Thanks for this video, for me personally the cooling fan, ability to record 120p with audio and the price for a kit with 20-60mm lens are making the s5ii very attractive. The only things I prefer on the canon are less rolling shutter in 4K, and familiarity as I’ve had canon cameras before.

When testing autofocus and IBIS you should be using identical lenses if possible, as internal lens autofocus will effect the final image performance. Also, the Panasonic 5SII has firmware compatibility with only a few Lumix lenses. So make sure the lenses you are testing with have firmware compatibility with the 5SII. In the next couple of months all Lumix lenses will have firmware compatibility with the 5SII, but the lens firmware will need to be upgraded. ( this is why some reviewers ONLY used the Lumix 20-60mm lens for their reviews because the lens firmware had been updated for the 5SII camera )

Nice fair review. I'd have liked some more monitor captures/recordings. I tried one, I liked it, but it is just too bulky and the CIPA seems really low! It is the first ML camera that I didn't run out of custom buttons! That is HUGE! I'm a Nikon guy (worst customization btw,) using an A7C for now because of all of the excellent f2.8 Tamron zooms in Sony mount. I'd also MUCH prefer 30-33mp for stills. I would have liked to have seen a few JPG comparisons just for kicks. The R7 seemed to have soft JPG's with a (too) cooler tint than the (too) warmer RAW/CR3 images.

Great video! Also, Sony and Panasonic are great at also making functional, easy to use and sturdy side doors for cameras (the ones for the ports). Whereas Canon and Nikon are still in the 2000s, doing sh*tty flappy rubbery doors, that hang from a single point. Simply awful!

Great video. They are both good cameras. As someone who primarily shoots real estate video, I use the Panasonic S5, which has a similar aps-c crop in 4K 60fps as the S5 MK II, combined with the Canon EF-S 10-18 lens. For me, personally, the extra one-stop-plus of dynamic range and the flexibility of Panasonic's V-LOG is great, and the fact that the S5 / S5 II has MORE dynamic range in aps-c crop mode at 4K 60p than the R6 II in full frame at 4K 60p... well... I am a bit surprised about the green shift you encounted shooting with the S5 II, but a lot of that might have to do with the lens(es) you shot with. By that, I mean that all of the various lenses I shoot on my Panasonic S5 (Native Panasonic lenses, Minolta MD lenses, Minolta AF lenses, Sony A-Mount lenses, Canon EF and EF-S lenses) all have different color shifts when using the same camera settings. Also, if anything, V-LOG has a reputation for shifting magenta in the highlights.

Great video as always. My only issue was the autofocus test. If you just leave the settings on default then thats really not an accurate representation of the cameras true performance. Fantastic video, Josh! I just wish Canon would add DCI 4K to the R6 II in a firmware update. I know that feature doesn't matter to a lot of people, but to some it is important (especially for cropping to the 2.35 aspect ratio). That would sway me to buy the R6 II and then eventually the R5 II (to use together for weddings, etc).
@Josh_Sattin
@Josh_Sattin Жыл бұрын
Thanks Kirk! Glad you like the video. Yeah, adding DCI would be sweet. I kind of seeing them holding that back from the R6II and only offering it in the R5 and up though.
@KirkDapo
@KirkDapo Жыл бұрын
@@Josh_Sattin Yeah, I agree with you that this is Canon's strategy for video, unfortunately. For me, the R6 II would be the ideal gimbal cam because of it's light weight, good auto focus, and full-readout 4K 60p. And then the R5 line would be the perfect A cam. So it would be helpful to have DCI with both, just like the Panasonic S5/S1/S1H (all have DCI/C4K). The full sensor 60p of the R6 II is actually pretty amazing in the market right now. I'm a long time/current Panasonic user (S5, S1), but I won't buy another cropped 4K 60p camera in 2023 and beyond. Here's hoping that Panasonic can deliver an S1 update with no more 4K 60p crop! But if Canon just added things like All-i recording and DCI to the "lowly" R6 II, they'd appeal even more to video shooters and I'm guessing they'd sell even more cameras. Come on Canon!
@philiciencasimir8015
@philiciencasimir8015 10 ай бұрын
Adding DCI 4k in the R6 II will only crop a larger portion in the top and the bottom in the sensor. That is something that you can do in post with a proper sequence. So it will be more beneficial to shoot in 16:9.
@KirkDapo
@KirkDapo 10 ай бұрын
@@philiciencasimir8015 Not true. DCI 4k is 4096 x 2160 instead of the standard (16:9 UHD) 4k which is 3840 x 2160. So there would be a gain in horizontal resolution with DCI 4k. Since the R6 II is a 24 megapixel sensor (and it can shoot 6k raw), we know that DCI 4k without a crop is possible.

