Great job vencent , I understand that the Panasonic has a little better picture quality , but the oppo does better in Dolby vision mode so it seems, one killer feature that oppo has if you have a anamorphic lense projector is the stretch feature taking a letter box movie and turning it into full screen without losing any of the picture, I rip my Blu-rays and just started to rip my 4k movies and the oppo plays mkv files with Atmos and DTX incredible movie server . The oppo will also play a BDMV file which is un heard of .

@12:33 I think both the companies have made a choice. The oppo has chosen to adjust the specular highlights of the bright areas of any scene to be displayed as close as they can to original intended picture, whereas the Panasonic has chosen to prioritize to display the less brighter areas of a scene like the buildings in this scene. Therefore, you can see buildings much clearer in the Panasonic. The reason behind it may be that both the companies' processors have different algorithms to decide what part of a particular scene is important for the viewers. For me, I'd rather prefer the Panasonic in this scene, whereas maybe for you, the Oppo is preferable. It really comes down to personal preference, but it actually is a sad state that even after spending huge money first on a display, then on a player, you still don't get the best picture that is possible.

KHILADI but the thing is that those companies do not have a choice when it comes to Dolby. Dolby decides how the tone mapping is being done.
@marcuscole8796
@marcuscole8796 5 жыл бұрын
@@sledgehamma Fully agreed ... players are not allowed to modify the HDR10 and the dynamic meta data stream in case of DV-playback ! Their task is to provide the stored data 1:1 to the tv ... the tv is the only equipment which calibrated for DV-reproduction and doing the tone mapping. The ONLY point where modification is allowed is during mastering on the studio monitor. Even the tv is not allowed to modify the provided data...for perfect reproduction. Therefore this not a matter of preferences at all...

Vincent, is the dynamic tone mapping on the Panasonic players still relevant in 2023? Say for the LG G3, Sony A95L and so on. I'd be great with a 4K UHD Blu-ray player update, considering that Panasonic has not come out with a new player since these, despite that TVs have evolved quite a bit.

Anyone going straight from a bluray player into active monitors with XLR's is making life hard for themselves. It is supposed to go through some sort of pre-amp first, really. It double up as a CD player, not a Cd player/pre amp. If anything its more Hifi/passive speaker orientated. But i get your point, love your work.

Can we get an update on the elevated brightness in DV from the Panasonic??? Has a firmware update helped? Has the company responded? Some people are investing a lot of time and money into a high end modern entertainment system. More and more UHD Blu Rays with DV are coming out and I don't understand why incorrect DV is not a bigger deal in the community. In fact, why isn't this a bigger deal to Vincent? I'm sure he knows that not every enthusiast has or should have a discontinued Oppo 203. And it seems that a few other players are having this issue as well. One of the main reasons for DV in the first place is to NOT lose detail in darker or brighter scenes... So how is this acceptable? I'm somewhat fine with the current limitations of the technology, like some instances of freezing or needing to clean a brand new disc. But Sony players not properly auto switching DV on/off and Panasonics displaying bright DV (of all things)... These little nit picks just seem like unnecessary shortcomings in this day and age.

The oppo 203 forced Dolby Vision mode really just fixes almost any issues with bad HDR10 discs for certain scenes (such as elevated blacks in certain scenes in Infinity War/ blown out highlights), less banding and better tone mapping for oleds. Another subtle thing is the oppo 203 just loads so much faster in comparison to the ub9000 if you just want it as a disc workhorse, honestly I was surprised the ub9000 was that much slower in this video. UB9000 seems like it has a really good HDR optimizer function but honestly the forced Dolby Vision has been giving me fantastic results after some serious testing. Would be interesting to see a comparison between the 2 functions on both players.

I can't figure out any combination of audio output settings that will allow me to hear audio on special features on my UB820 with a Marantz NR1506. No combination of Bitstream or PCM and secondary audio on/off/auto seems to do it. UPDATE: Turns out, the player needed a hard reboot to rectify this. An unplug, wait :30 and plug it back in. So simple, yet so elusive.

