Panhandler Arrested, Stolen Camper Towed Away From WALMART! | Jason Asselin

Don't you dare judge me before watching this entire video.. Wal-Mart in Iron Mountain, Michigan kicked me off their property and said I was not helping them by posting these videos. Listen to his story and read ALL the comments, then compare his story to the truth.
They didn't come from Appleton, Wisconsin on their way to Kalmazoo, MI. They were just in Escanaba, MI days ago (50 miles east of here) and are lost apparently just like all the others. He told me on video he has $50 in his pocket for gas and says he was driving.
He was arrested for THEFT of the camper and the camper with IDAHO plates was towed away. His pregnant wife was taken by police, hopefully to the caring house where she can get help. This is all just nuts! Why is Walmart ALLOWING these people to sit all across the country and SCAM their own customers?
I proposed Walmart starts taking action to stop this from happening at every store around the country, instead I was told to learn Walmart's policy about filming on the property. Then I was asked to leave.

I've been in harsh situations in my life and have had to do the same things because my mom was very sick and started with enough gas money to make it home from Oregon to Connecticut but my van started to have problems over the road and not knowing the areas that I kept getting stuck in and having to buy parts and hotel rooms I exhausted all of my funds and options , my family is very poor and they couldn't help at all so I was stuck having to pan handle and I luckily found a contractor who was short laborers and got a job doing a roof job on an entire apartment complex that I was able to make about 750$ in less than a week and was able to travel a little bit further to Nebraska where I blew my head gasket was stuck at a gas station for 2 days having to replace it and antifreeze / oil everything I needed to continue my journey back home to c.t. I still to this day thank everyone who did stop to help me get home or did whatever it took to get me food ext.. I was honest but you never know what situation a person is in and yeah there are people who take advantage of the kind people who help but not everyone is out there scamming people ..

My husband and I just came back from traveling the country for the past 2years. Walmart is a free & safe place for those who have RV's. We prefer KOA's but they aren't always available. If your only stopping 8hrs to sleep spending $70 at a camp ground that's out of our way is unnecessary when we can stay at Walmart for free and pick up groceries. Walmarts are everywhere along the interstate. Infact Flagstaff Arizona allows homeless to sleep in there cars for any duration of time. The city encourages it to keep there streets safe. With Iron mountain on 2, you have a good amount of travelers passing through. Not everyone is bad! Not everyone panhandling is from some group there to steal the locals hard earned money! If you took a trip across the country you'd see this goes on more than you'd like to think. In weed CA we saw older RV's on nearly every corner, trucks stop, grocery store in the city. They were even next to the welcome to Weed sign begging with their beanies on. They are everywhere, coast to coast!

As a full time RVer in a 33ft Class A motorhome, I travel all over the country sometimes run low on gas. Usually a day or two before payday. I never panhandle or beg for money. Wal Mart is a good place to sit over night until my pay in in my account. Then I move on.If someone filmed me and or my RV at Wal Mart or anywhere While I was out of gas waiting for my pay to refill my gas tank, I'd sue that person for defaming my name and harassment. RUNNING OUT OF GAS IS NOT ILLEGAL.BTW No state in the United States can tow my RV for any reason. A home cannot be towed or impounded. I live in my RV. It is my home. Been my home for the last 26 years.

An RV is cheaper than rent/lights/water in most places. In my neck of the woods, the cheapest rent is about $800 a month. Average electric bill is around a hundred. Water about another fifty to eighty. All told, a grand a month to live a barebones lifestyle. That doesn't even include a vehicle for transportation. Now, you can buy an RV for around three thousand. Insurance is about five-hundred a year, yes a year. They get about 5-10mpg. If you put solar panels on the roof and some batteries inside with some electronics, guess what? You now don't have to pay a monthly electric bill. In a rational world, you could take your "new" RV and park it on some land and live in it hooked to the grid if you so choose. We don't live in a rational world. Where I live, it's illegal to live in an RV or travel trailer for longer than a month. Period. No exceptions. Alright, well maybe you could build a tiny and affordable home on a small piece of land? Nope. Illegal. Minimum size requirements for my area say the smallest you can build is about a thousand square feet. Alright, what about buying a manufactured home (mobile home)? Sure, you can buy one used for really cheap, a few thousand, but you usually have to move it with is usually another few thousand. Then you will still have lot rent/electricity/water/sewer. Lot rent here for manufactured homes is about four-hundred and up a month. All the small pieces of cheap land are not zoned to allow manufactured homes and the zoning departments will not approve a change. So your choices are pretty much rent something expensive, live under a bridge, or live in an RV in parking lots and out of the way areas always running from the police (who will do everything they can to make you move along or they will arrest you and impound your RV). If you go the RV route, you are stigmatized. Automatically assumed you are a piece of trash addicted to drugs or on the run from the police. Nobody wants you around, you are seen as homeless, despite an RV being a huge upgrade to under a bridge. The middle-class doesn't want to even think about the homeless. The upper-class doesn't think about them. The lower-class thinks about them but tries not to since they are usually a month away from being under a bridge if they aren't careful. I know what it's like to not have a home to live in, and I know what it's like to have a reasonably comfortable life. I know how hard it can be to simply go day to day without giving up. I also know of all those who turn to scamming. It's easy to make a living scamming people, but you have to be soulless to do it. Not everyone who is homeless are drug addicts or scammers. Not everyone living in an RV are homeless or drug addicts or scammers.

