I just bought the S1 to use exclusively with manual focus lenses and it is AMAZING for that. I can't speak to video or autofocus, but if you just want to shoot manual focus, it is a dream, even coming from the A7 series that I still love.

www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-s1-s1r-review-in-progress/3 hi! does your camera have a small dent as seen in photo #4 in this link? I got 4 S1s from Adorama and every single has this small dent around upper right corner on the wall behind LCD screen. I am on my 3rd replacement unit and it’s very frustrating. I wonder if it is a design flaw and everyone else has it or is it just me being unlucky :)

I just received my S1 and spent a few hours testing it out at the San Diego Zoo. Overall I'm very happy with my choice but it's not without its downsides. Its size is great in my hands and I have fairly small hands but it is heavy compared to the other mirrorless options, although it doesn't feel any heavier than my Nikon dslr's I'm used to. I do hope either Panasonic or Sigma expands the L mount camera offerings and make a less robust and less expensive body more suited for walking around street photography. Likewise with with their lenses. Sigma lenses are fantastic quality but not exactly small or light weight and from what Panasonic has shown, their lenses aren't going to be either. It would be nice if one of the two companies were to come out with a few lighter weight and more compact lenses even if they are of lesser quality. The autofocus is okay but is definitely its Achilles heal. It's very quick if you have the right mode selected for the subject. I haven't shot any action to test that out but even with still subjects its autofocus can get confused and I found myself constantly switching between autofocus modes trying to find the one that works the best. I wasn't bothered by the supposed DFD pulsing, I didn't notice it at all, but its frequent confusion made me keep switching into pinpoint autofocus to hit the right object to focus on was getting pretty frustrating. I'm used to my Nikon where I can pretty much leave it in 3d autofocus connected to backbutton focusing and have it just work all the time. There was a lot of menu changes that were needed to have it function in ways that to me seemed the obvious choice for what should have been the default setting. The biggest one is the default is to automatically brighten the viewfinder rather than display viewfinder with the exposure that would result from the current settings. This is so odd considering seeing what you'll get for exposure is one of the if not the biggest benefit of a mirrorless camera. It's doubly odd because the default is to not show the exposure meter in the monitor also. So yeah, the default is to NOT show exposure preview and also to not show the meter. That's beyond dumb. Thankfully you can change both those settings. The only other thing I've found I dislike (so far) is the placement of the strap attachment loops. For some reason I always hit them when grabbing the camera and they just get in the way. Of course thats the same with most cameras but it would be great if a manufacturer could figure out a way to make those removable for those like me that don't use them and attach their strap from the bottom thread. A lot of KZbin reviewers have complained about the power switch. I think its perfectly placed. There is no chance of accidentally hitting it instead of the front control wheel and it has enough resistance to prevent accidentally bumping it. It's placement and shape also makes it easy to find by feel and from there to find the button to light up the lcd and rear buttons. I do feel the dials feel a little cheap and plasticky though. They aren't bad, but just don't feel as durable as the body itself. Likewise, the doors that cover the connection ports feels a little weak and you have to really make sure you closed them well to retain their seal. I had been worried the shutter button would be overly sensitive like on Panasonic's G9. I found that so annoying it led me to not buy it. Happily, it does not have that problem and the shutter button has just the right amount of tension. Some standout features I've really enjoyed are the beautiful viewfinder, the fact you can customize the function of pretty much every button is great and the dedicated dial position for time lapse is wonderful. If you switch the dial to time lapse then hit the menu button it knows to automatically take you to time lapse settings in the menu so you don't have to search for it. The power saving feature works great, I got up to a little over six hundred shots and still had about 40% battery and it wakes from sleep so fast it never felt like I had to wait to use it. The menu system is easy to navigate, you can turn on or off the little menu tips and if on, they actually make sense. Overall, the things that really sold me on the camera are all the special functions Panasonic builds into their cameras. The high res mode, the 6k photo mode, the post focus and focus stacking, their excellent time lapse implementation, their excellent manual focus implementation. and of course their superb image stabilization only bested by Olympus. In fact, if Olympus had made a full frame camera that had the features of the Omd EM1 Mark II that would have been my purchase. Panasonic's S1 is the next best thing.