If you own anything with a crop sensor, it’s just like recording in 60k with a default 1.5x crop.. wouldn’t the solution be getting a wider lens? Btw, Under low light conditions, non-static shooting (running, walking), the S5IIX destroys its competitors. Also being able to record externally to an SSD is one of the best features to have!! I was going for a R6 M2 until canon confirmed that only they will be making lenses. It sucks for people wanting EF/EF-S lenses because it’s only going to drive up demand for those lenses until canon releases more R-Series lenses. The lower end R-Lenses are cheap in quality.. Sony & LUMIX do a better job when it comes to 3rd party lens selection and quality.

Okay fair enough. but if I remember right, there we other reviews which were similar. Having said that. I can’t imagine for their review why they would use one on a standard picture type profile profile, then have another using Log which would need the Rec 709 conversion. Whatever setting they used on the R6II, did not look good for noise. One thing for sure, is the standard picture profiles on most of these cameras have a lot on NR, the S5II is no different (more than the S5). If anything, I’d like to see Panasonic allow an option in the firmware that would allow us to remove more of the NR and sharpening added to the “standard type” profiles.

I don't know about that. Sony has been doing pretty good where lens is concerned. They have an extensive lens series, I'm not saying canon doesn't. Canon has so many lens mounts and very little reverse compatibility. But when it come to the body, picking the right camera these days it's getting difficult, they are all just really good now, it just comes down to your use case.

thanks for such a great and detailed comparison, i desperately looked into your channel regarding the same comparison but with Panasonic S5 IIX as there we have prores, i am at the moment completely confused which one to buy as they are at the moment the same price but canon has 4k at 60fps FF and lumix have 6k 24fps Cropped with better dynamic range. Got to make a decision in 2 days any suggestion would be much appreciated. PS: i am video and photographer.

@batchmatch

@@Josh_Sattin So i wrote some important points down on a paper for myself like this= R6 II: good AF, better low light and 60 fps FF vs. S5 IIx: pro res, slightly better dynamic range and shutter angle (i personally don't care about opengate or full hdmi port and the other hypes around S5 IIx). But honestly that prores is not that important for me to sacrifice 60 fps at ff. But then there is this 40 min limit regarding overheating issue as i watched your other video. In a middle of a wedding i can't turn the camera off for 10 min till it gets cold 😅atst i can't risk it losing shots at 30 fps if there is any action going on or if i need slow motion. So i am kinda stuck between these comprises. It's like you know A7SIII is the final answer but bcs of that high price tag and the fact that it's not even available mostly in eu, i got to somehow deal with. Too much said but here is my solution 😄and i really like to know your thoughts on this: I was like i can not make S5 IIx gets 60 fps ff at 4k by any means, but i can solve R6 II overheating issue with using atomos (not to also mention here i get raw prores as well) and expose my footages better to compensate that lower dynamic range as i mostly suffer from harsch highlights as i am mostly outside video/photographer.

