Why do you need to "verify" what in his gas tank if you're unwilling to help? I don't give money to everybody, but there was an incident a man at a gas station told me he didn't have enough gas to get home and could I help. I could see the gas gauge in his car and it was on empty. I honestly believe the man was telling me the truth so I helped. I don't regret that one.

The guy who does this video taping ( Jason) has no job and he lives off his wife! To me that’s worse than being a panhandler! He’s a wanna be investigator that doesn’t like to work but wants to put other people down and bully them to make his little self look big. It’s like calling the kettle black! Mindy, I know our state is quite a bit different than the rest, but bad people can look look good people sometimes. I have lived all over the US, but I always come back to Tennessee. Everyone waves going down the road and we will help anyone. We love our neighbors and just a friendlier bunch than the rest. We do have our bad and very bad though and I have seen all kinds. I have run across those that almost made me lose faith in humanity, but they are the extreme minority and I try and remember that. I have known people that look just like this guy that think stealing is perfectly fine and there is nothing wrong with it. It is almost like a mental illness. They think they aren't physically harming someone so no big deal. While at the same time if someone took something from them, they would be upset. Combine this with narcissistic personality and you have some bad people. Unfortunately have run across these and one even worse. The best thing to do is stay away, but it is important for people to know who these people are, because they can do a lot of damage.

I have given 2 panhandlers a home one no money except panhandling. He got food stamps after 6 months he finally bought me a ham. I don't eat ham so it wasn't for me. The next one is still with me I have only caught him panhandling once for the money he owed me already from filling his taxes. Then he was mad because he misunderstood what I used the money for from my son. Excuse me it was my money to begin with. Panhandlers are their because they don't want to pay for what they have, they want you to pay for them.

I'm getting tired of it myself; there are a few videos on YT about the "gas station hustle" where people park by the pumps and say their out of gas and make $40-50 an hour! I put $5 of gas in some girl's car last week because that's what she asked for. About a month ago some girl asked for $5 in gas so I put it on my debit card along with my purchase. I wondered why it took her so long to put $5 in her truck but I just drove off anyway. A few nights later the clerk told me she didn't put any gas in her truck and demanded the $5 refund, I paid for, so he gave it to her! Now I know $5 will get someone a bump of meth or a hit of crack. The neighbors asked me for $5 for gas a few days ago so I gave them $3.13 in change and told em I was broke. That's enough for a tad over a gallon of gas for your little old Honda. I never see any of them working but I know at one is on disability like me. They didn't leave for hours and I think I know why; they didn't really need gas. They needed $5 for beer or dope and $3.13 wasn't enough! I'm tired of it; tired, tired, tired! Go get a job or fly a cardboard sign and stop asking me! The "something for nothing" mentality these folks have rubs me the wrong way. That guy was well dressed for a panhandler; that was the 1st thing I noticed!

What is sad , in 83 I feel off of a roof and busted up my back . So worked for 27 years most it on my feet , after falling . Then in 2011 I reinjured it , and it put me out of work . Having a house note , a 8 year old , bills out the yang , yang and only a 8th grade education , I did not know what to do . So put in for my disability and while waiting to see if I was going to get it , we almost lost every thing . Me and the wife had to do the Walmart Pan handling thing . It was not at all fun or good for my pride . I did have people , asking the same as you do . It is a sad when people do that and ruin it , for the ones that are in need of the help . I am happy to say , by God grace we did make it though that and we r doing good . Thanks for doing what you r doing .God Bless .

I got burned once by a young mother running from an abusive husband, she was sitting at a gas pump next to mine with a kid in the car & it was loaded full of stuff like she just took off from her house. She gave me the sad eyes & tears about not having money & trying to get to Maine. I gave her 20 & thought I had done something right & told a couple co workers about her and one of them described her & the car perfectly & said she was at a gas station a couple days before near where he lived. Offered to help a gent recently at a gas station when I was filing up my truck who claimed he needed gas. I am homeless with my children in a vehicle similar to his and I have panhandled for assistance with gas, food, hotels in the winter, etc... People stalking panhandlers does not prove fraudulent activity. I also dress nice because I have nice clothes because I had them before becoming homeless and a frequently wash my laundry at the laundromat to keep clean. Walmart attracts people because The store has a good flow of customers where people can get help, if you need help you go where people are, similar to non profits they also use Walmart as a means to collect donations. The local news here in Pittsburgh did an interview with a local panhandler that was bumming every day for years at the end of the same bridge where traffic bottlenecks into a tunnel. People looked forward to doing their good deed for the day on their way home by throwing a buck or two into his bucket. He told the news that he puts on dirty clothes and uses the same cardboard sign because it evokes sympathy and that he was making over $100 per day in just two or three hours during rush hour(s), but it pissed off his main daily supporters because they now found out he was making more money than them working hard for a full eight hours. His scam was exposed, people started yelling "get a real job" instead of contributing to his scam. He soon vanished from the bridge and wished he never spoke to the news people. Keep up the good work, people like this ruin the sympathy people have for the real hungry and homeless, making it much harder for people that actually do need help.

I think this guy is legit. I agree that most of them make a living out of this but this guy seems okay and could be in a real quandary. I like what Columbia, Missourihas implemented. They have a bus that goes out and offers them a ride and shelter, food and help finding a job. They run commercials asking people to call and report panhandlers so they can go out and talk to them rather then giving them a handout. One day I bought a panhandler McD’s and he just left it on the curb. Apparently he wanted money for booze so never again.
