Panasonic Gives Lumix G9II RAW Recording

Panasonic just announced that it will be updated the G9 ii camera to have raw output recording capabilities. Does this mean that the Lumix GH6 is no longer the best option for video?

The benefits of the G9ii probably outweigh the GH6 at this point, but if they put the G9ii sensor with its PDAF in a GH6 body and call it the GH6ii, that would be such a good camera. The extra buttons, the flip out screen, and the more reliable thermal management would make it near perfect.

For the GH7, I'm guessing this: BlackMagic RAW internal. Panasonic gave them L-Mount and Blackmagic paid for it by giving Panasonic BRAW. Also,...the G9-II has a very low native ISO in VLog and I'll guess the GH7 will have a 2000 ISO VLog, much higher than the G9-II. Those two features and a cooling fan will be everything the GH7 needs to beat the G9-II for video.

I have the GH6. That thing shoots unlimited videos since it has a fan and is made for shooting videos. Its the best camera I've had so far. There's always going to be a newer camera that comes out every year.

It's a great camera. You can really feel the improvements going from GH4, GH5, GH6.

GH6 has also more versatile screen mechanism that I really loved, dedicated audio button, more custom settings on a dial, time-code input and CFExpress B card slot allowing it to record internally with some codecs that G9 II can only record on SSD drive. But photographic and AF advancements were so huge I basically had to sell GH6 and go for G9II.

“If you can remember back then…” I started shooting video on the Nikon D90 that had video capability prior to Canon offering it in the 5D. Great video! I just bought the G9II for video after shooting with a G5 for the last 4 years.

In the sense of unifying in One Camera, the two hybrid cameras they already had competing with themselves on the market about the generation until now, it make sense. I was talking exactly about: the Lumix G9 line (photo and video focus) and the Lumix GH (photo and video focus), so these are two camera for the same brand that focused on the same top level photo and video. Unify those two camera lines in one, that's where it makes sense. Great move!!... But, what about the video first m43 camera line from Lumix fow now? To respond that, so in this case, Panasonic have to develop a Video focused camera line up, like the Lumix GH-S line or other. But, something that first focused on great video quality that can compete seriously with the best crop sensor cameras on the market right now, like the Sony Fx30 and the Fufi XH2S. For me, I think the Lumix ghS line makes more sense. Because it already had the popularity of being the first competitor to the unbeatable Sony A7S line (mark2), a line that is famous for top video quality, graat low light and High Level Dynamic Range. So in this case, if Panasonic come back with a second version of Lumix GHS line, something much better than the version one, they will easily or automaticly gain the Top-1 Place on the crop sensor camera market.

GH7 will have all of G9ii & GH6 + Cooling fan to take care of even more cinematic codecs + Stacked sensor to provide lower rolling shutter.

The G9 and GH5 where almost identical - just with a different body. The G9 had a little bit less cooling and couldn't run as long as the GH5 but at the end Panasonic added almost all video functions. This time, there are larger differences. The most important are, the fan, the tilt flip screen and the CFExpress slot in the GH6. This allows to do a lot internal recording where the G9-II needs external SSD recording. On the other hand the G9-II has the new AF, better IBIS and DR-Boost with all ISO-settings. You don't need to go to ISO 2000 to get DR-Boost with VLOG. Panasonic don't want to make people think about this or that camera, so they put all they have into the G9-II, making it right now the best option for more or less everybody but this will change sooner or later. I think Panasonic is working on RAW recording internal. They want people to get used to RAW and that's why it is important to have it in the G9-II together with the new AF. If Panasonic get this ready to roll out, they will show a GH camera with the G9-II sensor (probably more improved), all the features of both cameras plus RAW recording internal. This will immediately be the filmmaker-camera of choice while the G9-II remains the perfect hybrid camera for KZbinrs, content creators and travel Vlogger for years to come.

The tilt-flip screen on the GH6 and the ergonomics of the GH6 is very important for me. The GH6 just feels like it would never break. The same feeling I had with the GH4 and GH5.

All the Lumix G camera's have in camera "Focus Stacking". G9 seems to have it , but not the new G9MKII ? Is it now available with the latest software update ? Did you look for this feature in this firmware update ?

Can the G9mk2 export RAW video through the USB port directly into a SSD?

Panasonic is fighting for market share and possibly even for survival on a market. G9II is their only m43 camera with PDAF. Nowadays almost noone buys consumer cameras without such technology. To preserve their market share they have to market agressively and bring on a table everything they got, at least untill GH7 comes with whatever improvements they plan for it. Or maybe they will just update it to GH6II with G9II sensor but in GH6 body and maybe some extra hardcore filmmaking software based features like false color.

Do remember that Blackmagic RAW and ProRes RAW are not real unprocessed RAW formats. They replicate RAW well but if you've ever worked with linear uncompressed/lossless 14bit raw you'll understand what i mean

Try the GHAlex LUT by Emotive color with the GH6. You'll be so blown away you'll have a hard time believing it's your camera
