Interesting fact. Dimebag wrote that outro riff for his girlfriend when she was having trouble sleeping and she would listen to it on repeat to fall asleep. Years later he put it in this song.

Pantera was so innovative with their groove and riffs in a metal structure - they have inspired countless bands in one way or another. Every single member was key to the success. They were exactly what was needed at a time when metal was too fractured - some bands sold out for fans, some went underground, and then Pantera came along and made it all about the music first, fans second, foresake everything else. RIP Abbott brothers - Icons taken too early. 🙏

I quit my job to go see Pantera live in 2001. It was their last tour and I don’t regret for one second quitting that job to see this iconic band 😊 This version is new to me, it definitely has an extended outro which is dope as fuck. The backdrop of this song and entire record "The Great Southern Trendkill" (1996) The band cut the music in Texas and singer Phil Anselmo cut all his vocals in NOLA during production. Phil turned to heroin and other hard drugs during this time in his life. As a matter of fact towards the beginning of Tour in 96 Phil died medically for about 5 minutes then was brought back to life. They played a concert the very next night. I can hear many subliminal references to this within the undertones of the song. I've been following Pantera since 1994 when I was just a kid which is why the music carries so much meaning personally. Just for kicks I'm gonna attach an interview with Anselmo the vocalist/lyricist if you or anyone else want to better understand him and the music as it evolved through the years. Took place a Loyola University. It's very hard hitting to put it lightly. In closing I'll say I appreciate younger fans getting into bands that saw me through almost my entire life. In all sincerity good review it was a different interpretation than what I've heard before. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5ykmal9nKyHnZo

It’s about the evil of mankind and basically, how the world existed before us and how it’ll be a better place when we’re gone. The song is structured like a novel; the intro is melancholy…then the flood happens and it’s heavy. The song uses the rain sound effects at the end to illustrate the calm after the death of man. The pounding of the toms 1 2 3 4 during the second heavy guitar bridge is to illustrate the people drowning and “pounding on the Arc” as they’re drowning from The Book of Genesis during the story of Noah.

The righteous cleansing of humanity's filth from the corrupted earth. The mortal deluge rinsing the exhausted world of the iniquitous and the purified and the forgiven alike, leaving none to witness, leaving none to fall and fail, yet again. Ending the experiment of sentience, for all choice leads to damnation. None are worthy. Love cannot survive free will. Hate destroys everything. Indifference conquers all, in the end. And this song was before 2004. After what happened to Dimebag, how can you _not_ feel this way? So, yeah. Sometimes, I _want_ to root for the asteroid, but as long as there are cats and dogs, I don't think I can. Not really. I hate us all. I love us all. And I despair.