The fact that you said the canon r6 ii is only slightly better then the s5 ii is impressive for Panasonic. It definitely makes me feel better about picking up the s5ii. Because that was one thing I was worried about, the autofocus. I don’t need perfect autofocus, just decent autofocus that you can take a picture or capture video that’ll be mostly in focus. And so far, I’m happy that I switch from Fuji to Panasonic. I still love Fuji, taut that auto focus just can be so aggravating at the times.

@@Josh_Sattin i honestly think the canon r6ii is a better camera overall. The only reason why I chose the s5ii over the r6ii was the lens line up. Obviously Sony wins with the versatility of their 1st party and 3rd party options. But canon only has 1st party lenses. And although canons glass is probably amazing and worth every penny, I’m not doing this professionally, so it’s nice to have some 3rd party options to get decent optics at a decent price. If canon would’ve let tamron and sigma make lenses on their rf lenses, I probably would’ve gone with the canon. The s5ii just seemed like the best compromise between canon and Sony, while still be affordable.

S5 ii is a great camera which now but it's the same price as Sony a7iv now in some locations (Sony is getting cheaper or gets on sale as it's older now). So the Panasonic is losing the price advantage. And Sony has more and cheaper lenses so in the end we end up paying more for Panasonic system. Also there is many more Sony second hand lenses. Canon RF lenses are even more expensive so Canon would be the most expansive system when also considering lenses price. If Panasonic is a more expensive system than Sony it should be better to justify the extra price. Is it? Or is it better to go for A7 iv which is around the same price and will allow you to save money on lenses.

@@Josh_Sattin can't wait. It would be interesting to hear your ideas on buying into Panasonic vs Sony ecosystem as a whole. Canon RF is too much to justify for me as I'm a non professional. Here are some thoughts: I don't have a full frame camera at the moment. I want to switch to full frame for better landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street and travel photography and start with video too. S5 II sells for 2300 or 2500 (kit) in Switzerland. Sony a7 IV sells for 2000 or 2200 (kit) at it's cheapest offer in the spring sale. But normally they cost around the same price these days in many regions in Europe. So if comparing it to a7 IV and the price is not a differentiator, is S5 II better? Considering ecosystem, cheap lenses, other available Sony bodies as upgrade paths. 33mpix. Second hand market. I still like the ergonomy, display, video options and IBIS of s5 II better. But it's the only phase detect camera which Panasonic has. So there is nothing to upgrade to at the moment..if you don't like it you're stuck with L mount lenses on the only body with phase detect that Panasonic has. I want to order S5 II with 20-60 mm and then get more lenses. However, I'm not sure it's a rational decision long term considering the Sony and E-mount ecosystem as a competition. On the other hand if I get a7 IV I'm worried I'll be regretting it every time when I see the low res screen of the a7IV and it's IBIS performance. As an amateur, handheld video means a lot to me.

Genuine professional filmmakers and videographers, those guys who use video or cine cameras for their day-to-day bread and butter, never, I repeat, NEVER use auto-focus in their work. The reason is very simple: every single action shooting MUST be 100% tack sharp on the subjects which, by today's latest technology, none of the existing auto-focus hybrid cameras offer. ALL of them are just "prosumer" photo/video tools. Therefore, until autofocus technology does not offer absolute ZERO lag in autofocusing, the only way to achieve the level of flawless sharpness expected from professional work is doing it manually. This is why 100% of all Hollywood and around the world professional films and videos are made by manual focus only cameras and they cost, even the less expensive ones, more than the most "advanced" prosumer cameras such as the R6 II and the S5 II discussed on this video. Furthermore, not a single professional video camera is hybrid. Thus, every self-called videographer, like yourself, who criticizes the auto-focus performance of any given camera for professional work, is not really a videographer. Think about a professional car racer. None of them would corner the track tack timely with a hybrid shock absorber set, so so good for racing, so so good for the streets. A last note, the hybrid Lumix S1H has earned Netflix seal of approval for video shootings but, mind you, it is by and large used as a "B", back-up camera in most cases and solely through manual focusing. Its autofocus sucks.
