LYRICS
In 1998, you bought a BC Rich
You were a master shredder from the jump
Blew them all away with the Ritalin kids
While I was shedding through my sophomore slump
You had so many chances to become a star
But you never really cared about that
Local god
You’ll live forever as a local god
It’s even better than the thing you’re not
Local god
Local god
You’ll live forever as a local god
You’ll be remembered for the thing you’re not
Local god
We signed a record deal at seventeen
Hated by every local band
They said we never paid our dues, but what does that mean
When money never changes hands
It’s 2021 and I’m almost famous
You never really cared about that
Local god
You’ll live forever as a local god
It’s even better than the thing you’re not
Local god
Local god
You’ll live forever as a local god
You’ll be remembered for the thing you’re not
Local god
Are you melting face at the Bellagio
Whoa oh oh
Or are you teaching little kids how to rock ’n’ roll
Whoa oh oh
Did you get weighed-down by your heart of gold
‘Cos you really only cared about that
Wonder if you had a chance to sell your soul
Did you ever get your money back?
Did you ever kiss the devil?
Local god
You’ll live forever as a local god
It’s even better than the thing you’re not
Local god
Local god
You’ll live forever as a local god
You’ll be remembered for the thing you’re not
Local god

Okay so I gotta admit something: I love the SOUND of all of these songs, but the lyrics just aren't hitting. The sound is nostalgic and sounds like V&V era as I've said before, but the lyrics feel artificial and too... I don't know, it's hard to describe. It just feels so obsessed with fame that it comes across as conceited, if that makes sense? I'm getting a tad worried here that Brendon is just trying to recreate something that's not meant to be recreated just to have another radio hit, and that's not what music should be about. Sticking it out for the rest of the album, we'll see if my mind changes any.
@en_lightenment
@en_lightenment Жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I thought. I must agree these sounds are very alike to those old ones, but how it's so unnatural makes it odd. Kinda sounds like Brendon tried to pushed and squeezed himself out just to write the song, but did not feel like it anyway. I'm not giving off hate though, just concerned that I might lose one of my favorite bands.

@@hallheyx3x350 I don't understand what you're talking about because almost every Panic! song since Brendon was the only member left had been mostly written by Brendon. Obviously if he asked someone for help with even a single lyric that person gets writing creds for lyrics. Brendon even said in Viva Las Vengeance "Someone did me wrong, stole my favorite song" which (to me) is a look back to when Spencer tried claiming he wrote more of This Is Gospel than Brendon, when Brendon wrote about 90% of that song lyrically. In terms of the instrumentals, melodies, etc, of course Brendon isn't 100% responsible, that of course is the band, hence having a band. I'm not sure what you mean by he doesn't write his own music. The only thing that I’m noticing so far with this album that’s really bumming me out is the audio quality. I’m not sure if anyone else is paying attention to the levels of the instrumentals drowning out the artist’s capabilities-but that’s where my head space is. Brendon’s voice shouldn’t be drowned out by instrumentals-it should be a mix where one doesn’t overpower the other.

Ok so I need you to imagine he sang this in the same register and intensity as Trade Mistakes/any Vices song, or even Dying In LA, and tell me that this wouldn't be one hell of an amazing song. The instrumentation is there. The production is there. The lyrics are there. The vocal delivery is not, and is the same excuse to needlessly belt falsettos that every song in this album seems like its going to have. Its far too evident from past tour performances where he would find any opportunity to do needless vocal cord shredding, that he is writing these songs around being able to do that 24/7. No longer having to force high register ad libs because they are literally entire songs now.
@juliajeffries2994
@juliajeffries2994 Жыл бұрын
This is exactly my thoughts. The potential for the song is there for me, I just don't understand why he's maxing out his range on every single track. I feel like the way he sang for majority of his career was so much more enjoyable. And probably more sustainable, I don't know how he's gonna do this on tour night after night with an album like this.
@marshm3llow467
@marshm3llow467 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! The music itself isn't terrible, but the vocal performance instantly grates on me. You're right that now he can belt like this he feels the need to show off and do it all the time, when before he trained his voice so much in his earlier albums the vocals were lovely. Really disappointing.

