New Covid Variant Omicron vs. Vaccines and Natural Immunity
Based on some recent studies, it looks like Omicron has difficulty getting past our body's T-cells.
In test-tube studies, researchers in South Africa exposed copies of the virus to T cells taken from people who received either the Pfizer Vaccine or the Johnson and Johnson vaccine or those who had not been vaccinated but had developed immunity from a previous covid infection. This study concluded that T-cell immunity to Omicron from either natural immunity of the prior infection or vaccines is well-preserved.

---------------------------------------------------------
Based on a study published in the NEJM, 2 shots of the Pfizer vaccine prevent most people from being hospitalized with the Omicron variant of COVID.
The data shows that the effectiveness of two-doses against Omicron did slightly drop compared to delta but overall remains effective at about 70% at preventing covid hospitalizations.
Yes, Omicron has been found in several studies to cause many more infections in vaccinated and boosted and, of course, those who are unvaccinated as well.
In South Africa, most of the hospitalizations occurred among the unvaccinated.
The rates of Covid hospitalization during the Omicron timeframe were lower than the delta timeframe. Hospitalization rates were anywhere from 2-to-6 times lower during the Omicron period, depending on age.
Why is this the case?
There are 2 main factors at play.
One is that there are higher vaccination rates during the omicron timeframe.
Two, the lower average age of those becoming infected during the omicron timeframe means young adults make up a higher percentage of hospitalizations than before.
So these two factors are known as confounding variables that muddies the water when trying to figure out if Omicron is truly a milder infection than delta.
So is the Omicron variant itself less dangerous than delta?
Even as we enter 2022, that is unclear.

Please do better research before making your videos, the rate of hospitalization is more in lower age group as over all the lower age group is vaccinated less. But if you look at absolute proportions the numbers are quite similar in both the cases, i.e. % of people vaxed and % of people who were hospitalised in the lower age group is approx 34-35%.

How come when efficacy drops, doctors don't quote numbers anymore, except when it's very advantageous (e.g.from quoting protection from infection percentage, to quoting protection from hospitalization)...initial efficacy numbers were heralded...be honest, do he same thing now, don't insert "politics" into your videos and don't self-censor for "public-policy" reasons either. You could have told us the full numbers, you didn't..this is exactly the behavior that breeds mistrust for vaccines. If medical professionals didn't do "policy" but just quoted numbers/research data, we'd be in a better place.

The Pfizer study is more of an advertisement in my opinion. Unvaccinated people in South Africa (SA) were able to fight off the severe effects of Omicron, also. Only 26% of SA are vaccinated. SA was the first country hit with the wave of Omicron and the country had minimal hospitalization and their hospital data and reporting system are solid. Current SA and UK research of the Omicron variant indicates this variant causes less severe symptoms than the Delta in vaccinated and non-vaccinated people.

My best friend is unvaccinated and has natural immunity. His experience with omicron was like having a mild cold. He recovered fully in 2 and a half days, maybe 3 days. When he got covid in 2020, his experience was like having a bad cold. And he was never hospitalized or anything. Took him 5 days to recover from that. This is why vaccination should always remain a choice, and not enforced by coercive force via mandates (which are not laws).

South Africa is only 27% fully vaccinated. You can't ignore natural immunity at the end of your video when mentioning the two reasons (other than Omicron being milder) that the hospitalization rates have gone down in South Africa. You even mention the studies showing the level of T cells post infection earlier in the video. The Omicron wave peaked under 70 deaths (could climb a little higher) a day in South Africa compared to over 800 a day in January of last year, and the Omicron wave had more cases! It's good news no matter what!

There have now been studies from both Scotland and England too that show Omicron results in much fewer hospitalisations, shorter hospital stay duration, and less severe instances whilst in the hospital (less ICU and ventilation patients). So the mildness of the disease seems to be the case not only in South Africa's young population but in the west too, at least according to the studies.

@MatthewAshworth
@MatthewAshworth 2 жыл бұрын
There have already been 3 separate studies (1 from South Africa, 1 from Imperial College, England, and 1 from Scotland) that show that Omicron is indeed milder than Delta because it causes a big reduction in hospitalisations, hospital stay duration, AND severity of disease whilst in hospital. And this agrees with the pathophysiology of the Omicron compared to Delta and other variants, where it's been found to mainly replicate in the bronchi and a lot less in the alveoli of the lungs, so a lot less likely to produce pneumonia. And of course, the robust T-cell responses from any exposure to the virus (whether natural or vaccinated) protect against severe disease, even if they might not prevent infection altogether (this requires mucosal immunity).

Let's also not forget the fact that the statistics are monstrously skewed in a number of ways. For example, when someone gets hospitalized with something unrelated to covid, they're forced to take a test, which, if positive, gets them included in the "hospitalized covid patients" group, and if they're unfortunate and die from their unrelated illness/injury, they become part of the "covid deaths" statistic. So in the end that 99,97% chance to survive the virus may turn out to be 99,99%. Just something to keep in mind when weighing your options against one another.

