I have several years of experience in Audio/Video and I tried the same comparision between the 820 and the 9000 with a high-end chain inside a dark room. If you correctly fine tune the two players, the difference in the video quality is absolutely very little or even not noticeable. The big difference is only in the analog audio section, where the 9000 greatly outperform the 820. So, the choice is very simple: if you connect the player to your AVR only using the HDMI connector, you can go for the 820 without any regret, but if you need to connect the player to the AVR using the analog connections, the 9000 has absolutely to be your choice.

Im thinking of grabbing the 820 now, and upgrading to the 9000 in a few months. The 820 can then live in my bedroom where my audio demands aren't as severe. I don't even have the speaker set up I want to stream music with set up in my main room yet so I dont see the point. I do wish that the 9000 had an HDMI input though, Id like to be able to use its up conversion with other devices.

In the 4k Non HDR comparison, the 9000 seemed brighter, more washed out. The 820 had more vibrant colors. The 'with HDR' comparison, you showed darker scenes so the 9000 ended up being the better picture, 820 was harder to see as it was darker. Differences that can probably only be noticed in a side by side comparison. Seems both models are excellent.

In my opinion I think I"m seeing the 9000 give a better picture, if as you suggest this is an apples to apples test. The 9000 has a bigger area of detail, if you look at the walls where Gru is you'll see alot more detail behind him. The bright light above the little blue guy thing is supposed to be a spot light and that scene works better on the 9000, more spectacular detail and more shadow detail. Hands down the 9000 is the clear winner of this test and it should be, it's twice the price. You shouldn't be paying twice the price for features only you should get better performance and you do with the 9000.

Question: does the tank build of the UB9000 result in a more quiet player? There are reviews where the 820/824 are rather noisy (drive/fan) when playing quiet parts of a movie.
@TechinaSec101
@TechinaSec101 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, correct the UB9000 is a quieter player then the 820/824, but in saying that, with a player of this price i would suspect you have a hometheater to go with it and even in quiet parts, the player will not be a distraction, but if you are sitting close to the player then yes you will hear the fan/driver noise. but not a deal breaker at all.

I have given up buying expensive Blu Players especially having paid a Grand for a Panasonic that broke down after 13 months which was 1 month after the guarantee had run out. I then replaced that with a Sony that cost £350 that lasted 3 years before it broke down and then brought another Sony for £69 in a sale on Amazon which originally retailed at £119. I have had it now for over 5 years and is it still runs as good as the day I brought it brand new. It even has more features and Blu Ray discs load a lot faster than the other two that cost way more money. As for it's picture and sound quality it's exactly the same as the more expensive models that broke down in no time at all. The only thing you are getting for your money by paying more for a blu ray player is the build quality and nothing more. As for anything else you are wasting your money. If you want a nice quiet draw, and something that looks good then spend your money on that. But if you just want a good picture and sound quality and do not mind a bit of plastic and how big the player is. You can get the the same for a tenth of the price. If you think you are getting some better Laser inside the one that costs a grand, you are very much mistaken, at the end of day the Lasers inside them are no better than the ones that come in an Optical Drive you can buy for your Desktop Computer for 20 bucks. If a cheap player breaks down, you can easily replace it. But when something that costs a Grand breaks down after 13 months.That is a kick in the teeth and my new name for Panasonic is PanaChronic :)))))))). I believe their motto is Ideas For Life. What a fucking JOKE LOL I would not buy another one of their products ever again.

Owning an OPPO UDP-205 and recently purchasing the Panasonic ub9000, I was amazed that no mention was made of the clunky OS in the ub9000. The screen saver can only be enabled of disabled, but you cannot set a minimum time before it activates? Colour is noticeably richer on the UB820! Black level noticeably deeper as well. Having said that, there is noticeably more detail, especially in background on the 9000, which appears to be due to the fact it is visibly brighter as well. Most experts agree that colour and black levels are more important than amount of fine detail that can be seen.

@@jmp6943 Fingerstyle Worship your eyes cannot pick up differences through KZbin filmed with a camera because of the camera exposure. I found the following comment under another KZbin review for the UB9000 where the poster claims the sound quality difference during movie playback of the UB9000 vs. the UB820 was "astounding": "Randy Norris Randy Norris 11 months ago I recognize that this video was posted almost 2 years ago but I thought I would add some thoughts since I just bought the 9000. I have a JVC X790R 4k pixel shifting projector. I had the Panasonic dp-ub820 and I moved that to pair with my Sony Z9D. I was not expecting much of a change because both players have the same video processing chip set but wow I was wrong. The audio quality differences during movie playback are astounding! Now I did expect some improvement in sound quality but the player far exceeded my expectations in that regard. But the video quality truly blew me away - the extra ability to adjust the HDR roll off by selecting the basic luminance projector made a huge difference - far more than I expected! And on the other side the 820 does a fabulous job in the room with the Z9D. I hope these observations help someone." END OF RANDY'S QUOTE. Hi, I have worked with Panasonic directly and the video quality is EXACTLY the same, they use the same chipset and HDMI board etc. Most likely he didn't update the UB820 and the UB9000 came with the latest update, Reason why I say that is he stated the UB9000 you could change the HDR roll-off, that feature is available in the UB820. As for Audio if he is using analog then yes the UB9000 is better however if you are using the audio by HDMI ( which the majority of people would do ) the UB820 and UB9000 is EXACTLY the same. Also if you don't need balanced output etc. that's why the majority of the population will only use HDMI for both audio and video. the UB820 will perform the same as the UB9000 and leave more cash in your pocket.