Noticed that weirdness with the DV on the Panny 820 vs the OPPO 203 back in January. Even when reducing the contrast on the TV you can't recover all the highlight detail that the Panny is clipping out in DV. Seeing as I've no use for broken DV in a player (lord knows it's broken enough in the ZD9 TV as it is!) I downgraded the 820 to a 420 and it has virtually all of the main picture quality features as the UB9000 for about an 8th of the price. UB9000 is the literal definition of a player for those who have more money than sense.

Hi-end XLR output but no hi-end SACD capability. Time for Panasonic to bring out a new flagship disc player. Cosmetically some sections of the interface feel very dated, and functionally it is very slow and my unit had some bugs that required firmware upgrades and several warranty repairs (CEC problems and randomly freezing up on music CDs and movie blurays, plus sometimes pushing a button on the front panel did nothing at all and I had to use the remote.) Hopefully there is still a viable market for high quality physical media players and Panasonic will soon release a new flagship, in this age where streaming has taken over.

Are you using an LG OLED ? ... I am asking because the here used Sony is not capable of standard Dolby Vision only the "Low Latency"-version. Maybe the Panasonic-player works as intended with standard Dolby Vision (LG tvs) and fails with the "Low Latency" or "player-led" version of DV (Sony tvs) ... Has there actually been a firmware update recently ? ... Vincent for sure used the latest version available in March. Besides this I am waiting for which DV-version Panasonic will implement in his new OLED-tvs later this year...

REALLY upset that a superb player like this Panasonic doesn't have zoom control, like all the Oppos do. But those Oppo dopes omitted allowing you to move and center the zoomed image on the screen. My JVC XV-NA70BK DVD player from 2004 can do that with ease. Zoom controls allow more intimate control over content and really adds to the fun. The least Panasonic should do for a player at this price is to add this feature via a firmware, but they probably wouldn't do so even if they could.

Best reviewer does it again. Looks like the Panasonic Engineers are taking influence from MadVR! The days of reference picture are over. Every player does their own tone mapping/ABL settings. Even the one that was supposed to be (DolbyVision) isn't. JVC's chief projector engineer on Home Theater Geeks predicted this about 2-3 years ago. That's why MadEnvy - an upcoming video processor - should be the best processor as you can customize every aspect, for every source.

10:48 - its very clear that the 9000 is outputting brighter - so no wonder using DolbyVision it blows out all the highlights. Hopefully they fix this in another iteration. Final thought - nice it has XLR / analog out, but it doesn't support SACD/DVD-Audio? My guess is only Audiophiles with higher end equipment will use the XLR outs. This was one of the main reasons to go with the Oppo 105, 205 series over the 103/203...and the justifiably higher cost of the player. Major fail on Panasonic's end. I really hope version 9001 will be a true universal player. That's the only reason i didn't purchase it. If they put out a universal version, i will immediately purchase it.

Excellent review... but no matter how much research i do, i can't seem to find info about any 4k player on "disc error reading" or "shock resistance" whatsoever! In the past i used to choose which player to buy based on its ability to read through coding errors and disc surface "niks"... not to mention shock and vibration to the unit itself! I remember buying my Technics SL-PD8 cd changer over 20 years ago strictly because it could read through any problem and survive my fist coming down hard on top of it while playing without skipping a beat or even having the audio buffer kicking in! I own a UB-820 which has a very hard time with imperfect discs like "First Blood" & "Color Out Of Space" (3 bought copies of each so far & all have problems with the Panasonic), yet no problems on my LG UBK80... except that the LG can't handle my 18" JBL Selenium subs during an explosion without skipping or freezing up... but the 820 can! I really want to own a UB9000, but not to be outperformed by a $100 LG player in these areas. Does anybody know anywhere or anyone on the net that still actually test these types of things on 4k players? Would really appreciate it. :-)

Which Dolby Vision mode was used on LG OLED? If Home Cinema then of course it's brighter, that's how it looks. The correct one is Cinema.