Had both Pfizer shots over half a year ago and just tested positive 6 days after getting symptoms. I started to feel a tickle in the throat on a Sunday night. Woke up Monday with a mild sore throat and aches and pains but no fever. This continued through Wednesday. By Thursday symptoms began to subside greatly. Today is Friday and symptoms are very minor. Never lost taste or smell. Never had a problem breathing. Never had fever. A single Advil was all it took to minimize symptoms. I took Zicam every three hours from first onset thinking it was just a cold. As a whole it felt like I had a normal cold that just never got its feet. I only took a test because a friend who also got sick at the same time as me who I carpool with tested positive. I was really surprised I had Covid since it felt like a normal cold that could just never get going.

Throughout the pandemic 80 to 85% of all infected were able to fight off the virus at home. That is one of the confounding factors. Covid-19 often is fought off as a non - severe, flu - like illness. Yet those who developed severe symptoms that required hospitalization got this illness bad enough to require the most aggressive treatment that still was not life - saving in many instances. R1, population density, adherence to preventative measures, test results vs tested population, and others are all factors that confuse what conclusions we can draw from the evidence. Research comes to us in pre- publications that are non-peer-reviewed. Confident as these researchers might be, and well - designed as they may be, they don't have the benefit of confirmation by a panel of medical peers.

At this point it is way too much to ask. The near replacement of Delta with Omicron has changed all that. It will take at least months of well-organized data to get a decent outline of the situation. If we thought the fog of war was bad, the fog of an expanding pandemic is much worse. We saw that with the original outbreak and with the spread of the Delta variant, and neither spread this fast. In the US Omicron has gone from first identification here in the week of December 4 to 58.6% of US cases in one month. In a week or two it will likely be above 95% of cases; Delta acted like that. We will know what is happening after it has happened.

We have no useful data on that and probably won't have for a couple of months. What we have now is entirely spotty, not comprehensive, so all sorts of anomalies pop up. By the end of February we may have some idea what happened. One of the huge confounding factors in that data is that the sample is essentially self-selected. It is likely people who have been vaccinated will seek treatment readily for the same reasons they got vaccinated. Those who have not been vaccinated may try to "ride it out" because of a high expectation of it not being serious. Those factors could easily skew the two cohorts out of all recognizable comparison.

@@timower5850 yes this is what so many people do not understand. @@MiTreasureHunter It is not about fear. It is about thinking rationally and objectively. Look at the data, look at the study, and interpret the data based on context. Like Dr. Hansen said, he refers to the peer-reviewed study at New England Journal when he speaks. Omnicron is more contagious, but milder. The vaccines did drop a little, but still prevent 70% of hospitalization. Omicron is still new though, so there are many that we do not know yet.

I had a cold starting between Dec 13th and 15th. On Dec 21 Covid test was negative, which proves nothing that late from onset. Symptoms had run their course by the 24th. 24 hours ago. Late at night on Jan 4th, I began having unusual congestion symptoms which go beyond my usual asthma symptoms. I have had to use my inhaler and symptoms recur before my usual next dose. This is an identical pattern from when I had SARS-CoV-2 in February - March 2020. I had a 7 day cold, 7 days with no symptoms and two weeks of asthma and fatigue. Now that nasal symptoms are a recognized part of COVID phase 1, it is not unthinkable that breakthrough Omicron might also have 2 phases. I have been vaccinated but not boosted (and it's too late now). We will see if Omicron has two phases with a resting phase in the middle. This variant may not be as easy as advertised.

My vaccinated diabetic type 1 daughter just got over covid, two days in bed, no fever, lost taste and smell and appetite, nausea, but no fever and no cough, just heavy nasal congestion severe body aches. Meanwhile I still haven’t gotten sick. I’m not vaccinated and have no underlying health conditions. I work in a high public traffic area. I have never tested positive either. I am not sure I have antibodies, but I find it very strange that I haven’t gotten sick. Almost everyone vaccinated at work got sick with covid in December.

I'd like to know that as well, but pretty much by definition, that's info we'll have to wait for. Hopefully the fact that the initial symptoms are different and it's not as prevalent in the lungs will also mean that it won't be as likely to cause the same long term effects.

You referenced two vaccinces, Pfizer and J&J, but you only mentioned the results of what percent that the Pfizer vaccince as reported to keep those people out of the hospital which was 70%. But J&J deserves to share the lime-light too. There was wide spread reporting yesterday that in fact, the J&J vaccine with booster had an even better percentage of keeping people out of the hospital which is at 85%! You never mentioned this this at all and I would expect this to be good news for everyone to hear and know about. Plus, reporting said most S. African citizens recieved the J&J vaccine due to it being the most available vaccine (& booster) in that part of the world. I'm just going to say that the missed opportunity to sing J&J's awesome news was just a "one off" and will continue to watch and love your site as always, I truly love it. I just hope you can report what was wide-spread J&J fantastic news yesterday and make it right...here. Keep doing what you're doing...(a very loyal fan here).
