After researching air compressors and owning several for welding and sandblasting. Here's the downlow. I call it the rule of 5. SCFM is a measure of how much air the compressor pulls from the atmosphere. To know how much air flow is going to your tool, devide by 5. Based on that, you quickly see that each true CFM being delivered to your tool costs $500. You need to run a 3cfm tool. Expect to pay $1500 for the compressor that claims to have 14-16 scfm. Most everything else ( PSI, horsepower, duty cycle, oil less, tank size ect. ) Only affects longevity of the compressor.

I may have missed it in the video, but a very important detail is the duty cycle of this unit. Rigid recommends 5 minutes of run time followed by 5 minutes off for a 50% duty cycle. It can obviously run much longer, but it will shorten the life if you ignore the duty cycle. I have a Tornador at home and this seems like an excellent unit to buy for my occasional use, as well as tire pressures, air gun, or in general compressed air through a nozzle to clean something out, but for the professionals they should keep duty cycle in mind. I'm guessing they have their Tornadors running for much more than 5 minutes at a time without giving the compressor a break.

I have cooked all the other harbor freight pancake compressors in my van but got the most life out of the craftsman but the price jumped from $99 to $160 so I purchased the 6 gallon rigid pancake and honestly cooked it in a week or two in the back of my van. Preformed proper break in on all the units and release pressure. Going to try this unit buying tonight. Hope this one holds up.

This is an excellent point. This is one reason why I had to upgrade. Sadly I bought a quiet 20 gallon compressor with low PSI and SCFM rating. I will be buying a different one again because once you get addicted to the tornador, 5 mins of continuous use is not enough lol

For the exterior, a handheld dryer is a better option. Using the air compressor is more for the interior, where you'd combine it with tools from Tornador. See my video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4HNd4OalqZ4oJI

Question: If I have a washed and dried black car in garage and a few days later I want to drive it but it has a thin layer of dust on paint. Would this be a better tool than a leaf blower to lift dust off car before wiping with quick detail/polish wipe?
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 2 жыл бұрын
Using a leaf blower on dry dust won't do much. The best way is to wash the car. If you don't want to spend the time washing it, just spray the vehicle with a rinseless wash and then gently wipe with a microfiber drying towel.

Been thinking about getting a small air compressor like this…can you use these to blow out excess water around headlights, taillights, mirrors, door handles etc…so it doesn’t drip afterwards vs buying one of these for normal uses and buying one of the blowers for drying cars? I would imagine it’s all the same right it’s just air so I don’t see the reason for both…
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 2 жыл бұрын
Yes this has enough power to do everything you need for detailing. If you get an air blow out tool, you can use it to blow air out of intricate areas, door jams, sills, mirrors, trim, headlights, door handles, grilles, etc. But it's a more "focused" stream of air, so not really used for drying the entire vehicle, although technically you could. Car dryers (or leaf blowers) blow out a wider stream of air so they are more useful if you want to dry the entire vehicle. It will be quicker with a big blower like EGO leaf blower, or MetroVac Master Blaster blower for example.

@@PanTheOrganizer thanks Pan! I mainly just want to be able to blow out the excess that gets trapped in places like door handles and stuff so it doesn’t drip down later! I have some really good drying towels for now like the mammoth from the rag company that work really well for me. Great video Pan, I bought the rigid last week and finally tried it out with a tornador this weekend. However I’m not sure if I’m using properly. When I regulate and lock in the output gauge and it refills it changes to a different number either higher or lower than what I set it to. Is this normal? Anyone that can help? I’m not sure if it’s user error as this is my first experience with a compressor and tornador gun.

I followed the instructions on the manual.When I used it on the weekend, I let the tank fill up. I set the output regulator to 90 PSI and locked it in place, then began using the tornador. The compressor would then refill as normal, but once refilled, the output PSI went up to 100, or another time was at 75. @@PanTheOrganizer
