As a new S1 owner, I’d say this is a fair assessment of the camera. I shoot portraits and weddings and it’s working out great! I wouldn’t choose this system (as of yet) if I were tracking sports, etc. This does not mean C-AF is worthless. I tracked couples walking down the aisle of a dark church today with no issues. Of course, they aren’t zig zagging like crazy and speeding up and slowing down. I can tell you that the camera feels GREAT and the controls are placed just right. For battery life there are a variety of power saving modes and for long shooting like I do you will want to experiment with those.

It is so very important for any photographer to determine their priorities they will incur regarding their shooting habits and styles. That said in MY case continuous focus has never been an issue. Having been a professional wedding photographer years ago, and now sticking to Real Estate, Portraits and Landscapes I'm finding, after having already worked with the Nikon, Sony and Canon offerings, this S1 is literally made for me. Superior build, better EVF, more useful feature sets and ergonomics you simply fall in love with. I know there are so very many reviewers and potential owners that will push this camera aside due to it's DFD, but in some ways I'm finding it so darn fast and accurate for my style of shooting I can't imagine a Hybrid for what I do any further. As I say each shooter needs to evaluate their priorities, but if they primarily shoot relatively slow or still subjects this camera WILL capture your heart.

Sounds to me like the G9 is still Panasonics best overall stills camera if you don't need ultra low light performance or ultra shallow depth of field. Continous Autofocus is actually quite good on the G9. Stabilization and rolling shutter also performs better.
@fellowcitizen
@fellowcitizen 5 жыл бұрын
Several reports that the S1 exceeds the G9 AF. Although the acquisition in AF-S is not as fast due to the larger sensor (0.08s vs 0.04s I believe.)
@timberwolves100
@timberwolves100 5 жыл бұрын
@@fellowcitizen I don't doubt the AF is adequate but I doubt better than the G9. The G9 is not perfect and misses focus sometimes too. S1 still has a few pros over the G9 other than the bigger sensor. Personally for me the G9 is better for the price, size and my uses. But certainly either camera is very good in different ways.
@fellowcitizen
@fellowcitizen 5 жыл бұрын
@@timberwolves100 They'd be great to pair together. I've specifically heard a few times now that the S1 AF system exceeds the G9, but it's early days so it may not be accurate, and probably doesn't differ much. The G9 was apparently noticeably better than the GH5. Logically, I'm baffled that anyone could consider the S1 to be anything less than brilliant, but politically, I recognise that there are a lot of fanboys and paid trolls muddying the waters.

@@fellowcitizen I'm definitely not one of those trolls and try to be fair. I know you weren't implying that. I've not used the S1 personally and can't give an honest comparison. @fellowcitizen
@fellowcitizen 5 жыл бұрын
@@timberwolves100 Definitely not implying that :) Yeah, I'm not bothered even if the G9 AF is better. In large part I'll be using Voigtlaender 35mm f/1.2 and Zeiss M 50mm f/2 manual lenses anyway. I realise that AF can be a big deal for some purposes, but I find I can get by with the X-Pro1 AF quite happily most of the time - even with the original XF35F1.4 So I'm satisfied that it'll be sufficient ;) The complaints are a bit like those one might hear about a Bronze-medallist failing to win Gold - it's got to be kept in proportion.

I tried this camera at my local store. The ergonomics are great and the single shot autofocus was instantaneous even in the somewhat poorly lit store. People need to stop complaining about not being able to use tracking to photograph their kids running around. Instead they need to work on their technique and not rely 100% on automation. I photograph my 5 year old running in the park and around the house with my manual focus Leica M240 with a pretty high hit rate, even at f2. Not because I’m good, but because I practiced a lot and learned about focus traps, hyper focal distances and other terms unknown to modern enthusiasts.

To photograph our radio controlled model planes flying, we shoot 4K 60fps video and grab frames from the footage, most of which people cannot tell from actual still shots. If you want pics of fast moving subjects, in particular those with random trajectory changes, (kids, birds etc), just shoot video and grab frames. Works for me even on my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or our iPhone 8. Best use manual focus with a decent depth of field to keep the shots in focus.

I have bought the S1, and it's a really nice camera to use. The ergonomics, EVF and fun factor is great. It also feels lighter than it looks, oddly as it is heavy. The autofocus is not as bad as people make out, it does miss things but the focus tracking does work if you set the camera up right and (a) get the camera to lock on at the start and (b) the subject is not too far away (e.g. about 40ft+). It does lose focus from about a meter out. I have put it through its paces to test it, using my children running, jumping and doing all sort of things to fool the system! Coming from a Canon 1DXii (and Sony A9), it's definitely not in the same league as either of these cameras. But, it's not as terrible as people are reporting. Bottom line is the AF is good enough for most normal applications, but it you shoot sport or wildlife, then avoid it (it's not marketed as this sort of camera anyway).

