To me, being able to de-rig the FP and put it in my pocket to always carry with me with some tiny leica-m adapted manual lens.. That's priceless. Yes, maybe the S1H is more of a film-making monster and it's all around better as long as you don't care about raw (which I do), but in my mind, the portability and the fact that Sigma has nothing to protect, so they'll keep making this camera as good as they can with no regard to other existing higher-tear models.. Pretty good. The day Sigma makes a tiny EVF module (something like the ones in the RX100s) and not that eyepiece shit that they try to get you to use.. It'll be a good day. Kinda bummed that they didn't make a hinge for the screen, I don't think it would've been that big a deal and it makes such a massive difference to tilt it or not.

The Panasonic S1H has a AA filter and the Sigma FP does not. The difference seems obvious even on KZbin. S1H smoother (more cinematic in my opinion) FP sharper with crisper fine details (it may moire on fine patterns) Even though there is move away from AA filters in high res cameras they are an important component, for example the Alexa employs a very expensive AA filter that is a significant factor in the success its “look”. Losing the AA filter drops the cost in lower end cameras. Great video really enjoy your shooting and grading.

The Alexa and Panasonic Varicams and now the S1H use an AA filter, and I agree it really helps the look. It's funny how the Alexa at 3k is still a contender. Color fidelity is more important than resolution ;)

actually the fp still has less detail without the aa filter, because of the fact that it uses pixel binning and line skipping for the 4k raw recordings.

pixelatorNYC oops, I confused the 4K mode you talked about with the fp’s line skipped 1080p raw mode. It’s still the raw signals from the sensor, the 14 years old panavision genesis was able to output a 1080p raw signals out of its Sdi port pixel binning it’s 5k sensor, and the Nikon z6 also outputs pixel binned line skipped raw.

Michael Bornman hue masks are awesome when combined with shape masks. Also, cleaning up your blacks using a Luma curve and dropping off the the shadow side helps too.

I'm not sure what software you use, but as far as color grading, Davinci Resolve is really good for that. You can qualify out skin tones so you can preserve them and edit them separately from the rest of the scene.

Great video! The raw sells me hard core on this. The thought of getting movie quality video, which the couch shot is worlds better to me than the s1h, is huge. My mind says yes go for the one with the better image and let's kit it out like it's a cinema rig, but at the end of the day, I'd get a lot more done with the S1H... so that's probably the smart choice right now. But hey, we don't always have to make smart choices!

I don't know why i'm always hoping you'll say I'm Spenser Sakurai the last Samauri 😎🤦🏾‍♀️ Buut i digress, personally i'd go for the S1H. Both produce good images but i need more than that in a camera now. Eventually an upgrade would need to be made for various reasons and Panasonic has better re- sale value than Sigma cameras. I'm wondering if it's KZbin compression but did you notice any noise when filming the coffee sequence? The blacks also looked a bit crushed in your hat and shirt when on the couch. It makes me think that no matter how great an image from a camera- or talented Cinematographer like yourself- if the final delivery is a compressed platform like KZbin and not broadcast there's no need for new filmmakers to stress over which camera to choose. Love your videos though, would be great to see a colour grading tutorial!

IMO, the better the image is, the harder it is for KZbin to break it. Go and watch some Arri Alexa footage in 480p and you’ll be amazed! 😮 It’s not a mathematical problem, I think it’s because the higher quality cameras look more natural and realistic, so it gets more difficult to distract our eyes with artifacts. That’s just my theory anyway. Maybe others can respond too.

To judge the image quality of the cameras I would need an actual dynamic range test, like you sitting in the shade while in the background there is a large window with details outside like houses or clouds. Then several single steps of under/over/correct exposure - so its not just you talking about dynamic range, but actually seeing it. also it would be great to see some of the postproduction work, for example just some example shots that are under/overexposed and how easy it is to pull the info back to correct. also when pushing the colors (hard), how well the image holds up - especially when the lighting is NOT perfect. if the lighting is perfect (like it is with yours ;) ) almost every camera with a decent lens these days will look great. to me, real cinematic cameras have the image quality that holds up to extreme color pushing, are relatively easy to save from under/overexposure and have color and grain consistency in higher ISO/ASA - that and the usability and reliability make them so expensive. most of this wasn`t included in this video, you just talked about it. just some feedback :)

I’ve had the FP for a couple of weeks now. I’ve been experimenting in stills mode, haven’t shot any video yet. I’m a happy BMPCC 4K owner. I prefer the FP footage to the Panasonic in your video. However, the FP is full of compromises and quite a few bugs/unfinished features. Going back to CDNG from BRAW is going to be tough for me. Thanks for the great comparison.

You're getting much better colours out of the Sigma at 5:30. Maybe the 10x more data is worth it? But I think Sigma has the advantage there in general, I find Panasonic colour lacking

Thanks for the video, in the intro some of the slow-motion shots have artefacts and noise. Where these shot on the S1H? And if so was it before the latest firmware update? Also I would like to ask, what's your thought on black bars for aspect ratios? I know some people consider it a fake aspect ratio but then again it does look kinda cinematic. Thanks keep it up

It's on KZbin. Almost certainly a KZbin problem.

