To understand the use of an edged weapon a good place to start is with a martial artist that also designs knives. James Williams is the President of Bugei Trading Company, Inc. He has been studying martial arts since 1960 and teaching since 1975. James has trained, competed in, and taught a number of different martial disciplines. James also teaches Close Quarters Combat to police and military both foreign and domestic. His knife designs are produced by Columbia River Knife and Tool. In this video James discusses and reviews what knives do, classical martial arts, strategy, the responsible use of an edged weapon, geometry of force, movement, fooling the eye, the human survival mechanism, gripping and manipulation, strategy, and more.

This is correct in a way. Classically based military arts were designed for war; war is about deception. What is happening here are very subtle and precise solutions for an engagement. Krav Maga like many other "martial arts" lacks the effeciency and deception that classical arts were based around. Krav Maga is a study of techniques; classical arts are a study of principles. Techniques always change while principles remain constant. The study of classical arts is involved but the reared is high.

It looks promising, but Aikijutsu and Systema techniques like ones James trains in take a quite awhile to learn and require a teacher to understand some of their unusual techniques and body mechanics.

It looks like A LOT of risky moves that will take a life time to train properly. Obviously any engagement with a knife is risky, but these techniques seem to require split second timing and fine motor skills. Instead of something like Krav Maga which is more broad strokes and risk mitigation.
