I'm sure both are great cameras. However: I just came back from Africa with my G9, which is basically the same size and the lenses are the same. I own both but decided to leave the GH5 at home. I easily could carry the 8-18, 12-35, 35-70 and 100-400 with me AND a water bottle and other stuff - not unimportant if you are in the Namibian bush land on foot. Would I have used the S1 I would have been screwed as I would have had to leave my water at home... :) All kidding aside: For me personally the smaller lenses etc. kill everything else.
@grumpywiseguy59924 жыл бұрын
This video has to be one of your best! Not too long or full of boring spec detail. You adequately state the differences between the two cameras, their strengths and weaknesses, etc. The one thing you didn't mention was price. If I was a professional photographer/videographer, I would probably buy BOTH!! One for the high resolution studio work and some high grade portrait/landscape shots on a tripod, and the other (GH5) for video work of all types, from YTube to street shooting. They compliment each other in ways no other setup can do. One HUGE advantage is a similar menu system that will keep memorizing hundreds of different options to a minimum. Great cameras, great lens selections, and together with lens, they cost less than anything serious out of Leica!!
@juliancroot4 жыл бұрын
I agree with your summary. I also tried the S1H, but manual focusing is hard when the lenses are so big. The GH5 remains the most practical option for most things. If I need low light, I bring out the GH5s and a monopod. I think people have forgotten about monopods. Just get a decent carbon fibre model that packs away nice and small. 😁
@raksh93 жыл бұрын
It's funny, a monopod was on every job I did for almost eight years. But after I got a G9 with its super IBIS, I hardly ever bring a monopod, and going handheld has opened a new world of camera movement, speed and portability. But I do use a monopod when using extra long lenses or if shooting a lot from a stationary position.

Great video! I have the S1H and have owned the GH5 and GH5s. For multi-camera shooters, i'd say the S1H is an amazingly great camera and the GH5 is a great secondary camera. Their colors are very very similar. The GH5s has a magenta shift to it, but the S1H and GH5 lean on the greenish tint so they're really good together.

Your content/info was dead on ....as always! Even though 90% of my use of that lens right now is photos, it still is worthwhile and it is extremely close in sharpness with the best mft primes with my testing. You are the man when it comes to tech videos - practical including your own opinion A thought: Comparing identical exposure triangles over different formats doesn't hold any value in terms of real life use. When I shoot FF & I choose f5.6 - I would never shoot MFT at f5.6 if it can go f2.8 - like in your example. So it is 1/2 ISO of FF in real world situations. The GH5 still looks a little worse, but not as severe as it seems at identical ISO values (2 stop advantage S1 to 20MP MFT sensor, but not 4). Here the GH5 seems close to "not good enough" at ISO6400. In reality MFT just doesn't use 5.6 indoors... or after dark. There is no application for the DOF achieved that way.. not in that light; resolution records are also at faster apertures with practically any MFT lens. All the best!
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, although I don't agree with that. It is a bit more complicated. In reality you usually don't use FF cameras for ENG style, deep DoF shots when you are using longer focal lengths. At wider FoV the DoF is usually deep enough even at something like F2.8 on FF. F2.8 is enough for both FF and M43 in that situation, so FF will beat the M43 the same way, just like in most real-world low light situations.

I have used Nikon cameras for many years, however, I've recently been considering one of these. Really appreciate your reviews, and find myself coming back to watch them over and over again. You bring up many points I have wondered about, and by the end, hearing you say that if you had to choose, you'd go with the GH5 really means a lot. In the noise comparisons, I noticed you kept the same settings for both cameras. This means the GH5 has greater DOF at those settings. It would also be nice to see a comparison where the aperture is adjusted to match DOF, and ISO adjusted to compensate. This would hightlight the advantage of M4/3, which is that you get the same DOF at a lower aperture. I suspect this would even out the difference in noise between the 2 formats.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, full frame is not supposed to match M43 look, so I don't think that it is an advantage of M43. DoF is sufficient in that situation, nothing is out of focus, so I see no reason to compensate for DoF.
@alantuttphotography4 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter That's fine. What I meant was that if the FF image was shot at f5.6, then the M4/3 image could be shot at f2.8 and get the same look, and then the ISO could drop by 2 stops, giving a cleaner image. This is what I meant by the advantage of M4/3.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I understand, but as I have explained, I dont think that matching DoF is necessary, because that is not what FF users will do in the real wold usage.
@alantuttphotography4 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter Maybe not. As a user of FF cameras thinking about switching to M4/3, I know I would use lower f-stops, because it's not the number that's important, it's the look I want to create.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
I meant that the other way around. FF uses won't stop down to F8 for interviews to match M43 look at F4. Shallow DoF, achievable with standard lenses, is one of the main characteristics of the FF cameras and therefore I have no problem with side-by-side comparisons without matching DoF.