I'm surprised either Walmart or the local police don't ask these people to leave? Spending the night at a Walmart is "benefit" not a "right". They can ask ANYONE to leave for any reason. And I'm surprised the local city government doesn't have a prohibition on such activity. As is the case in many cities with Walmarts, the local officials can pass an ordinance the prohibits ANY overnight stays at their local Walmart. I understand your points but I do not agree that Walmart should charge overnight Parkers any amount of money. For those who are forced to live in their vehicles the last thing they should have to worry about after working all day is coming up with 5 dollars just to be able to go to sleep. Even worse for those who aren’t currently working but still living in their vehicle. One can take information if that’s what you want, without taking money. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to have to live in your vehicle -RV a bit easier but still no picnic. There really IS no place like home. Some states provide lifeline cell service to people on public assistance (medicaid, food stamps, etc.) which is free (obviously) and comes with a limited number of minutes and limited data each month. If you have access to wifi, (there are public places that have free wifi) you can use the phone for calls or the internet. And that's probably how she was able to comment on this video.

I for one can tell you that I know someone who is homeless because of mental illness and another who does not get enough social security to pay rent. Having a phone for safety and communication is very important to them. That $50 phone bill will NOT get them a place to live for a month, but it will give them a sense of security. I haven't had anything but pasta and butter to feed my family for days until my husband gets paid again and I still don't have the nerve to panhandle. It's not up to others to care for my family it's mine so we struggle and the food might be the same for a few days but we are eating, we have clothes, and a roof over our head by our own hands. Although I have given to panhandlers plenty of times because you never really know how hard they are having things go in their lives. I'm not in the best of shape and I know others are worse off than me so I help when I can and God provides for me when I need it.

Let me tell you tho. If things get tight like that again go find out where to get the listing for food pantries in your area. You can get Rice and beans, cereal milk juice, fresh veggies and even fresh bread and goodies, you can luck up and get different types of meat or deli too . Sometimes you cant be too proud to get help when you have kids. When i was in the same boat ,i got a booklet from one food pantry that tells you where all the others are located. I,and a group of others made the rounds as each place has different items.I was able to feed my family for a whole week easy,and whatever was left i kept in the pantry just in case.

One time my mother was taken to a hospital 3 hours from home and I was 18 taking care of her. We are from a rural Appalachia area and jobs was so scarce after coal left and I had no car. I was stuck in a hospital with no money and they won't feed a guest unless u have been there for 3 days. I had no idea we was going to be gone 2 weeks and I had to go out and ask for dollars hoping someone wasn't like urself thinking it's a scam. Now that I have money and a house I remember that and I still take care of my mom. When I see someone panhandling I sometime think maybe it's a scam but I remember when I had to do that and I'd prefer one or 2 scam someone so a few gets helped. Karma will sort them out. Jason, we have a national epidemic of Decrepit Junk RVs that are uninsured, unregistered and unroadworthy plaguing our streets, dumping trash and human waste, parked in parking lots. (messing it up for people who really need to use these Walmart parking lots while on road trips,etc. many Walmart’s are now banning overnight camping in their parking lots.) I honestly believe that if someone can’t at least pay their annual vehicle registration, their vehicle ought to be impounded(if you don’t have to pay rent/utilities, you have all year to save for your registration) Many of these “oversized vehicles” get either a free pass or get ticket after ticket but rarely towed mainly due to the high cost of disposal of these vehicles. It actually costs towing companies more to junk these campers than they get for towing them. Many of these vehicles are full of trash and create blight anywhere they go. We need solutions to this problem.

Wal-Mart is doing a great service to their customers and communities and the world by offering weary travelers a place to park, rest and sleep. Many travelers can not afford to blow $100 plus on a hotel/motel to catch a few hours of sleep. Without Wal-Mart offering their parking lots to weary travelers, who knows how many more accidents and deaths there'd be out on the highways with so many more folks driving who are too tired and exhausted to be driving?? Dude, not charge 100-200$ that is waaay to much. That is more than a permit in Myrtle Beach, SC. And, people do not usually even make that much at all as it is.. I know from experience that it is more than Myrtle Beach, SC. Because, one summer I went down to Myrtle Beach and got one myself so I could work for a few days but I didn't just panhandle. I made balloons, for "tips". It for the most part was horrible and costed me more than what I made. (For the most part, but there were some generous people.) Usually a balloon that only takes one balloon to make would cost $1, $2 if it took two balloons to make, and so on it depends on how intricate in a how hard it takes to make. But, in Myrtle Beach you are not allowed to set your prices. So, it is on "tips" and some people would get $5 harder more expensive balloons and they would give me $1 total. I thankfully, had some very nice people ask me the price and I told them "I work on tips, not allowed to set a price, it is against the law to set price" and a couple dropped 5$ and one dropped a 10$. I was truly greatful. I am disabled, Autism Spectrum. I met a nice mother with two sons one day while I was making balloons and we were talking as I worked and she said they were also on the Autism Spectrum and I had given her "hope" for her boys. That made me feel so good that I could give her hope for her two sons. :)