Gorgeous image quality, but it's a shame about the lack of phase detect AF. That's not really a deal breaker for me though, because, as a Pentax shooter, I'm used to sticking to single point AF and using some old-fashioned techniques to get a good hit rate on my shots. Also, my shooting style is fairly slow and steady, and I don't tend to run and gun, so I don't suppose I'd really care about the shortcomings of the DFD system too much. What really rules it out for me is the price tag, and lack of lenses, and I'm sure most people would feel the same. This is nothing that we didn't know before this camera was even released, but it's nice to see such great image quality, ergonomics and UI, so it's not completely D.O.A. and may work for some people (with fairly deep pockets).

"Life finds a way...." Awesome. :-) I'm firmly in the Panasonic m43 camp. But if I was to go back to FF, one of these Panasonics would do it. Most likely, the S1R. Okay, so video AF isn't as good as the best. And still needs work. I have to say, I admire Panasonic for sticking to their guns. It would be easy to say "Let's just do PD and make everyone happy". Even with the 'inferior' AF, GH5 and GH5s still are the best selling Indie and small production video cameras. So good for them. Panasonic knocked it out of the park with these cameras. Keep up the good work DPR and Panasonic!

One reason why I'm never switching to Sony is because of the colours, although they have improved the colour science a lot with what they said in the newer models, I just can't switch to them because they did not have the pedigree. For my uses, the S1 might be the camera for me because I like to shoot street scenes in low light which helps by having less megapixels when compared to the S1R and I would like to do some landscapes occasionally.

How is the update ? Better in low light ? 6k video ? I have the G9 I’m not worried about someone running at me ! Flip on the 6k video and done ! 4.2.2. 10 bit internal two slots and I use a V90 card ! How long will Sony stay in the market, their big days are over. Do they have the money to still compete ? Not with Panasonic ! Check the numbers before you buy a camera ?

Question though....What's with the incessant,redundant comments about DSLRs being dinosaurs?That and the term 'fanboy' have to be the true mark of a retard,because even film is still being made,so how can DSLRs be dinosaurs?It's just a bold faced LIE and more misinformation.That goes along with 4/3 being dead,etc,etc..It's like some creepy,fascist agenda and attempt at conditioning.It's now 2020 and still at major events,like professional sports,it's still DSLRs that rule.Yeah,yeah,we heard the BS about 5 years ago,that mirrorless would 'take over',and we're still not there.Tell you what though.Let Panasonic update the S1 with AF close to Sony,insane battery life like Canon's DSLRs,and glass a little bit less expensive,and Panasonic would outsell most.No,they cannot mess with Fuji,who had cornered their market,and is the ONLY camera company in the black right now,financially.

I so badly wanted a Nikon Z6 but then comparing image quality between it and the Panasonic S1 I could see from both JPEG and Raw files downloaded from the DP Review pages of sample photos that the S1 has more detail as well as the same amount'ish of noise as the Z6 at high ISO. I know the Z6 is capable of 12fps burst nbut using AF-S the S1 is capable of only 3fps less at 9fps. I used to have a GH5 and never used continuous autofocus or focus trsacking but still got excellent photos from moving subjects using AF-S in burst mode. All I did was move the camera to track the subject instead of the camera being stationary and letting focus tracking try.

I'm a documentary filmmaker for cinema and I love this camera, but I have three big problems with it: 1.) The rec button cannot trigger my external recorder, because my S1 doesn't put out timecode over HDMI and no trigger signal. Is this only on my camera??? 2.) I would love to shoot in some difficult situations without an external monitor/recorder. The great EVF would allow that. But I shoot most of my films for cinema in cinemascope. But there is really no options for framing markers inside the camera. Only helping lines for photo. That is really a shame. So I cannot frame my picture without monitor. (I think the S1H has the same problem). 3.) The switch to APS-C mode is not assignable to buttons. You have to go into the menu and click twice. Simply to long for some situation where you have to change it fast or on a gimbal. An my Sony a7M3 you can have this switch simply by pressing a button. This is a joy to use. When you record with external recorder only you can change it during record - like a cut. That would be great to have on the S1 also.

In my opinion, this is the best 35mm system for back country landscape photography and that is how Lumix should market it. Dual card slots are a must and the build quality/ weather sealing blows Sony away. No point in cluttering the sensor with PDAF points when you don't need AF. The viewfinder is incredible and the IS is great for fleeting moments like rainbows, landscapes with wildlife in the frame etc where there's no time for the tripod. This obviously isn't a sports/ wildlife camera, but cameras don't need to be everything to everyone. I've been using my S1 for about a month and it suits my needs far better than the Fuji X or Sony A series.