Not trying to mischaracterize your point or say your opinion is invalid, but here's the feeling it gives me: Wow, I never thought it was possible to be criticized for being TOO good. That's pretty much all I have to say. But if you want to read more about my thoughts, then read on. I mean, the guy is a great singer. He can sing high or low or in between and has a beautiful timbre to his voice which has remained strong and healthy since 2005, which is really saying something for someone who must sing as much as he does. It's like you finally achieve the thing you've always wanted to do... Sing incredibly high for a guy, and now instead of people being like "yes, you did it!" people are like "okay, you don't have to do it all the time. Now I'm annoyed". Doesn't matter that his intonation and vocal quality is practically perfect, here. Just matters that he's singing high a lot and for some reason, you don't like that. I get it, music is opinions, but you know, sometimes it just hurts to hear a guy get slagged for being essentially too good at what he wants to do. All love and respect, just think if the guy wants to sing high and has a GREAT voice to do so, then give him a break, let him sing high. It's like telling Da Vinci not every painting has to be so ornate, or telling Picasso not every painting has to be so abstract; it's just like missing the whole point of them doing what they are good at and/or have practiced so long and hard to be good at. It's disrespecting the whole achievement in my opinion and instead stripping it all back to your opinion and for some reason demeaning someone for being TOO good at their art - Anyway, that's my take, doesn't have to be yours, but I say if the guy has got a great voice, let him use it in peace. No need to be annoyed with someone using their great voice. Just enjoy the music. Don't you wish you could sing like that? :) I know I sure do. All the best.

@@emotionalrelation997 I feel the need to touch on all of the instances where you said something in the ballpark of "being criticized for being too good". I genuinely wish he was. I for one, personally, would prefer Brendon to be doing his thing for the next many decades. And I still hold on to the hope that the last half of this album will blow me away, having grown up listening to every album the moment it was released. However, the reality of the situation is that if he keeps up what he is doing now, he won't have a voice by the end of this current one. He does not have the control of his voice required to do this safely, he is straining constantly. He could get away with what he is currently doing with decent breaks, maybe, but he will eventually tour this album and he won't get that chance. Past tours also are indicative that he simply does not care. This "voice which has remained strong and healthy since 2005" is currently being put through a woodchipper and only remained that strong because he wasn't doing this until 5 years back. I truly believe with some coaching he would have zero issues, the guy is talented, but if the last 9 or so years have shown us anything its that Brandon has a pretty strong pride streak in him, which makes me doubtful that it is even remotely in the cards. As for the rest of your reply, in short, yes, my preference is for an album to have literally any variance between tracks and vocal performance. It is not interesting to listen to the same thing rehashed for 10 tracks. This band had its roots in the genre that was supposed to be the antithesis of mass produced same-y sounding music, yet here we are. And yes I also prefer pre-existing music to not be butchered for self gratification at the expense of the song.

I don't understand why Brendon Urie is making this verses that don't match with chorus thing. I mean, they're like pieces in different keys. The transition doesn't sound natural. It's kinda abrupt, I don't know. I feel that vibe in Viva las vengeance and middle of a breakup as well. It's just weird. Still love Urie and p!atd a lot, tho lol

The past couple albums he's started to get pretty experimental with his music. I didn't like many of the songs on pray for the wicked at first but now I adore them because they feel so unique and interseting. I think a couple of listens makes these songs work - though I'm still not fussed about middle of a breakup. With this one the sudden key change seperates the reminiscing about the past that happens in the verses to the chorus which sings about the future - there's a huge time jump so the key change is sudden and surprising. The chorus is also so bright and joyful because whoever he's singing about has made it, they're a hero in the eyes of the people that matter, and they've not sold their soul to the devil to get there. That's better than fame and fortune. I think this song is quite bittersweet. He's saying 'here's all the things you did that stopped you from being famous.' Key change, trying to cheer himself up. 'But that's good, I'm not dissing you, in the end you won, you became a local god.' It's word painting through the chord progression which is rather clever, I think. It shouldn't work, but it does, imo.

I feel like he’s a bit lost. I haven’t really liked any of the singles that he’s released so far. They sound off like something’s missing. I don’t know if it’s background vocals or if the production is off. I have no idea what it is, they just sound incomplete to me. He needs to get back to his DOAB/V&V sound. This one is tolerable. I couldn’t stand the last two. This new stuff isn’t doing it for me or his career though. I’m sad for him. I think he either needs a better team or he needs to work with better people 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@kchattx I mean, Panic! has never really been the band to repeat a sound. It's more 60s and 70s powerpop/rock inspired, which isn't for everyone, so I'm not surprised it's not as popular as their more pop records. And if this album doesn't work out, well he'll change the genre up entirely next time.

Well the thing about it is Ryan and Jon wanted tyv to go big but because it didn’t they felt content in their musical career with a group label on it and both went solo, Ryan started ghostwriting for people and producing and jon went on to release his own music and make it good, honestly I think Brendon was upset because he never allowed himself to be his own person, he made himself be panic at the disco, zero individuality and constantly searching for the pre-split charm and all life was broadcasted mainstream while Ryan and Jon kept a steady income and didn’t have their lives swallowed whole by hollywood
