I am open to "going back" to Panasonic. I owned the GH5 for a long time, and shot a feature film with it. But, the AF is still not there, yet. Yes, it has improved dramatically in recent firmware updates. And it's disturbing that Panasonic is insisting that they are sticking with the contrast based AF. I think that's part of the reason why their AF is still not completely reliable. I hope they do bring their AF to the level of reliability that we experience with Sony and Canon cameras. As a filmmaker, I actually don't rely on AF all the time. But, as an indie filmmaker, I have to have those moments where I can just grab the camera and get a shot without having to hire a crew or focus puller. And that's where good AF comes in. I really love Panasonic's color science. I think it's one of the best in the business, hands down. That being said, I am impressed with the S series from Panasonic. I love how they are expanding their line of cameras. But, I think they would enjoy a massive leap in market share if the AF in their cameras was more consistent. Great video content, as usual, gents. Cheers.

Once lockdown is over, we're hoping to go shoot more relaxing footage. We don't of course use AF for our work, being TELESERENITY forbids zooming and focus changing in order not to disrupt the calm, so cannot judge on that controversial issue that SXXY do better. Okay first off, thanks to you guys for ALWAYS informing us about which camera was used to record the episode. The S1H looks absolutely great---but still weighs a TON...too much, IMO, for run and gun video in a Texas summer. But one thing you guys ALWAYS omit is talking about focus assist features on third party non-electronic lenses for us manual video shooters. Those features always have been decent (not great, but decent) on the S1H...but the S1--not so much. The peaking on the S1, for instance, is fine for setting focus, but hit record and the peaking all but vanishes. Yes, it's better in natural or CineD, but shooting V-Log you're SoL. (Not a real problem on the S5, OR the GH5/GH5S, the G9, the G85---you know the drill. At present, give me an S5 with a miniHDMI and, unlike Gerald, I'm actually Done.) It is almost impossible to track a subject using the peaking on the S1. As good as the S1 was the severe paucity of the peaking was deal breaker for me. To compound that, the diopter of the S1 only goes to +3.5----not +4! (Same story with the S1H). Strangely enough, the diopter is fine on the S5---crazy, right?!? They give you an ESSENTIAL feature on a $2000.00 camera, and then Cripple Hammer it on a $4000.00 one?!? Camera companies! You can't understand what they do and why, but you can't shoot them! The diopter craziness is not likely to change, but I had a fix for that. But it would be wonderful if it were improved. But my question is a SIMPLE one--- with a SIMPLE answer I hope you'll have the kindness to supply. To wit: did Panasonic fix the Peaking on the S1 so it does not virtually disappear the moment you hit record?!? Beyond that, great review and your grading looks terrific. These are great cameras. I just wish they had not contracted that horrible virus before they made them....Covid??? Of course not. Canon Cripplehammeritis.

So far no comment from DP review about the focus peaking of then S1. Typical. Don't they read valid comments?---and this IS a valid comment in the form of a question: have they corrected the focus peaking issue of the S1 along with the other improvements? Crickets.
@RandomMotoThings3 жыл бұрын
What issue does it have with focus leaking if you don’t mind me asking?
@avarmadillo3 жыл бұрын
@@RandomMotoThings The minute you hit record the focus peaking all but vanishes---impossible to see in most cases, and impossible to use for tracking MOVING subjects. In addition, there is no ability to punch in to the image while recording. Basically, if you're shooting manual focus on the S1 as soon as you hit record you're shooting bind---the amazing VANISHING focus peaking totally cripples you to being able to effectively pull focus. There's more, but this is a deal breaker for me.

Fuji used to be great at updates, sadly since the T3 that’s not the case. Maybe Panasonic are realising the importance of keeping people in your ecosystem, especially since a lot of bank accounts aren’t in the best of health after the last year.

The one thing, which I suppose everybody already knows, the thing that ruins both of these cameras is the auto focus is complete crap! And until Panasonic fixes that… I have no use for their cameras. With the new Sony cameras you don’t even have to think about focusing it’s so extraordinary.
@TrollMeister_3 жыл бұрын
Autofocus is not complete crap. Far from it. With the newest firmware it's actually very good. You are watching too many videos or reading too many "reviews" from online armchair experts and simply echoing what you are reading. These "experts" are not filmmakers. The only content these experts create is "reviews" with the sole purpose of creating controversy and generating discussions. Post a video shot that you missed because the AF was 'complete crap'. I bet there isn't any. PS -- not saying that you are lying. Yes on paper Panasonic many not have the fastest AF but in real world shooting there will almost never be a scenario where a scene was lost due to Panasonic's 'crap AF' (assuming you were using native Panasonic lenses not another brand with adapter)

@@TrollMeister_ well thank you for the information. Good to know. I do trust your judgment. I’m going to be sticking with Sony but I was very impressed with the Panasonic S1... but now let’s pretend you can only own one camera… Between the Panasonic S1 or the Sony a7S3… Which would you choose? And then how about between the Panasonic S1H and Sony A1? I’m very torn between buying the A7SIII or the A1… Mostly concerned about the 4K video. THANKS!

