A really enjoyable and practical honest video. After two years of Sony, I sold my Sony gear and have got myself a nearly new S5 with the 20-60mm kit lens and the 50mm prime lens and also got a nearly new S1 body. I have only had them a couple of weeks so haven’t used them a lot but I am really happy with the results I have got so far.

This perhaps is the best review of the S1 since I can't seem to find great quality videos of it and this is july of 2024 and this video is 3 years old by now but by far the best review I've seen yet! I just can't believe that alot of people seem to not care about Lumix cameras since they lacked autofocus back then. Even though they were cinema beasts. Well atleast they are alot more cheap now in days making them the best entry and pro level cameras for cinematographers. Anyways great video brother!

Great work. May thanks for the video. I just shot a feature film on the S5, same sensor as S1H and S1. I shot out to the Ninja V, so I was getting 5.9k, 422, 12 bit, FULL FRAME RAW prores. The image is just poetry. I see they are now offering phase detect. I don't use AF myself but that puts Panasonic up there with the best of them. I bought it in December 2023 for photography. I like the sensor. Colour is good. Build quality top notch despite the typical design ethos (not a Leica). Screen and viewfinder are superb to me, so good for photography after several decades using film cameras. I use sigma art 40 and 28 1.4 lenses so far. Quite amazing to me, still learning really. Sensor is great in lower light and looks good at higher iso settings. I tried dslrs here and there and never gelled with them. I used medium format film mainly. But the mirrorless cameras are something very different and interesting to me. The ability to see exposure in the viewfinder is very impressive to me.

Hi Hugh, a great & concise S1 user testimonial. Im a hybrid shooter, and I’ve been striking gold with my body choices. Back in 2017, i acquired the Samsung NX1 at a bargain (as Samsung silently abandons NX mount). It was ahead of its time. BSI sensor, HVEC video, DCI 4k, oversampled video, robust body. Launched in 2015, the NX1 remained competitive as far as mid 2019. Then, i contemplated for a much ‘current’ mount to succeed the NX - on November 2019, i acquired the S1. Little that i knew this stroke of luck repeated again. Series of firmware updated had unlocked exciting functionalities, expanding creativity. A quick check on used market today (mid 2021), an S1 body w/out vlog sells at £1300, the same price I acquired mine back in 2019 - with vlog. As for lenses, I’ve carried forward using EF mounts and looking with keen eye at the used market as Canon throws its weight behind RF, making the EF an affordable, formidable and widest choices ever. Exciting times!

Well said and thanks for the nice words. Honestly, we've reached a point where camera's are future proof. I bought a 4k Blackmagic in 2014. That's 7.5 years ago. I got rid of that camera 2 years ago but not for it's image quality as it had a lovely sharp image and global shutter. The S1 will be good for years, especially if you shoot with a recorder in prores or raw. The image and DR is great. You really don't need any more.

Great video. I own the S1, and it's a wonderful camera. BUT, I shoot hand held all the time with my BMPCC 6k---using stabilized Canon lenses....and doing that I found Canon has been right all along: in-lens stabilization is superior to IBIS. I never have to worry about all the warpie stuff from the floating sensor. Hand held always looks so good with the Blackmagic.
@HuFilms3 жыл бұрын
Interesting point but with lens stabilisation it's very much geared towards holding the camera still whereas with sensor IBIS it combats movement better so you can do handheld sweeps and the like. The 6k is nice but I'd be losing a lot of the glass in my lenses as they're all FF.
@roscosart18882 жыл бұрын
I've used both handheld running and gunning and I find the S1 IBIS superior with native lenses. The great thing is it's a lighter set up, you can put a non i.s vintage glass on the S1 and it does a good job. Warping is a concern if you're using super wide lenses but that can be controlled using a gimbal. Hand held look is subjective of course, do what feels right for you.

It also seems a great fit alongside my G9 which, kinda like the S1 has become awesome for video after the 2.1 upgrade. BMPCC6K Pro have great 5 inch flip screen, in-built ND Filter an flexible Codecs without any external monitor while the S1 have great internal stabilizer, great battery lifetime & solid body and it feels last for many years. Really have hard time decide. The moire on the S1 quite scary thou.