@@tnguyen1307 Being you saw it on four bodies I looked closer to see if I just missed it. There's no dent and it's hard to image their would be since it's plastic there and not metal. There is however a very small discoloration in the plastic maybe 2mm in size positioned right where the upper right hinge would hit the back if you tilt the LCD up from the bottom. Perhaps that's what you're seeing. I don't see it as a problem.

@@jeffreywrightphotography mine is definitely a dent (i wish i could post a photo here for you to see). i tried to put a piece of thin paper in between and did the closing and opening of the LCD, then later i have noticed the paper got shrinked and scratched at that contact location. i believe the frame part that juts out behind the LCD screen is made of metal. the dent is located about a bit more than half an inch from the Q button.

There is also a revamped Nikon af system due to drop this week as a firmware update to z series with switchable eye detect, better low light af and pro res raw. I wouldn't disregard the competition for the s1 at all. Great time to be a consumer.

Superb review of the S1 cameras! I think Panasonic did the right thing here. Rather than trying to race in the "small size" market with everyone else, they took a completely different turn putting them in a unique position in the market. DSLR like size for those who like it (and many do with pros and cons). Superb build quality, excellent image quality, lots of real knobs and buttons (like a larger G9) combined with a superb touch interface. What's not to like? Some people complain about contrast detect AF but if my G9 is anything to go from it's really fast and excellent in most situations. If I will add the system it would be the S1, plenty of resolution already, smaller files and cheaper. Rather spend the extra money on lenses. /Rasmus

Without the common L-mount of Leica, Panasonic and forthcoming Sigma cameras the future of Panasonic full frame mirrorless cameras would be similar with that of Fujifilm medium format mirrorless cameras with GFX mount. Nearly all people who pay more than 2000$ for a camera know the importance of the variety of lenses. Sigma is great with lenses and if it is focused in L mount, Panasonic will have a great support of affordable L mount lenses. Leica full frame L mount lens are fully compatible with the Panasonic full frame mirrorless cameras. They exist since 2015 with the introduction of the Leica SL full frame mirrorless camera. However Leica lens are not plenty and are very very expensive even for rich enthusiasts. On the other hand they have great quality. Professional as long as they have profits don't care about the cost of their equipment.

I was considering buying in to the system, but then i read an interview of the Sigma CEO that stated that their L mount lenses are not going to be able to use DFD tech! Without that, Sigma lenses are going to be crippled as the Auto focus is going to be affected really bad... I really hope they work it out cause i value both brands a lot, but as it is at the moment, i see very limited future for the platform.

I was given the permission to stick my own SD card into the S1 to take some sample photos, which I can review more. Overall it's way too big and too heavy for me. @Phil Jones65 It's priced competitively for its feature set but I agree, all mirrorless systems are priced higher than it feels like they should be. I wouldn't expect that to improve though. With a continuously shrinking market, camera manufacturers have to rely on per unit profit margins rather than making money through volume. Dedicated camera equipment has become a niche product so those of us that use interchangeable lens camera systems are just going to have to accept that prices will remain high.

For me, it's mostly the lenses as to why it would take a lot for me to switch. Anyone who's been with Canon or Nikon or even Sony for very long has invested lots of money in glass. Not to mention flashes, grips, filters, odds and ends and various accessories. I can't even imagine what kind of camera and features it would take to get me to switch and reinvest - even if they offered the same lenses, which the don't. I guess they're marketing to new photographers? But that's a tough sell when there are more established brands that are cheaper with better lens selection.

Nicely done! Great cameras and lenses no doubt, but big and expensive. I'm sure there's many who will appreciate. I'll look forward to the smaller models (closer to GX -style) in future. As a general comment, has so many been reduced to "content creator" levels nowadays? One isn't favored to become their own master nor the ultimate creator, but just some "content churner". All the assembly line workers feeling "content creators" woowoo and off the roof. It's just a comment to the trends of times and how the masses and shaped...
@TheCameraStoreTV

I personally don't see the term content creator as a negative descriptor. I think of it as describing more of a versatile (multi-media) creator, rather than a content churner. There are many professions out there that require high-quality photos and videos for online marketing or documentation, and I could see a camera like this being used for that. It can produce extremely high-resolution stills, good looking 4K video and other professional features. One thing we didn't mention (and should have) is that Panasonic kept some of the basic settings on the dial. So if the S1 was being passed around an organization for content creation, non-experienced users could get good results out of it.

