, saying that these fluctuations in auto exposure is an issue is just silly but that's what you get from "vloggers" who can't be bothered to do anything in manual anymore.

A thing I don't quite understand about these camera reviews (not this channel in particular) is the extreme emphasis on video autofocus. I don't know a single working professional (not KZbinr, not vlogger) that works paid jobs with autofocus. I don't think I would ever be confident enough in any (video) autofocusing system to just let it go and not think about it, especially during something high-stakes like a wedding or interview. And even if I was filming myself talking to the camera, I feel like I'd be infinitely more comfortable stopping down my lens (even MFT) a little bit and manually focusing it on one spot. If you're really animated you may drift in and out of focus, but for sitting at a desk? I don't see the point. The risk of the camera just shitting itself and losing focus completely, however small, is always there. I understand these gear reviews are for everybody so obviously vloggers and KZbinrs are going to want to know those specs but I feel like these cameras are always knocked hard for shitty video AF even when everything else is great. People buy these GH cameras for a reason, and I feel like a lot of the people that are going to reach for cameras with features like this aren't going to give a shit about something as imprecise as autofocus.

I bought an A7R4 a while back and the trinity of G masters. The experience yielded the most amazing results BUT over time lugging something like the 70-200 with me got annoying and I started finding renewed interest in my GH5 and the 50-200 (100-400 FF Equivalent) I started to appreciate the compact size of the 8-18 and the 12-60 as well as the powerful IBIS which makes a difference in the low light photography and slower shutter speeds. Especially considering when you have 60MP in the A7R4 it doesn’t do as well in low light anyways. Also the ergonomics of the A7R4 and the lack of a fully articulating screen wasn’t that great as well, the menu system wasn’t too bad, it just was a drag it wasn’t touch screen which slowed down changes on the fly. Again the A7R4 was excellent but it just wasn’t the camera I found myself bringing with me. So the GH5II probably isn’t an upgrade consideration for me but I think the GH6 might be a consideration, especially if there is a megapixel bump and these 10-25 faster lenses I think will be amazing too. I can’t wait for the Gh6

I have been shooting with the GH5 since it came out, and would agree the auto-focus is a major issue with this camera. One of my work arounds in the past year has been to use the Panasonic 4K camcorder. It is a great tool for KZbin/Facebook productions. Especially in a one-shooter scenario. The auto focus has never let me down in critical action shots when things are moving fast. That said I just might give the new version of the Gh5 a try. Great review.

I think it is good to realize what Tony was doing here. He was testing the camera filming as "casually" as he could i.e. leaving it in auto-everything mode, waving it around and seeing how it performed. If that is your way of shooting, than this is a valid review I guess, but I'm pretty certain most users of the GH series of cameras shoot a bit more deliberate. Most camera's perform a lot better if you put just a bit more effort into it. So it is important to first ask yourself what you want your typical shooting style to be, and then pick the camera that performs best with that shooting style. I don't think an Arri Alexa would have done any better when used like this.
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a review for KZbinrs who generally NEED to use automatic settings because they're moving quickly and on-camera. FWIW Arri Alexa would have done way worse. Doesn't even have AF. If you don't need AF or AE, there's A LOT of great cameras that can get the job done even cheaper.

I've always heard that when it comes to shooting quality video... the best auto focus available on any camera is like trying to walk with a rubber crutch. Just use your iPhone or a gopro for vlogging but for shooting any worthwhile footage on a dslr everyone usually agrees that real pros stay on manual focus. Why would anyone use training wheels on a Harley? Most of the really expensive cinema cameras don't even have auto focus. I am sure you guys know all this but it seems like you choose to spend a lot of time regarding a basically trivial concern (auto focus) besides many of today's youtube videos are reaching such a pro level that any unintended random focus hunting looks subpar. I simply wish you had spent less time focusing on "auto focus" in this video and given more attention to comparing the other new attributes of the Gh5 mark 2 with Sony and Canon dslrs near the same price point. I know you touched on a few other things like iso but your brevity on subjects like 10 bit recording make me wonder if you may be Canon or Sony snobs... Ha! Other than that I love you guys and really enjoy your videos! You are great teachers and are really a lot of fun to watch! I have learned a lot of great stuff from you, Thanks!