Thanks, good comparison. The S1 would me a much more 'convenient' camera should you want to lug it around in a bag or whatever. Also, the shallow depth of field with full frame is nicer. Nice review. Have an s5 which also does 5.9k out via hdmi since december, think your vlog is a bit out of date. And since then the s1, s1r and s1h got the autofocus updates from the s5. But very nice review. Here, just prefer the smaller size of the s5. But the 5.9k internal recording which the s1 received would have been nice. The s1 lacks a flippy screen of course. All great cameras. The s1h would be the perfect camera for video, but bit expensive and a bit giant. Not exactly the thing for a casual video out hiking or something. Even my s5 is a bit big for that. For most hiking vids and vlogging, the gopro on a selfy stick is still the thing. Vastly smaller, lighter weight and much better video stabilization. And in good daylight, only marginally worse picture.

Great video, Hugh. I bought my S1 partly after your review from 2 years ago. It's been a wonderful hybrid camera, except for one annoying thing. In manual focus shooting 4k, the focus peaking gets very dim as soon as I hit record. When I stop recording, the focus peaking intensity comes back. This only happens in the 4k modes, not in 1080p. Have you also experienced this on your S1? It makes shooting vintage lenses very difficult. I'm on an S camera forum and apparently I'm not the only one. I'm asking trying to figure out if I have a defective unit or this is a glitch to this model.
@HuFilms3 жыл бұрын
I've always found the peaking to be very inaccurate alright and with my Tokina wide angle cine lens, I've missed focus on a lot of shots. Even today I still miss focus. Generally I focus through a zoom preview and set focus. With the Atomos recorder it has it's own peaking system so that's more reliable. Another thing I noticed is that the kit lens, the 24-105 actually loses focus in manual mode. E.G. if you have it left on a tripod and focus set, you need to check it regularly as something inside it can move and cause focus to drop. Crazy, I know but it has happened me. Thanks for the comment.

@HuFilms3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The 24-70 is the 'holy grail' in terms of focal length. Honestly, about 98% of movie scenes are shot within that range (full frame equivalent). A 2.8 is great but if cost is a thing then the 24-105 f4 is great too and you'll get a lot more reach. Realistically, we only need 3 lenses. That's a wide, mid and tele. So a 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 is everything you need really. You could always add an adapter to add to the zoom lens.

Great content, Hugh! I’ve appreciated your vids over the last few years. Personally, I’m looking to buy either the S5 or S1. I think the S1 has slightly better features after the newest update but the S5 seems like it may be easier to throw in my backpack for the day just to have with me. I like to ride and walk a lot. Do you think the weight difference would be that big of a deal in that scenario? The S&Q mode seems nice too but the customizable buttons on the S1 may be able to do the same thing (i.e. quickly switch to 4k 60fps or whatnot). Lastly, based on tests I’ve seen, it seems that CAF works best in APSC at 60 FPS. Have you tested shooting yourself with those settings?

Thanks, I appreciate it. Transportability will have a lot to do with the lens too. When you have no lens on the s1 it isnt that big or heavy. I havent used the s5 so cant overly compare. Hey, how did you get the software key for free? I could of sworn there was an update on my S1 where I would get those features, but I still don't have 10 bit recording on MOV or MP4 on my S1. Why is that?
@mtbboy19933 жыл бұрын
Have you tried to change the autofocus settings?
@denialvanish3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugh. You show the S1 with an external monitor while talking about 6k, but can it record 6k while viewing with the external monitor? I found out the hard way that GH5, which was actively promoted as 6k anamorphic capable, cannot view or record this resolution externally. I've been using the Anamorphot 1.33x adapter to get 6k squeezed/de-squeezed to 16x9, but I can't see a thing on the external monitor once I hit record because the HDMI-out on the GH5 can only do 4k. To add insult to injury, the GH5 de-squeeze option only works with full 2x adapters (all other anamorphic formats are "off"), so the image is squeezed on the camera's LCD while recording. Only solution is to use Panasonic's Image app which eats half the screen real estate with controls, or, as I'm doing, use Adam Wilt's FieldMonitor which allows full screen viewing on a smartphone or tablet and proper de-squeeze for all anamorphic formats. It's beyond me why Panasonic didn't release or at least update the GH5's HDMI to v2.1 to allow higher resolutions. But I'm assuming (hoping?) that the S-series are all HDMI 2.1?
@HuFilms3 жыл бұрын
Well, for a start, you know a lot more about this than me. I have the older Atomos inferno. Air no joy there. And actually since the update I get a pink line on the last vertical line of pixels. I think it should show you and image though. One thing you could try is a transmitter. And see if it'll transmit a hd image of what the camera is seeing. Also look into the new ninja V+ from atomos. Hope I make some sense here. It sounds like you'll figure it out somehow.