@@2424rocket You're welcome. I have owned the S1 since it came out two years ago. I came from the Canon 5D and 7D series cameras and the difference in picture/video quality is night and day ! I was especially surprised by still image quality. I knew Panasonic was great for video (GH4, GH5 ) so I expected video to look much better than the Canon DSLR's which it did. However what I was not expecting was the stark difference in still picture quality. The Lumix stills were teeming with fine detail that I never gotten out of the Canons (jpeg or raw). As for AF , with the original firmware at release I will say there was occasional hesitation - as if the camera couldn't make up its mind what to focus on. With the new firmwares all that is gone. If you are using native Panasonic lenses, still image AF is instantaneous. Video focus is very good too after the last two firmware updates although I can't give a head to head comparison with the Sony's since I have never used one.

If this is a 24MP camera presumably it's 6000 by 4000 right? So why does it do 5.9k instead of just going all the way to 6k? Can anyone tell me?
@redbit61823 жыл бұрын
it can record 6k open gate = 3:2 aspect and 5.9k = 16:9 aspect, also 5.4k 3:2 is supported

@bobbyhalick3 жыл бұрын
Is All-intra the same thing as "Raw"?
@danieldougan2693 жыл бұрын
No. These are two very different concepts. All-I compression means the camera records the full image with each frame. This is in contrast to IPB that only records the part of the image that moved since the previous frame. All-I is easier for your computer to edit, but the files are larger. Also, All-I prevents motion issues in video that might cause an image to break up when there's a lot of movement. RAW is about recording more color information, much like shooting RAW in photography, but you have to use an external recorder in most cases. Typical internal recording is 8-bit or 10-bit, but ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW are 12-bit codecs. It just gives more flexibility for color grading. For the best possible image (theoretically at least), you would want RAW and All-I at the same time.

Yes, hey actually included it, believe it or not! But it doesn't have the synchro scan feature, although you can get over that by selecting a different shutter speed, but it doesn't work as well... Not a single word about the 200$ V-Log upgrade you "have" to buy to use the 6K recording.
@lutums3 жыл бұрын
If you do not have v-log then trust me - you also not need a new update
@KeithSklower3 жыл бұрын
the V-log upgrade also gives you 4:2:2 over HDMI, .mov files for HD recording. If you had to fall back on the camera files for sound, having a slight hickup when it moves from one .mp4 to the next is not fun to deal with. That alone was worth the price of admission. Nowadays, camera companies run specials where they give you the vlog if you are buying the S1 new.

Great for S1 users but for us S1H users this is very annoying. I hope the S1H is going to get a higher quality internal codec in the 5.9K mode? Double the bit rate please Panasonic, the camera can handle it! I'm not buying the Video Assist when I have the Ninja V. Either Atomos needs to add in BRAW or Davinci Resolve needs to get it's act together and let us import ProRes RAW. I have no idea what this obsession is with RAW video? If you can't expose and choose the correct white balance in camera, then you shouldn't be using cameras of this quality! Throw us S1H users a bone Panasonic, gives us a higher quality 5.9K internal codec that makes the S1H stand out from the crowd again like it did originally.

LPF on the sensor, real 24fps, no recording time limit, better exposing tools, HFR modes, time code, ... I think the S1H is on another league
@JasonBagherian3 жыл бұрын
@@redbit6182 Big deal! Does a piece of glass and a small fan nearly double the price of the camera? Everything else is software and the other cameras will most probably get those features further down the line. I bought the S1H for the 5.9K and superb build quality. Now I could get those features for nearly half the price. I understand that Panasonic needs to sell cameras because most of the morons today will only buy Canon or Sony due to the over rated and un-cinematic auto-focus, but don't piss off your clientele by adding the key feature to cameras that cost a lot less.
@redbit61823 жыл бұрын

@@redbit6182 The S1 has time code now too. Don't know if it has all the time code features of the S1H though, probably not, but just having it is a huge difference
@redbit61823 жыл бұрын
@@machannel8746 True, the S1 can add timecode as metadata on internal recorded file as well as output it over HDMI, so it can start the recording on external device like the Ninja V. But, the S1H can input/output a timecode signal through the flash port with a bnc cable, this allow the camera to be easily integrated on a set with multiple cameras and audio recorders as an A or B cam. It's a substantial difference. Anyway, don't get me wrong, I think the S1 is, now, the best hybrid camera you can pick.

Could Panasonic change the AF system on their L-series cameras to something like the Dual Pixel AF through an update? Or would an upgrade like that require different hardware and would just have to be released in future cameras?