Awesome work as always! The S1H seems substantially more usable as a camera, but the Sigma FP has an image that feels a lot more organic. That said, I don't think I could ever convince myself to shoot CDNG given the massive file sizes. Having shot with these more affordable full frame cameras for a while now, do either of them entice you away from the blackmagic cameras? I understand the draw of full frame, but I can't help but feel like the overall image quality out of the blackmagic cameras is superior, while still giving you practical-sized codecs and a nice usable experience on set. I am really curious about how you feel about that.

It may take a minute unless he has the Blackmagic recorder, and Atomos releases their end of the firmware for ProRes Raw. And DaVinci doesn’t support PRR.

Cheeky troll. I like it. Thanks for the comparison! The S1H and 400Mbps 5.9K image just looks so good. It suffers a bit from Panasonic’s temporal compression but it offers a clean image if that’s what you want. I think it’s going to be a cult camera. I’ve pretty much settled on any camera I buy must have weather sealing and IBIS, because those are important to me. Really wish Olympus would take video more seriously.

The image difference is negligible, both seem great but me owning an SH1 for the extra price it’s with it..by the time you kit out the sigma the price is basically the same if not more if you include media. Not to mention IBIS is a dream!

Hey loved this video and my buddy has the Sigma FP camera, would it be possible to link or mention all the accessories used in your friends setup to share with other Sigma users? Thank you Spenser great video! I got the cameras right! Only reason I got the cameras right was because I have had time to work with the Sigma FP and you can just tell the quality and look of the image thats coming from the Sigma, thats one thing thats nice is it does have a very certain look that just makes it easy to tell it apart. But also a note on it needing light, I feel like any camera does very well when it has the right amount of light for the shot. But that being said the Panasonic is a beast of a camera! Would you say its the new work horse of hybrid cameras?

Outdated review. Sigma fp with firmware 2 has playback of CDNG Raw. You use a small Samsung t5 2Tb and you can then just work off the T5 with Davinci Resolve and convert to BRAW to store on a hard drive if one wants. Have not had any problems with recording or lock up.

I think that the BM pocket 4k is probably a better deal than the Sigma FP right now, but you sacrifice full frame for a crop. I'm really torn between them, but might just wait for the firmware to mature on this and see if the price comes down or more used cameras appear on ebay at a reduced cost.

S1H - V-Log color is fantastic, temporal noise reduction kills of texture and creates smearing/ghosting FP - Color is meh but no processing artifacts, color can be corrected anyway. Still on the verge of selling my S1H

The S1H is a definitely a game changer for professional video production. Are people even aware how much actually NO ONE AND THEIR MOTHER, CATS AND DOGS WANTS THIS CAMERA? I am working in Hong Kong and you simply cannot give the Sigma FP cameras away of your lofe depended on it, no joke! You can literally find these EVERYWHERE on second-hand camera shops and dealers.. I mean everywhere! Sold like new for pennies on the dollar most of them in original box just a couple months old.. or weeks. Some go for much less than half of original price in 100% new condition, all papers and new warranty included. Basically, new or used, no one wants to get close to them. I really wonder why or what's really happening with these cameras.. surely they can't be that bad.. or actually are they? Quite frankly, I knew from the first second that Sigma announcement it that it would be a flow.. is too small, full of quirks and compromises, misses on features that everyone wants (some of them very obvious and basic), uses a lens mount for which natively there are almost no lenses.. the list goes on. But as a concept, I always thought Sigma was bold and courageous. I've been thinking to get one for myself just to try it out.

Prores Raw is not Raw. It's just another compressed format. The S1H has better DR but it doesn't record CDNG. My PC plays CDNG even 6K in real time and so does my pc laptop so it is not a negative.

ProResRaw is more like a smaller version of ProRes4444, not a compressed codec like h65

I did feel the footage of the FP had a very clean but rich quality to it where the Panasonic footage was a tad bit soft and mushy with the overall color rendition. Native ISO of Sigma FP is 100... dynamic range drops off a little away from that. I'm also finding it seems to do really well when you exposure compensate DOWN in some scenarios. Much better than the S1H, which is better than the FP compensating UP. edit: Sigma FP firmware seems to clip the noise floor at native before it breaks up so maybe a firmware update will release this. I think they were aiming for as perfect an image as possible at native but they should release the floor to let us decide how much noise is acceptable in the super dark shadow details.

Great video! I would wait until you try the ZCam F6; it has the same sensor as the S1H, with the same dynamic range 14+ stops, but a full cinema camera. ZCam is coming out with compressed Raw, like BRaw & REDCode; not sure if it will be available when the F6 ships, but they've been working on it for more than a year. The ZCam S6 is also a camera to consider, because it is cheaper, at 2500, unlike the ZCam F6 at 5000, but the S6 has a Super35 sensor and less dynamic range. Since you like, use and own BlackMagic cameras, they will be releasing new cameras soon; an 8k camera, but also an improved Ursa G2. Could BlackMagic release a 14/16bit Raw (BRaw), 16+stops of dynamic range, 4:4:4, 4k cinema camera? Shut up, it's my fantasy.

What do you think of the new sigma fp firmware update? Has it made the frames a bit smoother going 29fps now? i was put off by how jumpy it was when i played with it orignally.

Great insight for this cameras, I personally wasn’t interested or heard very much on both of them, but this widen my knowledge. Btw, do you think you can bring the Mavo LF again and do some tests, I’m very interested to see that camera more.