Btw, thanks for the comment.

S-series are sadly only HDMI 2.0; (only 18gigabits). so, no 4k 120 ever, no 8k 30 (even though the S1R's sensor might be capable of it). I've read rumors of an S1(,R,H) mark 2 eventually, but maybe that's wishful thinking.

I noticed you had the S1 on a Feiyutech gimbal. I have the Feiyutech AK4500 gimbal. Is this the same one you have and if so, does it hold the S1 pretty well?

I got very smooth results from that gimbal but I did sell it as I have a Ronin already. Yeah, the S1 works fine on it. Just don't bother with AF.

Nikoj Z6 ii or Panasonic s1?
@ericbeaton72113 ай бұрын
I honestly don't see any difference in the two cameras in terms of the photos they produce. My S5 seems to focus fractionally faster than the S1 does. but that may be down to the lenses, The only other real difference is obviously the weight of the two cameras.

Although you can get B-raw out of S1H to record on the Blackmagic recording monitors, Panasonic didn't offer it for the S1. And equally frustratingly, you can't yet get even a plug-in for Davinci Resolve to Edit ProRes Raw. You also have to use a Ninja V or a Ninja V+ (the new one), to record ProRes Raw over HDMI; the inferno and Shogun 7 will record ProRes Raw over SDI from sony cinema cameras, but not over HDMI. The most cost effective way to do it for your S1 would be to get a Ninja V, record ProRes Raw, get apple's compressor app (or premier) and transcode to ProRes 4:4:4:4 for use in Davinci Resolve. The B&H site doesn't show any difference in the quality of the monitor itself (same brightness, same dots) between the Ninja V and Ninja V+. It says that that the V+ is only HDMI 2.0, but supports 8k30. (Coming on your R5). (The base price for the V+ is $1500 US). My guess is that Atomos is Fibbing, and the chip in the V+ is HDMI 2.1 capable, because my understading is the 8K 30 violates the HDMI 2.0 standard). However, the V+ comes with a license for H.265 encoding.

Dang! That's annoying. I was sure the upgrade had b-RAW. Crap. Also, the fact that you can't use prores RAW in DR, what a pain! Realistically, I don't 'need' either as prores is already amazing for me to work with in DR. I do like the look of the new Ninja V+. When I saw it, I assumed it was just the new version of the V (which is out a while now) but then I saw the price!

Man, that's a pity. Though, honestly, normal ProRes is probably more than good enough for most of us. It's such a pain that Resolve doesn't allow for ProRes RAW.

How I get free software key update
@HuFilms3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, you can just go straight to the firmware 2. Perhaps ask on one of the Facebook groups.
@KeithSklower3 жыл бұрын
If you are buying a *new* camera then the store you buy it from will get you the DMW-SFU2 software (Filmmaker's) upgrade. without it you can't get 10bit 4:2:2 video over HDMI. And you don't get .MOV containers. If you bought your camera when it wasn't free, you might be able to have your store make a case with you with panasonic. If you bought it used from third party, then just consider that all the features it unlocks are worth the $200 fee. Some used sellers do pass along the license with the camera if they have it.

Poor Panasonic seemed to get lost in the noise and hype of the other companies and it is all down to Eye AF; that appears to be the reason why Canon are now as popular as Sony and the Nikon bodies are struggling to keep up.
@HuFilms3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's very much a vlogger style market where people demand reliable af. I'm still using the S1 instead of the R5 for my video jobs though. Even good and reliable AF can mess up a shot so manual focus is still best for me in work scenarios.