Vincent wouldn't have made such a basic mistake as that. And it wouldn't explain why the Dolby Vision output was noticeably brighter than the forced HDR10 output when toggling.

I wonder if the Panasonic exclusive features, if left on during DV playback affects the EOTF and or the tone mapping. They are meant to help out HDR10 content only, and problem is that, they are not being disabled once DV metadata is recognized by the player. If so, the fault belongs to Panasonic for not programming the player to automatically disable those features.
@marcuscole8796
@marcuscole8796 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, "this" might be an or the explanation... At least the UB9000 obviously is either modifying the basic HDR10 stream and/or the DV meta data. This seems to be a very obvious mistake resulting in a huge drawback ... which should have been noticed during development !? Nevertheless it should be possible to fix it with a firmware update ... besides that, especially after we are now month after release of the UB9000 ... this leaves a bitter aftertaste...

Before Oppo went off the market😭 they said that the Panny slightly edged out the Oppo in picture quality but, they did not support Dolby vision. Now that Panny supports Dolby I have no excuse not to get the Panny outside of the fact it was always my dream to get an Oppo.

Vincent, perhaps you can compare the same Dolby Vision clip from AppleTV and Sony UHD player against Oppo and Panasonic. As you suggest, they should all look the same on the same TV. Perhaps they are on different Dolby Vision Firmware?
@marcuscole8796
@marcuscole8796 5 жыл бұрын
Players do not need Dolby Vision firmware ... their only task in case of DV content is to read it and send it 1:1 to the DV-capable tv ... which does the job then. All DV-capable tvs get analysed and calibrated for DV-playback directly by and at Dolby Labs. ... tvs with the same panel will therefore (re)produce the identical picture (in the range of the production tolerances of the panels). It doesn't matter where they get the DV meta data from... In this case the UB9000 doesn't send the data 1:1 as it should, but modifies it first ... therefore the tv gets wrong data and produces a distorted picture (based on this wrong data).

IMPORTANT! the HDR optimizer will NOT work with every blu-ray! You still need an LG oled with active HDR for those blu-rays. Otherwise you lose specula highlight detail and sometimes the picture is too dark. Active HDR is incredible but when it works the HDR optimizer is better.

I HATE the nondefeatable autostandby on my Sony UBP-X800M2, and was hoping this is not an issue on the Panasonic DP-UB820. I was considering adding the Panasonic DP-UB820 to my system because of its HDR-to-SDR conversion while maintaining BT.2020 for daytime viewing of my 4K UHD Blu-ray collection and using my UBP-X800M2 for DVD-AUDIO and SACD. But considering (1) Panasonic's clipping of bright areas during Dolby Vision playback, (2) lack of Dolby Vision to SDR conversion, and (3) autostandby issues similar to the Sony, this means I would be spending $500 on only one feature of significance to me I would only use during the year when I can open my windows and don't have to run my heating or air conditioning. Is HDR-to-SDR with BT.2020 alone really worth $500? If it wasn't for this review, I might have pulled the trigger on the Panasonic DP-UB820 only to wind up using it between two and four months out of the year. I MIGHT get one if they're still available after I take care of some speaker placement issues, upgrade my AVR, and add some overhead speakers for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. But considering my situation, I think the Panasonic DP-UB820 should be the LAST thing I add to my system.

Hi Vincent. Thank you for this video. I just purchased the UB9000. Have you tested the Allien 4k disc? My UB9000 has a problem playing the scene where they remove John Hurt's helmet after the face hugger encounter. The image pixelates and glitches. It happens on the theatrical cut but worse on the Director's cut. The disc plays fine in my PS5. I was wondering if you had encountered this or heard anything about it? I have not noticed any other issues with the ub9000 playing discs yet. It plays my mad max fury road fine, my Sony ubp x800 always froze playing that disc. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.
