Global surveillance systems are ill-equipped to detect the first signals of an emerging infectious disease outbreak as the recent #covid-19 pandemic demonstrated.
New research suggests that surveillance for new zoonotic diseases should focus on humans rather than animals as is the current approach.
Existing data sources also provide an abundance of untapped information which should be explored for use in surveillance-with the advantage of being low cost and applicable to low-and-middle-income countries.
