This omni is stunning to behold. It's a real treat to the eye with the new coloring and I think it looks so much better with the digital coloring, to my more modern eye. I've owned for a while now but have yet to go through it issue by issue. I need to change my lighting so I can fully appreciate this beautiful book. Great Panelology

Does Batman omnibus Neal adams include Batman #217? I’ve been wondering and making sure the famous Batman comics are in there. Not just the cover but the whole issue
@earlgrey8623 жыл бұрын
#217 isn't in it
@oscarfairley66008 ай бұрын
Neal only did the cover for Batman #217.

Excellent review. I bought the omnibus when it was released and immediately was bothered by the recoloring. I haven't opened it since. I even thought about selling it, but changed my mind since I'm not going to be buying the original comics. Adams made Batman sexy My favorite Adams drawn Batman is Batman 244. I particularly like the panel where Batman kisses Talia.

great video that speaks to my heart. his newer work suffers (maybe his age or just that decades of time dull the inspiration) but seeing how his work holds up and how delicious it is with a professional ink jet on better paper. yum! interesting observation RE: the recolorists. I am mixed. print tech has changed and to see his base layout flourish with a modern gloss is nice. but the purist in me does cry NO. comparing these to the original prints in my boxes I truly feel the recolor sometimes makes things better and pops off the page but other times it looks awkward.

for me Neal Adams best piece is the cover of batman 251. classic! so well conceived

are there any german exclusive graphic novels that are not yet translated into another language that you consider must-read? I would sincerely try to learn German if it isn't too hard
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
no... actually there's nothing that comes to my mind that would be worth that amount of effort. Long time ago I did a panellogy about my very subjective take on the comicwasteland that is my country (panellogy 010). Of course there are some decent or more than decent books, for an instance "Alpha" and "Beta" by Jens Harder (panellogy 070), but even they are available in English in the meantime (even though these books have so few words in it that it's almost no difference if you get the German instead).

I had read that Neal Adams asked for and oversaw the new coloring on his old Batman stuff. Plus he art corrected some of the stories. I think it was in the Deadman collection that Adams even re-inked most of an issue that George Roussos originally inked. It's usually an editorial decision to recolor something and add airbrush effects to it. That's usually not up to the colorist. He or she is told to do that. I don't remember if I've posted this here before but here is a good article on the recoloring of Conan. comicsalliance.com/whatever-happened-to-barry-windsor-smith-in-the-comics-conversation/
@russworks28827 жыл бұрын
That's a great article; it's so frustrating to have bought those hardcover reprints of Conan and not be able to stomach reading them because the coloring was so slipshod. Another recoloring that grated on me was the collected Tales of Asgard, which some seem to like. Both make this Adams collection seem good by comparison.
@JaredOsborn7 жыл бұрын
I bought those Conan collections too and never did quite read them. At first I thought they wouldn't bother me much but then the coloring always made me wish I had the originals. Turns out I'd rather read the black and white Essential editions.
@LambdaJM7 жыл бұрын
For me the new coloring is fine. It is not overdone and a very carefully treatment of the original (in my opinion) . Very well made book and a good review.
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
on the whole and all in all I agree.. even though there are lots of panels which looked better before in my opinion. And I wouldn't consider it a very careful treatment, at least partwise it's rather a complete new coloring.

Absolutely. I mean, I love what that crazy story looks like. The art is phenomenal, but the guy should stick to drawing. And I mean, really.

Neal has stated a few times he is not a believer in the hollow earth theory, it's just a good subject for fiction writing
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I'm far from believing that Wikipedia is always right, but the following excerpt hints in another direction: "Adams believes the Earth is growing[95] through a process called pair production.[96] Adams holds the work of Australian geologist Samuel Warren Carey in high esteem, but considers the term "Expanding Earth" a misnomer.[97][98] While Carey did advocate an expanding Earth in the mid-20th century, his model was rejected following the development of the theory of plate tectonics.[99][100][101] Adams advocates his ideas in a DVD documentary he wrote and produced, clips of which are available on his KZbin channel.[102][103] Adams appeared on the radio show Coast to Coast AM several times to discuss his claims.[104] He was also interviewed by Steven Novella on a Skeptics Guide podcast in 2006, and afterward continued the debate on Novella's blog.[105] Japan Times columnist Jeff Ogrisseg wrote a three-part feature promoting Adams's ideas,[106][107][108] which was roundly criticized by Novella for being an example of "outright promotion of pseudoscience as if it were news."[109] " at least he elevates that crap onto the level of a "theory" and that's unfortunate enough imo

The older colors look nice. Maybe instead of recoloring the work they should just do some touching up.
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
... what I forgot to mention was, that Neal apparently even redrew some of his panels for the omni (but I haven't figured out which).
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
ah... it was obviously not a redrawing but re-inking (see Jared Osborn's comment down below)
@sleepyreader6667 жыл бұрын
That style of recoloring makes me a bit sad. I have some of this stuff digitally, and the recoloring is a little less heavy feeling in that format, but even there is a disappointment. But Adams batman is so compelling, otherwise, I'd be tempted by this volume....
@sleepyreader6667 жыл бұрын
I haven't read Batman Odyssey but Adam's recent script of Rise of the Superman really was so bad it was almost good--Ed Wood seems to be a major Adams influence as a writer.
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
:) yeah, I think Ed Wood fans would get a kick out of the Odyssey as well (and what a megalomaniac title that is ... yes, he has to be the Homer of comics, nuffin' less lol)

Is your criticism of the scientific inaccuracy of the Manbat comic book story supposed to be a _parody_ of German humorlessness?
@earlgrey8622 жыл бұрын
probably
@tediousmaximus10674 жыл бұрын
I actually like the new digital coloring. It looks great. What I didn't like is Neal re-drawing Batman's face here and there. His new stuff looks awful. And this would be a great book if Batman Odyssey was not in it. That story and the art are the worst thing Neal has ever done!
@earlgrey8624 жыл бұрын
word!

The older coloring tended to be more impressionistic and less literal in newsprint comics. Lots of monochrome figures in the backgrounds. One problem with doing complicated, modeled coloring over Neal Adams' already detailed drawing, which already delineates textures and light sources with ink, is that it creates a lot of unnecessary noise that can tire your eyes out after a while, or at the very least make you a little uncomfortable. Another factor is that newsprint is warmer and more absorbent to the colors, which means even the same coloring can seem more intense on higher-surface paper.
@earlgrey8627 жыл бұрын
"unnecessary noise" ... yeah, that's it, thanks for that excellent comment