Hmm. On the one side, I think it’s nice that we’re finally over the miniaturisation of cameras. A pro camera you want to work with all day needs buttons, a deep grip and long battery. All that (very often) means: bigger body. So that’s nice. On the other side, snappy AF matters for many shooters. And with a body that big and expensive (and a limited selection of lenses atm), I am wondering: wouldn’t pretty much everybody be better off with a D850, 5D4, A7iii at this price point?

Franz Steinberger No, because none of the cameras above can do 10-bit video internally (or externally via HDMI) and with the upcoming update, the S1 will be the only full-frame hybrid mirrorless camera on the market to do 10-bit 4K 4:2:2 internally, so people shooting photo and video can have the best of both worlds in one body.

You make some good points but l expect Panasonic's prices to drop. Full frame mirrorless is in a frenzied state with the intense competition and shrinking camera market. As an old Nikon shooter l went down the D850 path and for now will watch from the sidelines. One thing for sure, lens prices using Nikon and Canon as examples are on the up.

There's a very large list of things the Panasonic is better at than its competition and a very short list of things it's comparible or worse at. In the end it just comes down to which of those things are most important to you as a photographer.

Reviewers should start giving credit to Sony. You guys should’ve said; “the S1 is their Sony a7 III version and the S1R is their a7R III version” instead of their 24mp and 47mp 🤣🤣

It is a very hard choice to invest a lot of money into unknown lens base and marginal auto focus system. Let's face it, for travel and hiking it is a quite heavy system. It will be difficult for Panasonic to penetrate the "Sony" mirror-less "monopoly" , and the Nikon and the Canon with low cost version RP ???? Anyway it sounds like a good camera.

This is not a review, it is just an advertisement Here shown of all the characteristics described in the documentation. Where can I download examples of shots taken in the RAW and with different characteristics of illumination and lights ? Where is the luminance scale with dynamic range? Also test on the sharpness of the camera is not made correctly!

Looks like a tipical Sony. Very prime colours, and very desaturated hilights. MASSIVE lenses, slow and all the problems of full frame. I would not swap for my GH4.

Those 2 cameras are great but also anvils... With the 50 F/1.4 L mount, they weigh 2kg ! Too much. I had a A7RIII and I changed for a G9. That's an excellent body, much better than the Sony, and some M4/3 lenses are really amazing. Don't ever trust marketing when they say that FF is the holy grail... Think by yourself.

@@en.6565 Why not? Sensor size is a small part of the picture. Literally.
@xmlthegreat

@@en.6565 Yes, because that FF camera crops 1.5x to do 4k60 while the X-T3 only crops 1.18x. Since the sensor size is irrelevant to the processor this means the Panny has a worse processor or one that is tied up by something else, most likely the DFD calculations. And they call it 'no compromises' camera lol

Paid updates, they are really milking this camera cow. It`s expensive enough as it is, especially when you have so much competition and a much better price.

I expect they'll be in the bargain bucket soon, hopeless cameras with lousy autofocus, heavy, massively over priced and with expensive and limited native lens. It's like they haven't been into a camera shop recently and seen what is selling, i.e. the Sony A7iii which is outselling the Nikon and Canon mirror less together.

ourtvchannel doubt it... If you want a plastic fantastic with poor ergonomics and color you always have to finish in post, then Panasonic is in the dust bin. If you want a robust pro tool that has top of the line color, resolution and contrast, excellent comfort and customization options, then you'll buy the S1 (with the added benefit of keeping most KZbinr wannabes away from it and thus from ruining excellent photographic features with their constant complaints, at least for the s1r)

Not an ideal travel camera that´s for sure, but it feels awesome when you hold it. In the end I think the weight of a full frame body is negligible, cos paired with most bigger lenses the body isn´t really the problem. The grip of the body though is much more important and thats where the likes of XT3 and even the A7iii just wouldn´t do it for me personally.