I'm pretty sure the 820 & 9000 are still the only 4K players on the U.S. market that support both DV & HDR10+; Panasonic also offers the UB450 in Europe but it's not available here. Ironically, AFAIK the only U.S. TV brand that supports both across its entire line is Vizio, definitely nowhere near as premium as Panasonic. (Hisense, even lower on the food chain than Vizio, offers both on its midrange & high-end models but is short of similarly priced Vizios on other features.)

I've come to ignore much of the "real vs. fake 4K" arguments. Even with a 2K DI, Hollywood movies still tend to have a wider color palette than SDR and thus will benefit from even HDR10; I've always felt HDR is a greater benefit of 4K formats than 4K itself.

I just wondered how Panasonic's two machines measure up to the Pioneer UDP LX 800. The reason I ask is that I own a lot of SACD and DVD Audio discs which isn't catered for by the Panasonic machines. I disagree with your conclusion: in HDR mode the 9000 is slightly better but in 4K non hdr mode the 9000 is A LOT better. The 820, in comparison has an evident crush in the lower lights, hidin details of the image. Colours are less natural more "pumped", the whole frame is less natural than the 9000 with a lot of details missing. Stand alone the 820 has a very nice picture but vs the 9000 there's no story. Don't be fooled by the "commercial" looks of innatural contrast/colours: the more "pop" is in fact a boosted contrast like the one you see in big stores to attract people but has nothing to do with a "perfect" image rendering.

Nice comparisons. On the non-HDR 4K sample, the 820 clearly had an edge over the 9000. Its image had more pop with better color saturation. To my eyes, the 4K HDR samples looked pretty much the same so the $500 US or so extra cost of the 9000 is not justified unless the additional audio capabilities of the 9000 are a must (or you want the solid tank-like build that the Oppo 203 and 205 have). Question: When you ran the HDR clips did you use the HDR Optimizer? If so what were your impressions of it?
@TechinaSec101

Hi, thank you for your comment, we ran two HDR clips, one was normal HDR and the other was HDR with the Optimizer set to " light environment " what i could say is that it does improve the PQ quality especially when your display dosnt have the 1000nits for HDR and for Projectors i think its a game changer.

REALLY upset that a superb player like this Panasonic doesn't have zoom control, like all the Oppos do. But those Oppo dopes omitted allowing you to move and center the zoomed image on the screen. My JVC XV-NA70BK DVD player from 2004 can do that with ease. Zoom controls allow more intimate control over content and really adds to the fun. The least Panasonic should do for a player at this price is to add this feature via a firmware, but they probably wouldn't do so even if they could.

Since I always use Sony I haven't seen the zoom feature since dvd player times. But I am looking at this machine as I think the Dolby vision switching is automatic, do you know? On the ubpx800m2 you got to change it manually. Like you need to know in advance if it's Dolby vision so you can turn it on. But if you leave it on for everything else the contrast and brightness isn't right. So obviously you for to go in and change it to off or on according to which disc you want to play. It's not a huge deal though but would rather not have to go into the settings so much

I thought the 9000 always revealed more when the 820 would display those areas darker. More detail. But in the end...if you're not viewing the two players side by side you'd never know what was missed or better. I say save they money. Get the 820. Just as when some one compared Audio QUest's and Amazon's HDMI 2.1 cables...difference WAS noticeable...but if you're not comparing them...you'd be happy with the cheaper Amazon branded cable. :) A lot of "video tech" is marketing. Improvement negligible. Usually 10-15%. Almost never justifying the doubling of the asking price for the higher-end player. Most products are of high enough quality today that getting a mid-range model would suffice. Even entry-level models...they just lack the odd gimmick feature...

How is this possible? HDMI Cable periodic noise and loss of information I would have switched the HDMI cables or the players and reran the Demos, yes Inferior cables can make a superior player look worse than a inferior player as I have discovered for my self. What is periodic noise? Periodic noises are signal independent but spatially dependent noises that corrupt digital images by adding periodically or quasi-periodically distributed repetitive patterns when external interferences occur during image acquisition/transmission.

I run a pair of REL subs and the west coast sales rep(very knowledgeable guy) suggest I go digital out from the tv(or I guess the 820 would work too) to my dedicated dac and let tbe dac do the conversion since a dedicated dac is far superior than any TV or 4k player on tbe market could ever be. I think this is the way to go. Implementing a AV reciever means I'd have to put a switch to tell my 2 two towers snd 2 subs(all active) to recieve either my pre or av. So gonna try the digital to dac option and see if I can get 2 my channel system to compete with av multiple channel option. But was curious how you ended up liking yours.