Love both of your contents and have been following you guys for years. I am happy that you like the new GH5 mark ii but I am getting confused from your reaction. You mentioned there won’t be a future with the m43 system a while ago and if that’s the case, why would you still wholeheartedly recommend a camera system which has no future or have you changed your position or view towards m43 ? As a internet influencer, I really think you need to be responsible for what you have said and if you change your position, you should mention it. It is ok to change your opinion based on circumstances. We all can be wrong? We won’t be mad at you. Olympus did exit the camera industry but they are still here and that 150-400 pro lens is selling faster than they can make it which explains that the demand for m43 equipment is still here. Wouldn’t it too immature to declare this system dead ? Again, love your contents. Not trying to pick fight or anything. Just my observations.
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't changed my predicitions about the future of the M43 system. I still believe it will be a dead-end around 2013. I predicted the release of the GH6, but also predicted that there wouldn't be a GH7. I predicted Olympus exiting the camera business. If you listened to me, you had advanced warning, whether you decided to switch or stay, it's nice to know what's going to happen. Right now this really is the best option at that price point, for people who require video to two card slots and unlimited recording time. If Canon or Sony made something similar, the strength of the platform would probably shift my recommendation. JIP not being able to manufacture enough zoom lenses just isn't a good measure of the health of the overall MFT infrastructure going forward. Doesn't really matter; we'll see how it unfolds over the next couple of years.

I've a set of expensive lenses from Panasonic. I use a camera for all-round purposes but mostly still photos. Among them I make a lot of horse jump competition images as my wife is doing it. That's the reason why I considered moving to Olympus ODM EM1 III from Panasonic due to too many ruined photos. Note that I haven't used high-end cameras, as it was GX80/GX85. However, lenses are not as compatible from what I hear. There can be a purple tint, AFC may not work or depending on lenses sometimes it's better to have in body or lense OIS. They will not work with both OIS in synchronous mode, F ring on lenses not supported etc etc. That's why I consider this GH5 II as an alternative to keep the lenses. The reason for this camera is because it is 2nd on dxo sensor rating to Olympus ODM EM1 for sports and low light performance while equal on the other aspects. What is your opinion regarding this camera for some sports still shot? Will AF manage to keep up? Typically for horse jumps I'd use 35-100 f2.8 Panasonic G Vario with Power OIS and most likely between 70--90-150-200mm zoom. I need to make multiple shots of a horse jump and move between places to manage capture multiple jumps within 1-2 minutes. So I've to rely on AF. Also, I often image dogs. Lenses I own: Leica 15mm Leica 42.5mm Panasonic G Vario POIS 12-35mm constant f/2.8 Panasonic G Vario POIS 35-100mm constant f/2.8

But man that size... it's really against the m43 spirit in my opinion. Look at the m43 primes like the laowa 7/5 f2, panasonic 15mm f1.7, olympus 45mm f1.8, they're tiny and the quality is amazing.

@@manyakus8919 I have always found Apple computers to be extremely non-intuitive, but others think just the opposite. So it would presumably be the same with cameras. Because of Canon's huge line of camera types, it's possible to first learn its menus on something like a little powershot pocket camera, then to move up the ladder to the premium bodies. The menus are very similar. Other manufacturers don't have a similar range of cameras.

How about "Tony, stand in one place and let's manual focus this." I guess if you don't have an assistant to manual focus for you. But I think you could stand up a focus image or color swatch card on a tripod and focus where your head is going to be. Also, guess I'm wondering why, with the overall level of cameras in general, we hear SO...MUCH...WHINING about how bad this or that camera is. Think people rely on gear a bit too much?