I would say going from the GH5 to the S1H would be the logical upgrade as both are video centric cameras.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
No, S1 and GH5 are hybrid. S1H and GH5S are video centric options.
@Filmmaker8094 жыл бұрын
Okay how about going from the GH5s to S1H.

I will try to make a comparison in the future, I have never used them side-by-side.

I've looked at some recent footage online from the GH5s and it still exhibits that stuttering effect with panning shots. Apparently the S1 and above don't have this problem.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
I don't see anything like that on my GH5, that would mostly be cause by video head for filmmaking technique.

You should check out the 56mm f1.4 from Sigma, it is one of the best lenses for m4/3 and one of the sharpest. I did a review for using it for portrait photography.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
I don't shoot portraits, so I will skip that one.
@nwvideographotographer71864 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter I also use it as my go to for product photography and b roll. It is just a great all around lens over the 42,5 1.2, I hope I didn't give the impression it was just for portraits. It would take your watch shots to another level.

nwvideographotographer sigma has no inbuild stabilization no apature ring and all in all its a much cheaper build. So no cmparison to the leica
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
@@andersistbesser Definitely not a cheaper build.
@andersistbesser4 жыл бұрын
The Hybrid Shooter it has no fstop ring and no focus clutch like the olympus lenses have so its a very basic lense and this looks cheap to me. Not a pro lense in my opinion, its not only about the optical qualitys but about the ease of use. Real pro lenses are more expensive of course but you get what you pay.
@JosephOlar4 жыл бұрын
Nice review but First off why is everyone complaining about rolling shutter? even the G5 show rolling you were panning slower than the other camera. Mirrorless camera do not have global shutter. It would be one hell of a challenge for all camera company that can adapt both shutter system in the camera. same as the smartphone they do not contain global shutter too. that my 2 cent
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, nobody is complaining about the rolling shutter on the GH5. If you are asking generally, I guess that people don't like skewed lines that are vertical in reality... on something like EOS R it will ruin you footage. I'm not sure if that is the answer that your were looking for, but I don't really know how to answer that.

Lack of cheap lenses makes S1 uninteresting for me at the moment.

As much as I like the S1, I will not trade my g9s. they are basically a gh5 mini
@JosephOlar4 жыл бұрын
then maybe it time to stop demonstrating the rolling shutter effect as we all know it cannot handle it A smooth panning is the goal to great video including using other tools and equipment like gimbal. Which you have done. Cheers
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, many cameras can handle it and it is still important for shooting fast action. Fast panning is completely valid technique for shooting sports and similar types of footage, so I will definitely keep testing rolling shutter in my reviews.

Perhaps we should remember that for a given depth of field a m43 camera will be operating at two stops numerically smaller f-stop and ISO than a Full Frame camera. It usually turns out that when trying to record the same image - with the same depth of field - the noise and therefore the "low light performance" is not massively different.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
It is a bit more complicated than that. In reality you usually don't use FF cameras for ENG style deep DoF shots when you are using longer focal lengths. At wider FoV the DoF is usually deep enough even at something like F2.8 on FF. In reality, the FF performance will be massively different in majority of cases, unless you use very bright lens on M43.
@Stephen.Bingham4 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter I'm a professional - I'm an engineer/scientist who designs fancy optical instruments for Physics research purposes. I think that photographers need to know three basic facts when choosing between FF and crop sensor cameras: (i) Bulky lenses can collect more light and render shallower depth of field (the size of the sensor has no effect); (ii) Larger sensors can process more light than smaller sensors and this leads to potentially larger dynamic range; (iii) Smaller sensors have faster read-out speeds which tends to be important in high resolution and/or high frame rate video. I think that defining "low light performance" as measuring the same image - with the same depth of field - is the only sensible starting point for such a discussion. But there are exceptions - astrophotography, for example - where depth of field is unimportant. In that context the "low light performance" is mainly determined by the physical size of your lens (or mirror) and has very little to do with sensor size.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
I have explained that multiple times in previous videos, as I have said this video is not dedicated FF vs M43 sensors comparison. According to my experiences, majority of users will get "massively better" results with FF cameras and commonly used lenses in real-world situations. For the purposes of this video, I am OK with saying that the low light performance is *generally* an advantage of full frame, even though it is a relative advantage as I have also said in the video.
@Stephen.Bingham4 жыл бұрын
The Hybrid Shooter people can judge for themselves, of course. They can compare the video and photo examples you and others have presented for m43 cameras at ISO 1600, for example, with those measured at ISO 6400 on full frame and decide if they can really see a substantial difference in quality.
@TheHybridShooter4 жыл бұрын
@@Stephen.Bingham Of course, although I still think that comparing ISO 6400 to ISO 6400 makes much more sense, as I have explained in my first comment.
