It was the first thing I heard upon waking and it was a ridiculously memorable thing.

Man that ending gives me fucking chills and i have heard the song about 500 times. God damn that is a cool as riff. Melancholic, Beautiful, Awe inspiring, Lonely, Peaceful, Finality of a chapter ending, etc. I believe it was called Rita's Lullaby originalyl, and Dime recorded a multiple hour loop on cassette of him playing it so his gf Rita could drift off to sleep when he wasnt around, and she could feel like he's still there. FUCK that is beautiufl

Yeah he's not saying die. He is saying Flood and they are using like a decaying delay effect. You can only hear the F sound the first time he say the word in the phrase. Then it delays with the first syllable cut off and so you then hear the "lood" part during first repeat and so on. and the last repeat before the phrase starts over it's pretty much just the "duh" sound. If any of that makes sense.

i’m 22 years old and recently giving this album a FULL listen was mind blowing. right after Far Beyond Driven debuts at #1, they decide to drop this BEAST that is a way heavier and darker direction. I’ve heard many things about this album but the fact that Phil (lead singer) stayed in New Orleans to record vocals because he was struggling with addiction and Dimebag had to go back and forth from Texas to piece the album together…there’s a different feel to this album, the dark and heavy things we all go through are almost FELT in these songs. especially in this one and 10’s, the guitar almost sounds like it’s crying with you

Don't know if anyone has pointed this out, but not only was Phil heavily addicted to heroin at this point, but dime, Vinnie and rex recorded this record in Texas and they had to send the tracks to Phil in new Orleans where he recorded his vocals with Trent reznor in Trent's studio. They then had to send the vocals back to Texas, so the overall communication between both parties was very minimal. So I'm sure if the band didn't like alot of Phil's efforts, there wasn't much that could be done. But still my favorite record by them.

I have a theory that the reason the singer sounds like that a lot is the guitarist’s choice to tune down 25 cents from C# standard. So he almost always sounds slightly off because I’m guessing it’s hard to match that when you’re used to singing to A=440hz. So then he’s attempting to match it but it’s not quite perfect. I’m not positive since I don’t experience that problem since I have perfect relative pitch (not full perfect pitch). It’s hard to put myself in normal singer’s shoes though since whatever’s playing I just can match perfectly. When other vocalists told me that’s not how it worked I was really confused. I used to get really damn frustrated at my vocalists as a guitarist when they wouldn’t instantly hit perfectly on the note without practice & they’d be like “it’s not just automatic where you just snap to it” & I didn’t believe them. So I’m thinking it’s maybe a disconnect? Could be wrong & he’s just flat like how Anthony Kedis consistently sings 10 cents underneath the note & must hear music that way or something.

He needs to hear Cemetery Gates to really appreciate Phil's vocal talent.

One of, if not my absolute favorite Pantera song, and I really listen to it for the solo and outro. I can't even be bothered to argue with the contention that it's the 15th best guitar solo of all time. Seems about right to me, and it's almost entirely due to the phrasing. The structure, and symmetry it has are very satisfying.

13:40 yes that's the feeling, Phil (singer) was almost at his lowest on life, fully deyg addict and probably depresses/full of hate. Listening to this album while knowing that fact is a trip

My interpretation of the song was always about mental Illness and the flooding of negative emotions making you want to die but the line extinguishing my soul tells me that that’s wat they meant by dying life drains the child inside everyone leaving a cold sad life

Dime actually wrote the solo and outro as a teen but never used it until ‘96. Phil’s cleans were off key by now because he was heavy into drugs, they were already having problems as a band and he wasn’t even in the same state for the writing/recording. He did the vocal tracks elsewhere and just sent them to the rest of the band. They didn’t make another album for 4 years, toured for it and then broke up. But that’s why the screams on this album are the shit imho. You can hear that dude was in pain and, when I first heard it in 9th grade, I could totally relate. It’s my all time favorite record from any band.

I think there's an old VHS video of Dime playing the Floods outro on stage when he was like 16 or 17. Its on KZbin. He had that particular outro in his pocket for a long, long time. Its so beautiful.