Last I checked, FF sensor aren't getting more light at the same (not equivalent) aperture. They're just much better at ISO performance at the same sensor resolution so they can ramp it up without noticeable noise or other degradation in quality. That's why 1.7 for MFT isn't any smaller than 1.7 for FF. The lenses just focus all the (same) light to a smaller area (and thus need to be much sharper).

@AoyagiAichou
@AoyagiAichou 3 жыл бұрын
@@TonyAndChelsea Well yes, I don't think that contradicts what I said. The amount of light going through the lens is the same at the same aperture. That's why exposure is the same regardless of crop factor (as you show in your own crop factor video). A 1.7 doesn't "become" a 3.2. It has DoF of a 3.2, that's it. ISO performance is purely photosite size thing (if the underlying technology is the same). That's why the GH5S is a low-light beast (in MFT terms) with the same ISO performance as the S1R. Well, that and its dual ISO.

@@andersistbesser personally for vlogging, I think most people would want footage that is great straight out of the camera without a bunch of grading involved. I don’t think vloggers care too much about 10 bit video. I know I personally don’t. But I could easily be wrong. Also, can you imagine a vlogger doing a single clip that lasts longer than 30 minutes? Hi Tony. You obviously haven’t seen the Panasonic DMW-XLR1. It’s a dual XLR Microphone Adapter for the hot shoe that’s powered from the camera battery and transmits the audio through the hot shoe directly onto the recording. www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/lumix-cameras-video-cameras/camera-accessories/accessories/dmw-xlr1e.html This Panasonic Microphone Adapter has been out for many years, works flawlessly with Lumix G series and S series cameras. It provides external physical audio recording controls and the camera’s audio menu controls change automatically when it’s on the hot shoe. The adapter has a cold shoe on top of it and can hold a shotgun mic. But for a wireless mic input I love to use Sennheiser’s AVX with their little “puffer” sized XLR receivers plugged into the adapter for perfect self-adjusting wireless audio with no cables anywhere. en-au.sennheiser.com/camera-wireless-lavalier-microphone-system-set-avx-mke2 I think it’s important for viewers who have watched your experience and comments related to using a Sony wireless mic product on the camera should know that Panasonic has a product that provides an excellent solution for getting high quality audio in, powered by the camera battery, with 3rd party mic options. Thanks for the early review of the camera. I’m keen to see if Panasonic releases a firmware update that will bring my trusty GH5 up to the same autofocus performance.

Those of us who are G9 users are not surprised by this significant improvement in AF. The G9’s AF has worked really well for me. The GH5 is better than the G9 in many video situations, but the G9 is a better stills photography camera. I have been intending to purchase a GH5S this year, and So I hope a Mark II of that camera gets released in coming weeks. If it doesn’t happen I will have to seriously reconsider if the GH5 Mark II might be a better option. When first leaked a lot of KZbinrs fell into the talk before thinking category, but those who are actually using it are showing that it is a fabulous and worthwhile upgrade over the older model. I suspect it was originally slated to be released last year, but the pandemic and chip shortages meant that it was delayed until now.

@@nerdMike Excellent. Yes the G9 is a superb camera and often underrated here on KZbin. Until the Mark Ii update I have considered it as generally better than the GH5 except for unlimited recording and shutter angle. The AF on the G9 has been a huge advantage. Now the GH5 will either match the G9 or better it. The G9 firmware update in June that you mention will be welcome. However, I am unaware of any updates for the GH5S and that is the one I would really like to see a Mark II version being released. I suspect, however that the GH5 gets a Mark II because it is intended to continue to be sold as a budget line after the release of the GH6 premium line and that the GH5S will cease production around that time and be totally replaced by its GH6 “S” version.

Set my camera on manual. Focus on that tripod's ball head or whatever you call it. Press record. Take over that other tripod's spot and start talking about whatever I want to talk about. And I'm using a 7 Yr old Lumix camera. I don't blame my camera for its poor auto focus. It just means, I have to think of a work around.