Panasonic teams did a great job with the S1/R bodies. However, one thing is concerning me. One can easily recognize how serious a manufacturer is addressing a new (PRO) system is whether they start with the most needed primes - 35/50/85 (if in doubt see how Canon is developing the RF mount lens line up). With the S1/R Panasonic is obviously targeting the pros and semi-pros. Not sure what's behind the f/4 zooms in this case. They must address the holy trinity primes asap if they want to get the people jumping on it. With this being said, I'm quite firm that these two bodies have plenty of Leica DNA in them - the overall image look, tonal mappings and everything else is indistinguishable from the images that the latest Leica bodies are producing. What's more - I am sure the new Leica SL will have the sensor from the S1R just like the Q2 has it. And Panasonic is making the Q... messy, isn't it? :) The S1 and S1R will really shine with the Leica SL lenses if one can afford those. So far - these works better on the Panasonics than on the Leica SL itself. Not sure what Sigma is doing here at all - with them this alliance sounds to me like an alliance between Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz and Kia. We are living in a really interesting times - Leica and Canon (with RF) have the greatest lenses, Sony and Canon (in the "R") have some fantastic AF capabilities, but Panasonic dropped the best mirrorless bodies so far. I'd love to see Canon releasing the same bodies for the RF lenses. And yes, I'm fully with Panasonic engineers for not implementing the PDAF, as PD sensors impacts negatively the IQ. It is also a messy stuff which motors one must use for their lenses when having a "hybrid" AF system - USM is better for PD, while linear motors are much better for PDAF... Last, but not least, from those two - the S1R is the right camera for photography and the S1 is the better camera for video and low light shooting. Get both for the ultimate set which is sharing the same lenses and mount the new SL Summicrons and wait for the end of the world.
@JHCCAZ
@JHCCAZ 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps they are factoring in the Leica prime lenses already out or close to it. Existing 35/2, 50/1.4, 75/2 and 90/2, all outstanding at around $5k apiece. Panasonic already came out with their 50, excellent and though not cheap, competes very well with the existing 50 Summilux for about half the price. Sigma is on the verge of a whole slew of Art lenses: f/1.4 primes in native L mount: 20 24 28 35 40 50 85 105. Also 14/1.8 135/1.8 and 70/2.8 Macro. Those are all in the range of $850 to $1600 except the 2.8 Macro which is cheaper. It is my understanding that any equivalent Sigma lens you already own can be sent in for L-mount conversion that will turn it into the same thing as the Sigma Native L-mount lens (i.e. without potential adapted-mount shortcomings).
@alexanderivanoff
@alexanderivanoff 5 жыл бұрын
@@JHCCAZ I agree for the Panasonic 50/1.4 - looks very good to me. However, Sigma lenses and the overall "quality" of this brand simply does not belong to this alliance. The other two members are in very different league - Panasonic is very respected company and especially when it comes to electronics - they're real masters. Very few companies (if any) can do electronics better than Pana. Leica could be easily called "King of lenses", while Sigma is still an off-brand, cheap manufacturer of sharp, but boring, sterile and very flat looking, budget lenses that has nothing to do with the others. Do you enjoy shooting Sigma if you've shot and owned Leca lenses? One more thing I think you're missing is that sending any of the Sigma lenses back to them for L-mount conversion is nowhere near as good as having a natively designed glass for mirrorless. Take for instance the Sigma EF-mount. Although you can change it to L-mount, it still remains the retro-focus design lens that doesn't benefit from the mirrorless design and IQ it gives. My understanding is that if one aims to shoot with these Panasonic bodies, he is obviously after quality and can trade the size, weight, price, etc for it. Then why would mount a cheap Sigma lens on it, when it is not a native mount (by design, not by flange) and just can't deliver beautiful rendering and image quality. Being sharp is by far not enough. Besides resolving power, It must also have soul, art, great micro-contrast and pleasing rendering, which is where Sigma is struggling. To put it otherwise - I see no sense to buy a great and expensive body and to mount a cheap glass on it. If this is the case, then better get a Canon RP or a Sony A73 and you're all set. Otherwise it looks like mounting a Sigma on Leica SL (which is what the Panasonics are). My 2 cents.

Would S1R have better AF performance ? I found AF in S1 to struggle when shooting in contra lighting conditions (Light behind the object) and not great when kids are moving. Still have chance to swap :) Should I go with S1R or maybe Sony A7IIIR ? Their biggest mistake might have been not pricing it higher. The number of negative comments made by people that can’t quite afford it are endless. How many whiny “You didn’t!/You should’ve!” comments do you see after a Leica review of an $8K Camera with a sensor from 2012? Next to none. Sigma also gets themselves into this same trap by pricing Zeiss level glass (with AF) for less than half the price of Zeiss. So many complaints about size, or missing this and that-all complaints that Zeiss could get, but doesn’t. The unsolicited opinions of people who think they’re the target customer, but aren’t, simply clog up the internet.
